Chapter 1

In Mumbai

It was 2 A.M

He was driving in heavy rain. All of a sudden his phone buzzed. He picked up the phone, "Hello." "Are you still at work? Do you have any idea what time is it?" the person said from the other side. "I know it is 2 A.M. Don't worry. I am on the way home," He answered. "I don't understand how much a person can work? When you will get sick then you will realize," the person said. He could sense anger from the person over the phone. He said, "Ramu kaka, please stop worrying about me. Nothing will happen to me."

Ramu Kaka: do you think I don't know why you want to keep yourself busy? It's been 20 years. Everything has changed but you...?

He stopped Ramu kaka saying, "kaka please. As much as I am trying to forget my past you are trying to bring it up."

Ramu kaka: were you able to forget?

While passing a bar, he noticed that few young rich spoiled brats were trying to force themselves on a teenage girl outside of the bar. "Kaka, I will call you back," saying so he cut the call. He stopped his car near them. He got off from the car. "Let go of her," he said to those boys. "Who are you ordering this?" one of the boys said. "I said let go of her or..." He said. "Or... what? You will hit us?" the same boy said. He looked at the girl who was trying very hard in the drunken state to release herself from the grip of a boy. "You didn't answer. Will you hit us," saying so the boy raised hand to hit him but he stopped the boy by holding his wrist tightly. He twisted the boy's hand causing him to cry in pain. Seeing this other two boys came near to hit him. Once the girl was released, she hid herself behind him. Once they approached, he kicked them causing them to fall on the street. Then he started punching them. When he felt they were injured badly he released them. He looked at them and said, "Hope you will remember this lesson." Somehow those boys managed themselves to stand and left from there. Once they left, he turned to face the girl. He noticed that her one piece knee length dress got ripped and her inner parts were totally visible through the wet dress. He took off his coat and wrapped around her. "Where do you live? Come. Let me drop you off," saying so he opened the door for her. She got into the car. While strapping his seatbelt, he asked her again, "So where should I drop you off?"

"You can go straight. After 10 minutes of driving I will tell you where to turn," the girl said. There was silence in the car. While driving his all attention was on the road. After ten minutes of driving, he asked without looking at her, "Where should I make a turn? Left or right?" when he didn't hear anything, he looked at her and saw she fell asleep. "She will not wake up so easily. What should I do now?" he mumbled to himself worried. He looked at the wrist watch. It was 3 A.M. He had no other option, with this thought he drove off to his residence. Once he reached, he got off from the car and lifted the girl into his arms and then walked toward the house. Ramu kaka opened the door. Seeing the girl in his arms, Ramu kaka showered hundreds of questions, "Who is this girl? Why did you bring her here? What happened with her?" While entering into the house, he said, "Kaka, take a deep breath then ask me question one by one. Before that can you open the guest room for me?" Ramu kaka opened the guest room. he placed the girl on the bed and said looking at Ramu, "Now tell me what do you want to know?"

Ramu: Who is she?

"I don't know her. I met her on the way while I was coming home," he replied.

Ramu: you just met her and have brought her home?

"Then where should I drop her off? I don't know her address," he said

Ramu: you shouldn't have brought her here.

"Why?" He asked.

Ramu: a girl-- alone --outside at this moment...you know what I meant.

He looked at the girl and said, "She is not that type of girl you are thinking. Now turn off the light and let her sleep."

He went to his room. He grabbed his night suit and went to the wash room. While changing his clothes he remembered that that girl's clothes were also wet. After changing his clothes he grabbed one of his shirts and directly went to her room. He walked toward her bed. "But who is going to change her dress?" he mumbled to himself worried, "if she stays with this wet dress whole night, she may fall sick."

The next morning

It was 11 A.M.

The girl woke up with heavy headache. She sat on the bed holding her head. She still didn't realize were she was at that moment. "You woke up?" hearing this she raised her head to meet the person. She saw an old man who was standing at the door holding a glass in his hand. Ramu kaka walked toward the bed. "Who are you?" the girl asked, "Are you our new servant?" Ramu smiled and said, "Yes, I am a servant but not yours, someone else's."

"Then what are you doing here? You should be in that place na where you work?" the girl asked innocently.

Ramu: yes, I am in the place where I should be. But you are not.

Girl: What?

Then the girl looked at the surrounding. It was totally unfamiliar. She immediately got off from the bed. Then her eyes fell on her dress. She remembered she didn't wear this dress last night. She wondered who changed her dress. "The person who saved you last night and brought you here, this is his shirt," hearing Ramu the girl tried to remember what exactly happened last night. Once she recalled everything, though she felt relieved but she was worried thinking who changed her dress. "Is here any female member live in this house? I meant to say, the person who saved me, his wife, mother, sister?" she asked.

Ramu: no, only him and I.

Girl: Where is he now?

Ramu: He left for work already.

Handing over the glass Ramu kaka said, "Drink this you will feel better."

Girl: What time is it?

Ramu: It is 11 A.M

"I have missed my school again," she mumbled to herself.

Ramu: After freshening up come to the dining table. I have made breakfast for you.

Girl: no need. I don't want to give you more trouble.

Ramu: I have already made it. have breakfast before you go home.

After freshening up she wore her dress and the coat over it. Then she went to the dining room. while serving food Ramu's phone rang. The girl heard him saying on the phone, "yes, she woke up. Ok, no problem."

Girl: he was asking about me?

Ramu: yes.

Handing over a 500 rupees note, Ramu said, "when you came here you didn't have any purse with you. He told me to give you so that you can rent a taxi to go home."

Girl: Actually I left my purse on the street. But I don't need any money. I can pay the taxi driver once I reached home.

Ramu: you still should keep this. You never know what you may need on the way to home.

Girl: thank you. I will return this money.

Ramu smiled and said, "You don't need to. I just want you to go home safely."

Girl: but I have to come here to return this coat as I am taking it with me.

After the breakfast the girl left the place.

Two days later

In the afternoon

While Ramu kaka was cleaning the house, his doorbell rang. "Who is here at this moment," mumbling to himself, Ramu went to open the door. seeing the girl, a smile appeared on his face.

Ramu: You? Here? At this moment?

Girl: Actually, I came to return the coat I have borrowed and the money.

Ramu: Come inside.

She entered into the house. "Have a seat. Let me make coffee for you," saying so Ramu went to the kitchen. While he was making coffee the girl was roaming around the house. She noticed that the house was decorated well. Whoever decorated, he must have a good taste, she thought. Her trance broke hearing Ramu, "Your coffee is ready."

Girl: Thank you.

While sipping coffee, she asked, "Who decorated the house?"

Ramu: it was him who brought you here last night.

Girl: when he will come home?

Ramu: He never returns home before 12 A.M.

Girl: he must be hardworking.

Hearing her, Ramu kaka released a deep breath.

Girl: By the way, in this big house you two only live here, how but his parents, siblings, his wife?

Ramu: He is the only son of his parents. His parents live in Delhi.

Girl: his wife?

Ramu: he is not married.

Hearing this, the girl was little surprised as at this age he was still unmarried.

Girl: Thank you for the coffee. I have to go now as I need to make preparation for my tomorrow's exam.

Ramu: no problem. Good luck for your exam.

Girl: Thank you.

The same night when he came back home, Ramu said, "That girl came here today." He asked, "Which girl?"

Ramu: I am talking about the girl you brought her here that night.

"I see. Did she leave any of her stuff?" he said.

Ramu: no, she came to return your coat and money.

"Hm," saying so he was about to go to his room but stopped hearing Ramu, "She was asking about you. She wanted to know when you will come back home. Maybe she wanted to talk to you." Without saying anything he left from there.

Two days later

It was Sunday morning

While he was working on his laptop, his doorbell rang. "Ramu kaka, can you open the door?" he said. When he didn't hear anything from Ramu, "He must be in the washroom," mumbling to himself he got off from the couch and walked toward the door. Once he opened the door, he was little surprised seeing the girl near his door. He saw smile on her face.

Girl: hi!

"Hello!" he replied. He was still standing blocking the door.

Girl: Can I come inside?

"Oh, I am sorry. Sure," saying so he made way for her to come inside. Once she entered into the living room, her eyes fell on the laptop.

Girl: I guess, you were working. Did I bother you?

"Not at all. Come sit here," he said. While sitting on the couch, she said, "Actually, I came to say thanks to you for saving me that day. If you wouldn't be there, I don't know what would happen to me." He smiled and said, "You don't have to. Next time just be careful."

Girl: hm. Thank you.

In the meantime Ramu entered into the living room. Seeing her Ramu said, "Good to see you beta. How are you?"

Girl: I am fine and you?

Ramu: how was your test?

Hearing him, she lowered her head.

Ramu: it's ok beta. Next time do well.

There was another person who was just listening to them without uttering a word. "You two talk. I have to go out," saying so he got off from the couch.

Girl: I am also leaving now as I need to do some shopping.

"Ok," saying so he came out with his car key. Seeing her waiting for the taxi on the road, he said, "Come let me drop you off."

Girl: no thank you. I can manage.

"It is too hot outside. How long you will wait for the taxi," he said.

In the car they didn't have that much conversations. She only told him that he was this busy he had to work over the weekend too. In reply he just smiled. After dropping her off to the shopping mall, he left.

One month later

The girl was sitting in front of her parents with her head down. She could sense anger from them. "Do you know how embarrassed I was in front of your music teacher?" her father said, "he said you never showed up in his class."

Mother: why aren't you cooperating with your dad?

Girl: mom, I don't like music.

Father: do you even like other subjects? Look at your report card. You failed all the subjects.

He got off from the couch frustrated. "For whom we are doing all this? If you don't understand than what is the point? We are really ashamed to have a daughter like you," saying so he left from there. "You are our only daughter. I don't know when you will understand us," saying so her mother also left from there. "Mom, dad, do you really understand your daughter. Do you really want to know what she wants," the girl said upset.

It's been two hours she was walking. She was so miserable as she couldn't realize when she came in front of the person's house once she was saved by him. Luckily he was also coming home early that day. Once he reached home, he noticed her sitting on the bench in his garden. He walked toward her. "You? Here?" he asked. Hearing him, she realized where she was.

Girl: oh, I am sorry. Actually I didn't realize when I came here.

He could sense something was wrong. "Come inside. Let's have coffee together," he said.

Girl: hm

He knocked the door but Ramu wasn't at home. He opened the door using his key. She was sitting quietly while he went to make coffee for both of them. After a while he came back with two cups of coffee. Handing over the cup he said, "For you." While sipping the coffee, he noticed that she was still sitting quietly sad holding the cup in her hand. "I heard that if you share your pain with someone else then you will feel relieved," he said, I meant to say, you can share with your parents, siblings, relatives, friends..." she stopped him saying, "I neither have any siblings nor any friends. I can't share with my relatives."

"Have you ever tried with your parents?" he asked.

Girl: No. they are the only cause of this situation.

"Hm," he said while releasing breath.

Girl: my parents want me to become like them but I don't want to be. I don't want to be that much successful in life leaving everything behind. I don't want to be that much busy that I will forget about my children. I don't want to forget about what my children's needs. Children need the parents most. What is the meaning of that luxurious life style if there is no parents love? Though I have everything but I am very lonely. I don't have any one who I can share my pain with.

He was just listening to her without uttering a word. He didn't know why but he really felt bad for her. Maybe she was on the same boat as he was. She been keeping her pain in her heart the way he been since 20 years. Taking a deep breath he said, "Parents want their kids to be successful so their kids can live a better life. They want their kids to be strong so that in their absence children can handle any obstacles." In the meantime Ramu kaka entered into the house. Seeing him at home at this time, Ramu said, "You came home too early today?" he said, "Kaka, I was not feeling like to work too late that's why I came home early." Looking at the girl, Ramu said, "Beta, when did you come?"

Girl: half an hour ago.

"Kaka, I am starving. Please serve the dinner," he said. Looking at the girl he said, "You must be hungry too, right?" hearing him she nodded her head.

After dinner he went to drop off the girl to her house. On the way in the car the girl said, "I don't want to be a business woman like my mother. I want to be a simple house wife. I will stay home and take care of my husband and raise my kids. If there would be lacking of money but the family will be full of love." Before he could say anything, the girl said, "We are already in front of my house. Anyway thank you so much for dropping me off," saying so the girl got off from the car.

While going back to home he was just thinking about the girl. She came from a rich family. She had everything but still lonely, He thought.

Once he reached home, Ramu asked, "Did you drop her off?" he replied, "Hm."

Ramu: she is such a nice girl. She is neither my relative nor I know anything about her but still whenever I see her I feel so close to her.

He was about to go to his room but stopped thinking something. He turned to face Ramu. "Kaka, do you know her name?" he asked.

Ramu: No. I never asked her name. You don't know either?

"No," he answered.

Few days later

In XYZ school

While going to attend a class one classmate asked the other, "Kalpana, it's been three months, you never showed up. I don't know how you will manage."

Kalpana: is the music teacher too strict?

Classmate: no, he is not. But he wants his students to take this class seriously. I heard he is not teaching music for money. He is doing this only because he loves music. That's why he took out one day from his busy schedule to teach music.

Before they entered into the class her classmate said, "This is your first day, do you even know the teachers name,"

Kalpana: No

"Raghav singhania," her classmate said. "Let's get into the class as we are already 15 minutes late," saying so her classmate guided Kalpana to the classroom. They saw that the teacher was playing the piano facing his back. They quietly sit at the back. Unexpectedly kalpana was taken away by the beautiful music that was playing. She never heard this type of music before. Once the music was done playing, "Beautiful," the only word came out from her mouth. She got off from her seat and started clapping. The teacher turned to face the student who was clapping. Not only him but she was also shocked seeing each other. They were just staring at each other. Their trance broke hearing a student, "Sir, this is Kalpana Kapoor who didn't show up since three months."
