Hey!

Not just celebrities, but everyone in Indian society is submitted to utmost scrutiny by the people around them.

Do you think fat shaming is right or it helps?

Parineeti and Sonakshi have felt the pressure of having their bodies dissected and have been called names over their weight.

Do people who fat shame really care about the individual in question? I see loads of claims about how 'it's not healthy' etc, but I see more castigation than constructive criticism. Is there real concern for health?

I don't think so, 'cause the same scrutiny is not inflicted upon very skinny individuals. People assume that is healthy, even though they don't know what's happening inside the body. Pari could be throwing up or taking pills to lose weight, but people don't care as long as she is skinny.

I feel people fat shame to put down others and revel in their misery. When I was a kid, I used to get these comments and none of them ever helped me on the road to becoming healthy. It was only when I wanted to change my body that I did.

These comments only reduce people's self-esteem and don't really push them towards anything.

People say stuff like, 'you've gained so much weight' and don't realize that other people own mirrors too. 😕 I think a fat person very well knows that they're fat. Repeatedly telling them that they are does nothing for them. It might actually make them defensive and more unwilling to change, that is if there is a health concern.

What say?

i think more than fat ones, thin people are rediculed nowadays. everyone likes good thighs, good body.. thin people are often mocked for not having meat on their body. time has really changed a lot, i found my colleagues talking about pariniti that she looked sexy before.. now she looks like haddi!!! now u might have understood... thin girls are liked -- this is a myth

Ignorance on part of the one shaming.

There are many reasons one will put on weight or is fat -

1) genetics
2) health issues like - Harmonal imbalance
3) due to countless factors that you and me sitting behind computer screens are unaware of!

...I find it even more odd when people start shaming celebs - public figures who must be more body-conscious than we will ever be in our lives - if it was easy to lose weight, why would they remain fat? Plus, they have all the money and time to work on losing weight!

It was horrible when Aishwarya was plumpy for 1 or 2 years post-delivery.. You should've seen this forum and the hopeless people on here.

And, lastly, even if we assume the celeb is fat by sheer laziness - that is his/her prerogative. They are fat because they could care less.. unlike us sitting and commenting. They probably don't give a damn about what we think.

Honestly, being fat is natural, bodies come in all shapes and sizes, sometimes with fluctuating weights or body masses too.. why should it be shamed? And, the celebs are mostly plumpy - Pari, Sonakshi, and so on..

Now saying that the fat is unhealthy is another thing - it's unhealthy when it tips off BMI or is obese.

But shaming and all is just juvenile, IMO.

Nope. Most people love thin girls. Ask any guy and they will say "I want a slim, beautiful girl". Ask any girl and she will never want to be fat if given the choice between thin and fat or even otherwise. All the models, supermodels, adverts, movies, music videos, everything beauty related are full of thin girls. They are not bashed as much as an overweight person. Bashing thinness is wrong too but seriously it is kind of a known fact that thin > fat in this world. Some people actually love being underweight and there are accounts on Tumblr etc about Thinspo where girls want to get so thin that their bones show up and that is extremely beautiful to them and many, many others. There are even people who find it disgusting if a plus sized model is on the fashion magazine cover.

There can never be a time where being called thin is as offensive to a girl as being called fat/big-boned. Though both of the bashings are 100% wrong. No one should ever bash anyone for their body, it's their body and none of your business.

The world is like this right now mostly:

Curvy, hourglass body > thin body >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> fat body

But there are many people who don't like curvy bodies as well, many love thin body which is called elegant and athletic. There are MANY people who like Deepika/Alia's (thin) body type better than Sunny Leone's (curvy) body type.

OT: Yes fat shaming is a horribly mean thing to do. If a person is overweight/obese they can be told the health benefits of being in shape but bullying them for it is taking it on a whole new level which is shameful and should be stopped.

I fat shame celebs I do not know. Yes, I do. I am tired of having thunder thighs and stomach fat passed off as sexy in skimpy clothes. I like people like Deepika and Kat who put in effort to look the way they are. Few are born toned and fit, for most including normal people like me it takes massive effort. Unless you are having an injury or illness if you are in the glamour industry please take care of your body. I am an individual who puts massive effort into looking toned and believe me it is not easy to haul myself to the gym. I don't have money to have to consistent trainer. People like me look at youtube or read books to learn the new fitness, wear fitness bands and so on and make it part of a lifestyle. When actors have access to the best fitness trainers, nutritionists and so on and still look like a blimp especially on screen, I am going to call a blimp a blimp. If I fat shame, so be it. I have more sympathy and understanding for normal people for I understand how hard it is, especially for moms of small kids, not celebs.

But then, isn't the underlying assumption that everyone SHOULD look a certain way? Why does everyone HAVE to be toned?

In the past, there were times when voluptuous was in, but would it be fair to force everyone to look like that, even if they were predisposed to being skinny?

Ashley Graham is a plus size model who works out and lives a healthy lifestyle, but just because she is not thin, should she be fat shamed and called a whale?

It so happens that we're in an era where DP and Kat's bodies are ideal but beauty standards keep changing with time. Why bully someone just because they don't fit into the current beauty standard?

Also, no one questions Dpad or Kat over being too thin nor are they ever called names over it.

You can be voluptuous and toned. Many Latina and black women are. No one in their right mind will call a JLO or a Beyonce fat. They have curves, boobs and a behind. That does not mean they are fat. They are also toned because they work out.

There is a difference between voluptuous and toned which is sexy and plain fat. Most people can see the difference.
