I thought the college campus of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was based on Archie comic book series.
Where Shahrukh's character was similar to Archie, his friend's character (Kajol) was similar to Betty and his dream girl character (Rani) was similar to the sexy Veronica.
Betty is always sweet and kind to Archie while Archie openly flirts with Veronica.
It's a carefree FICTIONAL college campus.
And Karan Johar brought in the branded clothes from UK (his NRI home)...got the Friendship day bands for sentiment...showed playful ragging by college seniors...and gave the NRI twist of a foreign-bred girl (Rani) singing a bhajan like Om Jai Jagdish!
He collaborated a fantasy world with NRI characters and Hindustani values...
and we all fell for it!
I remember because I grew up reading Archie comics and watching a college story like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 was like living in a cotton-candy land.
Attractive but dreamy.
Reality, however, hits you like a ton of bricks!
