i think they had a fire or something and lost one of their kid and then adopted kanya cuz she had no parents and wasin their relatives. just a guess.

I think Kanya's parents were rich and passed away. I think Natasha might be Kanya's grandma who is rich. Maybe the grandma disowned Kanya's dad if he married someone she did not approve of and then when they passed away they left Kanya with the Gorbolde's .
