I think pushing a child to do something they have no aptitude for is unfair, especially when it is to appease either oneself or the society.. as a kid, every single one of us has had our parents push us in different directions to know and judge, if nothing else, where our talents lie.. yes, he was strict, yes, he pushed his daughters to do something because he had a dream..but he had let go of the dream too; the whole saga started because he saw their potential.. and kids being kids wud definitely prefer lazing rather than undergo a regimen of training..that was hardly surprising..the girls themselves found their passion in the training later..if they hadn't, I like to think he wud have let go after the year long duration like he discussed with his wife..
Personal experiences as a kid were the same for my husband and me..my husband was made to practice for hours on Tabla and learn Karate as a child..my FIL did not let any of his kids watch tv or movies.. and all of them have grown up to not only let go of the resentment but appreciate it..so much so that my husband plans to keep a similar regimen in whichever direction out kid has a talent..coz the only way to hone a passion is to have knowledge.. I was made to study both Maths and Biology for my 12th Boards, though I hated Maths and wanted to take up Medicine (which i did) but I also cleared the Joint for Tech courses, without as much as looking at the books before the exams..because I had a potential which my parents saw..but not once did they force me to let go of my passion because of what they wanted..both concepts of 3I and Dangal make sense in today's world..its about giving freedom to choose and being parents, be strict when your child needs it..

I did feel bad when they were forced in to it but then which kid is serious in life at young age? In childhood everybody wants to just play all the time not study or take up something passionate since most do not know what is their passion.

Most parents put kids in all sorts of classes drawing, karate, swimming, cricket and over time they get to know which the kids love and may be specialize them in that.

Mahavir Ji's methods were not right but even if the girls realized their love for wrestling much later in life(hereditary😉) it would be difficult for them to become perfect in it that is the reason he had to inculcate it in them since childhood.

But yes agree with the big picture that no parents should force any kid since if they fail in it they fail for life and only a few lucky ones do get successful like Geeta, Babita.

I fail to see the issue here...
One needs to understand that we are talking about Haryana here...
Who is is to say that if Mahavir hadn't engineered the girls' foray into the sport, they wouldn't have been married off before adulthood? Child marriage is a huge issue in the state..Heck they were all involved in carrying out household chores
Remember one of their friends even confessed that they were better off wrestling instead of being married off so early in life like she was!

Also if Mahavir wanted his son to put through the ringer & ends up treating his daughters in the same way does ( in a warped way ) inicate he was all for women empowerment...

I say this to my wife as well ...
Some Indian women are akin to Lord Hanuman...
Extremely talented but need to be reminded of their talent (coz the world is too busy trying to make them forget it)...Just like Hanuman had to be reminded that he was all powerful & could fly!!!

^ Anu - I faced similar Maths+ Bio situation but my parents let me choose and I let go Maths. I regret that decision till now.

DKT - What a UN!! Agree with each word . Phogat empowered his girls and that wedding scene proved it.

Piku - Most parents know what works for their children. Some need iron hand and some soft hands - different strokes for different folks . We must know there is no better wellwisher than our parents.
Only a few go all psycho to fulfill their unfulfilled dreams via kids. These are exceptions.
