I accept the serial makers have the motive to do so.They portray it very well in the initial episodes. But then, they go back to the mundane stuff. There's a terribly large difference between what they intend to show and what they show.
It is high time they realise that the pretentious, modern daughter-in-law winning the saas-bahu argument is NOT women empowerment.A woman has a more important role to play in her home than quarrelling with every family member and proving herself correct. Before being someone's daughter, wife, sister or daughter-in-law,she is an individual. This is what most of the serials have conveniently forgotten.
On the other side,we have our very traditional, abiding and ideal 'bahu"s. They face all the taunts and insults, keeping their mouths shut.Any attempt to protect her self-respect is treated as an insult to the adulated in-laws.It is true that we should respect our elders-but no woman needs to sit silent and face harsh mistreatment. That isn't respect but that's impotency.
We have the male protagonist, who is practically dumb in half of the serials. His role is just to watch his "inspiring" wife and mother pique over literally everything. So,when a woman becomes strong, her husband talks once in a week?
There are many things that need to change. We find the serial actress wearing ponderous jewellery everyday.Tell me,who wears two gold necklaces and heavy earrings at home? The more jewellery she wears, the richer her family is.Great!
I'm glad there are a few serials making an effort to show something worthwhile.I appreciate them.Things are changing, for sure. But what I feel is-We need more change.Serials should be entertaining and informative too. They should focus more on current issues and stop beating around the bush. If so, they can undoubtedly empower each and every every woman.
