I think the fault lies in the budget/story more than anything else.I get that it was a seven year old dream and obviously when you get a big budget, you will try to create a huge canvas for your film but I think at the same time directors need to adjust a bit with regarding to their vision in order to cater to the larger audience.I don't think it's nice to make a niche film that doesn't cater to the larger audience with the kind of budget Rangoon has.Such sort of a thing works in independent films but when so much of money is at stake, I feel the director should become less self indulgent and think broader. Raju Hirani does it brilliantly with striking the right balance between creativity and commerce.
This movie lacked everything. I mean even if we leave out the story and performances, it was marketed as a broadway. Who makes a broadway style musical with THAT kind of songs? I don't think I've ever been so disappointed with Vishal as much as after watching Rangoon.Nothing works for the film. And this coming from a die hard admirer of Vishal Bharadwaj's work :(
