Just curious what is meaning behind of wearing sindoor? I know it is meant for married women to do the ritual but the what the meaning of this ritual?

In Hindu religions.. applying sindoor its signifies for the long life of husband.. all ancestors made this rituals we have to follow this.

How does it work? Do they pray for husband's long life using the sindoor? Another question it's compulsory for hindi women to apply it as part of good practice?

Forgive me for my ignorance but I thought the mangalsutra necklace is for the husband's long life? What is purpose of the mangalsutra necklace?
