It's indeed disappointing to think that in order for women to feel modern, empowered and able to stand tall without a man's support, we have to forget our culture, traditions and upbringing.
I'm educated in the west and am considered 1 of the most modern, forward thinking women in our multinational organisation but that does not mean I forget the importance and respect that is due to my mangal sutra, sindoor and all that marriage entails.
Shivaay knew exactly what he was doing, he was not the one forced into this marriage. Having forced a wedding, he cannot now arbitrarily decide he doesn't want to acknowledge it. To allow him to do so would be insulting to our traditions and even more regressive as it connotes a man in power can do anything he wants with the life of a helpless middle class girl.
Whilst Annika, yes, the marriage was forced, and yes she should be able to decide whether to acknowledge it or not, but if she chooses not to, she should not be labelled as regressive. Nayi Sochi is also about allowing a woman to decide her life for herself without the society around her dictating her actions.
