II | Suppress

"Love is an untamed force. When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused."

- Paulo Coelho

When Saumya strode into the studio the following Sunday, she was red-faced and out of breath. Arjun, the techie looked up eagerly at her arrival, but he grew concerned as he noted her frantic state.

Approaching her swiftly, he reached out to help her, but she swatted his hands away with a fierce scowl.

"Don't." She held her hand out to halt him.

It was obvious that she was fuming. Dumping her bag unceremoniously on a spare seat, she collapsed into her revolving chair and gulped down half a bottle of water, all the while clutching her paratha tightly in one hand.

Worried, Arjun asked, "What happened?"

Saumya glared at him dangerously. Didn't she just tell him not to ask?

He looked taken aback, and Saumya instantly felt awful. Genial and sweet-tempered, Saumya was known for always being patient and tolerant. Sheepishly, she waved her paratha at him, "want some?"

Brightening straight away at the proffered olive branch, Arjun gladly tore off a little piece of her beloved paratha. For a few minutes, they sat together in companionable silence as she ate and he watched. After she was finished, she looked much calmer. She looked up to see him staring at her curiously.

"What?"

"Do you want to talk about it now?"

Furious again, Saumya launched into an animated tirade. "That moron, Rudra Singh Oberoi was holding up the street because his girlfriend wanted to pet a puppy on the road. He parked his Lamborghini right in the middle of the road, so that match stick with a bad dye job could speak baby language to a dog! Because of them, I had to get out of my auto and run half a kilometre to get here on time!"

Arjun looked alarmed. It was unlike Saumya to be so vicious and antagonistic towards anyone. In the six months that he had known her, he'd never seen her so angry or resentful before. Though he was surprised, he cut her some slack. He knew how frustrating that pretty boy could be.

Smiling, he patted her on the shoulder before gesturing towards the clock. "It's almost time for you to be on air."

"Right," she chirped, quick to return to good spirits. The thought of a brand new day, lots of callers and attempting to solve their problems motivated her endlessly. Work also helped to forget about that fool, Rudra. They had just been getting back to being on civil speaking terms, but the sight of him trying to shove his tongue down Romi's throat, left a sour taste in her mouth.

Basically, she just didn't want to think about him. Period.

"Saumya, there's a caller on hold for you," Arjun informed her hesitantly.

"But, we're not on air, yet."

He shrugged, scratching the side of his face uselessly. "He says its urgent."

Curious, Saumya nodded at him. "Alright, put him through."

"Hello, you've reached the Love Angel! How may I help you?"

"I'll let you know, that I've never done anything like this before." A low, gravelly voice declared without preamble.

His brisk tone bridged no-nonsense, and Saumya thought that he must have called the wrong number.

Saumya was confused. "You've never called anyone before?"

"Ask for advice," the man grated. "I've never asked anyone for advice, especially not a stranger."

"Well, to be fair, sometimes it's much easier to talk to someone who doesn't know you than it is to talk to your loved ones." She reasoned with an encouraging voice. "What's your name?"

"Ughh, I'd rather not say."

"Alright, Mr-I'd-rather-not-say," Saumya replied cheekily. "How can I help you?"

"Fine! It's Billu. My name is Billu."

Saumya brightened. "Billu Halwai?" The man was already so irate, and she had the most wicked desire to wind him up further. Evidently, he was of a cantankerous disposition and Saumya thought it would serve him right, to be put in his place.

"No, I'm not the halwai! She's the caterer!" The man snapped loudly.

"Who's the caterer?"

"The stupid woman I can't stop thinking about!" He groaned, sounding miserable and irritated.

"Oh," Saumya nodded in understanding. "So what's the problem? You're not much of a thinker?"

"Excuse me? I'll have you know that I'm a great thinker. In fact, I'm constantly thinking," Billu huffed indignantly, "It's just I can't stop thinking about her."

Saumya frowned. Why was the man so distressed about this? "But why is that a problem? When people are in love, it's normal for them to constantly think about their partner. Don't worry you haven't contracted some rare disease."

"I'm not in love with her!" He protested furiously.

"Why are you getting so angry, Billu Ji?!" Inwardly, Saumya giggled. She could imagine a man, perhaps in his late twenties or early thirties throwing his arms in the air with frustration.

"Don't call me that!" The man snapped sharply.

"But that is your name isn't it?" She didn't mean to antagonise him, but if she were being honest then this was rather amusing.

"Oh God! Why did I even call you? This is ridiculous!"

Saumya knew she should be offended, and a tiny part of her was miffed by the man's attitude, but clearly he was distraught and for Saumya, that took precedence over any personal offence she had sustained. "Okay, I'll call you Bhaiya! Is that any better? Now, please calm down and start from the beginning."

With a sharp exhale as if to control himself, the man resumed. "I'm getting married in two weeks, but I can't stop thinking about this other woman. How do I stop?"

"Oh," Saumya nodded sympathetically. "So that's the problem."

"Yes, it's a problem. It's a huge problem," he ranted. "No, she's the problem, and I need a solution!"

"Well," Saumya shrugged nonchalantly, "just get rid of her."

"What?"

"I assume that she's the caterer?" Saumya assumed logically, recalling his earlier statement. "Replace her, then you won't have to see her around, and you'll automatically stop thinking about her."

"It doesn't work that way!" He objected exasperatedly.

By now Saumya was actually having a lot of fun. This man was so easily riled up. It was hilarious. "What doesn't work that way?"

"Are you always like this or are you being deliberately difficult with me?" Billu demanded.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Saumya said innocently.

Billu huffed. "Look, it doesn't matter if she's not around, because I think about her anyway. Besides, replacing her isn't an option, my grandmother has a soft spot for her."

"Haven't you ever heard of the phrase: out of sight, out of mind? I think it's the only way to solve your problem. Avoid her at all costs and don't ever see her face!" Saumya grinned to herself. She knew exactly what was going on here. Her love radar was on high alert and she knew that he was about to set it off.

"That won't do anything!" The man whined. "Aren't you listening to me? I can't stop thinking about her! For the millionth time, the crazy woman is wreaking havoc in my mind and I can't concentrate on anything, not when all I want to do is see her!"

A brief bout of stunned silence followed his frustrated admission.

When she finally spoke, she sounded beyond awed. "Wow, you're like Shah Rukh Khan from Darr and she's your Juhi Chawla."

"Oh not you too!" He groaned angrily. "I'm not in love with her! In fact, I don't even care about her!"

Saumya raised an eyebrow at his ridiculousness. After such an incensed outburst, how could he deny his interest?

"Well, if you're not in love with her then why are you so obsessed with her?" Saumya demanded.

"She's strange," he began slowly, pensively as though he was trying to carefully organise his thoughts as he spoke. "Strange is an understatement. She talks to her belongings, has names for her shoes and eats potatoes. I mean who eats potatoes?!"

Saumya glared at the phone. "I eat potatoes."

"Err...not that there's anything wrong with potatoes," the man said hurriedly. "She's just obsessed with them."

"Like you're obsessed with her?"

"You aren't helping."

"Sorry, I'm not sorry." She replied unapologetically, tapping a pen rhythmically against the hardwood desk she was sitting at. Outside, she noticed, was a panicked Arjun who frantically gestured at his watch.

"Okay, look," Billu sighed heavily, trying to compose himself. "I'm not used to being defied. I've always gotten what I wanted. People respect me, people are intimidated by me, but not this girl. She's different."

"She's special," Saumya corrected him.

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Yes, okay, I'll admit it. I'm fascinated by her. She always has something to say. We're always arguing about something inane and nonsensical..."

"People who are angry at each other for the stupid little things usually are the ones who care about each other most," she said patiently, pointedly, trying not to smile. "Just saying."

"What a load of rubbish!" Billu spluttered haughtily.

Saumya wanted to bang her head against a wall. She was already having an awful morning thanks to Rudra and now, this ridiculous man who was drowning in a pool of denial. He was beyond obstinate and unwilling to budge from his ideas. The only way left to do this now, was to send a sucker punch to the gut. And that's exactly what she would do. "Alright, so I believe that you don't love her. She means nothing to you. She's merely something that fascinates you, like a rare specimen featured at a zoo. I'll believe all of that. So now the problem is that you don't want to think about her. Okay, just focus on your fiancee. I'm sure she's a lovely woman if she's tolerating you."

"Excuse me?" He was scandalised.

Saumya suddenly remembered Tia, who believed in all sorts of aromatherapy and spiritual healing processes. This cranky man could benefit from a long session with her. "You know what, Billu Bhaiya? You should meet this woman I know. She's does all sorts of meditation. It would help calm your mind!"

"God, she sounds just like my fiancee," Billu audibly shuddered. "No, I've tried all that hogwash. Nothing seems to work for me. The woman's like a bloody allergy. Like an incurable bout of hay fever. Annoying and unavoidable."

"I don't think I can help you then," Saumya replied. "I mean I only give advice. I'm not an exorcist."

"You think I'm possessed?" He yelled back incredulously. "Can you please be serious? I'm in a real dilemma here!"

Saumya's mouth hardened into a thin line. He wanted serious? He'd get serious. "Alright, listen up hotshot. No matter how much you deny it, you're in love and not with your fiancee. Ranting to me isn't going to help you. You need to confront your feelings and confess, before it's too late."

"Too...too late? What do you mean?"

"You'll be married soon, right? Well, what will happen to her after that? Surely, she's not going to wait around for you to come to your senses. Soon, she'll find someone who loves her and treats her right. She'll fall head over heels for him. Marry him, have his chil..."

"Stop."

But she didn't. "Or maybe, someday she'll decide that you never were worth her time or effort; that she spent so long trying to knock some sense into a brick wall, when she could be living her life with someone who lov..."

"I LOVE HER!"

Finally, he was candid. It had been a real uphill march, but she had achieved her goal. The walls were down and his fierce admission made all her annoyance and irritation for this impossible man, melt like an ice-cream in the Sahara. "I know. Thank you for finally admitting it to yourself."

"What should I do then?" No longer was he apathetic or cavalier. This was the voice of a man, defeated.

"You need to stop your wedding," Saumya instructed carefully. She wouldn't patronise him any longer, now that he had opened up to her.

"That's easier said than done," he grumbled, but then as an afterthought added, "what then?"

"You need to woo her!"' She exclaimed excitedly, and wished that she could be there to see it all unfold. No doubt it would be entertaining to see such an emotionally charged clash of wills!

"How do I do that?" He sounded pathetically confused.

"Well, you could go for the usual flowers, chocolates, jewellery approach, but I hardly think those will work in your case. Do something unique! Quirky! Make sure you tell her how you feel, and remember to be patient and calm."

"What if it doesn't work?" He asked quietly. "What if she doesn't want me? I've done some bad things to her before. A lot of bad things." His powerful voice seemed so small now, like the sound of a child caught stealing from a lolly jar.

Saumya felt sympathetic. "Then, you need to apologise."

"But, she doesn't want to talk to me!" He protested, sounding sullen and upset. "She bolts as soon as she sees me, as if I have some sort of plague!"

"Then show her that you regret what you did," Saumya explained patiently, kindly. "Actions always speak louder than words. Fix your mistakes. Show that you are repenting, and then tell her how you really feel."

"You think she'll forgive me?"

"I know she will."

He didn't need to say thank you to her, because Saumya could hear the gratitude in his voice. When she finally ended the call, she smiled to herself. What an amusing call it had been! He was such a headstrong man, but she could tell that underneath that tough exterior was a kind-hearted man.

If she didn't know any better, she'd think that it was Shivaay Bhaiya calling, but the thought of Shivaay Singh Oberoi asking anyone (let alone a complete stranger), for love advice was beyond ludicrous.

The call stayed on her mind for the rest of the day, and she found herself smiling at odd times, wishing that somehow, someday, she'd know of their outcome. Nothing good ever came from suppressing one's feelings, and on-air that day, she directed all her listeners to be open about their feelings and make an effort to express themselves more clearly to the person they loved.

Much later that evening, Arjun poked his head through the door. He looked terribly nervous and slightly pale. "Saumya," he began uncertainly. "Would you...I mean, can I...ummm...do you need...would you like a lift home tonight, after work?"

Saumya simply smiled at him.

What were you thinking? 😆😆 But that paratha still found its way into her hands, haan? Oh I was in splits during this whole scene with Arjun. I find this OC in your fiction so cute..
