Chapter 4
  The Nightmares

As you run from the phantoms of terror, you end up falling in a quick sand.
Struggling hard against the grip of that strong hold, what is it?
A win or a fall?
**
As she stepped into the lush green garden, she could hear the birds chirping.
The rhymes of the Blue Jays felt extraordinarily good to her ears.
It seemed, as if after ages of melancholia, a ray of euphoria marked its entry in her life.
Dressed in purple, she wore her favorite white ballerinas.
As she walked through the heavenly place, she witnessed the exquisite roses. Their fragrance building in an expanse of loveliness in the air and their presence making everything look so hunky dory.
And then there were the bright blossoming daisies, their beautiful petals screaming the word "perfection" to the hilt.
And finally came the butterflies! What a delightful sight it was! To see them bud into the most beautiful entities from their primal phases as caterpillars and then fly high, spreading the vibrancy and positivity like no other.
 .
 .
She was lost. She was mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty all around. It was surreal, and for a second she wished to pinch herself to ensure that whatever she was seeing wasn't a dream.
But it indeed wasn't.
Everything was beyond beautiful, beyond ordinary. It changed everything for her the right way, because the abstract around her made her feel like absconding everything and living in this zone, this arena, which was lovely, calm, serene, and everything a living soul could ask for.
But as she took another step, she found an abrupt change.
.
.

The silence pricked her like a sharp knife.
The chirping, the breezes, the fragrances- she could find zilch.
As if all of it that she was loving thoroughly and enjoying moments ago, never really existed in the first place. Whatever was pleasing to her eyes was now hell bent on piercing her from within.
She could suddenly feel her body going stiff, and her hands clenching into fists on their own accord.
 .
With a lump in her throat, she shut her eyes tight.
Waiting for the nightmare to be over.
Trying to gather some strength, her fists held the sides of her purple dress tightly.
.

She slowly opened her eyes, and discovered the flock of birds flying in a particular direction in the sky, as if some danger was approaching, and they were too afraid to witness it.
The moment instantly reminded her of a similar nuance that took place that day in the cemetery, when she was visiting her father's grave on his death anniversary.

The happy chirping was completely gone now, as the wave of melancholy hit the ambience, as if warning of an impending storm that would wreck havoc everywhere.
.
.

 "What's happening?"
That's the only thing she could utter, as she tried understanding what was far beyond her ability to understand.

As she turned around, a new wave of shock collided with her.
The green scenery turned into ashes, and she could see everything burning around her, all caught up in raging flames.

The trees being charred, the sky all dark.
She felt her breaths constrict as she watched the deadly scene unfold in front of her eyes.
As she tried running far away from the flames, breathing became sheer impossible.

 "Someone, please help me!"
Maybe she said that. She couldn't recollect the imprints of her own voice as the haze continued to engulf her in its clutches.

At that point, it was hard to grasp anything with logic, because all she knew was that the tranquil essence of air had utterly turned into something livid, something demonic.
She could see the flames rising, taking everything with it.

The butterflies, the beautiful flowers, the huge trees.
The fumes hurt her sight, making her vision blurred and her body weak.

Yet, she kept her efforts going.
 .

Running out of breath, she reached a corner, where the same silence welcomed her once again.

 But, without the flames.
The ferocious flames weren't there anymore, but the deafening silence was way too deadly.
 One..

 Two..

 Three..

Seconds passed, and still no fury.
 No flames..

 No burns..

As her fingers reached her arms, grazing them keenly, she could see the old bruises along with the new ones.

The new ones from the residue of the fire, the smoke.
.
.
 "Am I alive?"
 Her own question scared her.

As she traced her fingers over those bruises, to soothe away the pain, her senses returned back to her.
 She wasn't alone.

 "I.."

Her thoughts came to an abrupt halt, the moment she turned back.

Dressed in a black tuxedo, she could spot the familiar pair of dark brown eyes staring outright at her.

She could feel her heart thudding rapidly, and this wasn't just because of the escape she made moments ago, due to the endless run. This was also due to something else.
An escapade she knew no reason of, but she had to escape nonetheless.

Her breath caught, as she took a step backward.
She stumbled as her legs ached due to the long running, but if given a chance, she knew that she would run again.

 Once again..

As she took another step back, she saw him coming forward.
 The Devil coming forward.
 Towards her.
.
 .
She felt innumerable unknown feelings juggling within her, as he drew nearer.
So near that she could see his every feature, crystal clear.
Those beautiful, mysterious deep brown eyes that held so many unexplored threads in them.
 His chiseled jaw line.
 His flawless skin.
 His perfect lips.
 .
 .
As he stood just a feet away from her, she tried hard to fathom the endless mysteries in those eyes.

Her lips shut tight in a straight line, as she observed something was missing in his eyes.
.

 The rage..
 The hatred..
Her mind couldn't settle this uncanny dispute against her heart.
.
 .
She took a deep breath, as she saw him looking at her, not even for a second blinking his eyes.
His gaze suggested, he was trying hard to figure her, the same way she was trying hard to comprehend him.
Time seemed to freeze, as she found myself locked in his captivity, in those mystic dark brown orbs.

Breaking the eye lock, he kept forward his right hand that held something in it.

 Something that felt so divine.
.
 .
 A bunch of violet roses.
.
"How did he know that I love violet roses?"
.
"But why is the devil giving them to me?"
 .
The questions instantly popped in her mind, furthering her perplexity, bringing her to no logical stance as it added to her misery.
As her mind struggled with the questions, she saw his eyes holding so much compassion, so much warmth, as if everything else that had happened long ago was just background noise that had no relevance whatsoever.
 Who was he?
 ..What was he?
 The Devil?
 Or..
 ..An Angel?
Caught in the serenity of those divine eyes, her heart couldn't defy him any longer. It couldn't defy the warmth, the humbleness, and the compassion that they conveyed so deeply.
 .
Her body became numb, as she took the bunch of violet roses with both her hands, still trembling, unaware of what was really happening, yet sanguine that this wasn't going to harm her.
 .
 .
As she accepted it, she saw his face, showing a sign of relief.
 A sign of contentment.

Breathing in the irresistible fragrance of the roses, she lifted her head to meet his gaze, only to find him standing afar..

Far away, with his back facing her.
A frown took over her face, still unknown to what was happening.
As she kept staring at the dark figure, a sensation of pain commenced in her hands. The apocalyptic moment braced her existence as the magnitude of pain shot high with each passing second, making her flinch, and she found herself helpless as the destruction began to look as something beyond repair.

Still unable to figure the game, her gaze shifted to the flowers in her hand.
The devastating flames rose again as she saw the roses getting burnt into ashes with no mercy, the beauty of them all gone as only mayhem replaced them.
 .
.
Throwing the burning roses on the ground, she searched her way out from the fire, but all she saw was the fiery disaster.

The fire taking over her, her body ached, as the flames burnt her skin and her soul cried out in excruciating pain, but there came no one to her rescue.

Her screams couldn't manifest the burning agony from within her, as the flames swallowed her.

As she felt the ever invincible death taking her in its embrace, she saw him for the last time.
.
 .
The rage returning in his eyes, his lips curved up into an evil smile, depicting his joy at that eerie victory he somehow got by jeopardizing her existence.

Her painful cries amused him and his evil laughter grew louder.
She could no longer feel herself, as her body finally gave up, making her fall to the ever indispensible grim reaper's curse and she knew, her life was thoroughly sucked out of her, and there was no peace for her soul anymore.
 .

 The ending..

 No pain..

All she framed in that last moment of hers was the essence of human emotions finally gone, with the echoes of his deadly laughter still ringing in her ears, reminding her of the seeming angel who had wicked wings, which flew high in the merry of killing her, and satiated his thirsty soul by that fact.
Life was gone, and so was she, but the loud sound of her phone's alarm suddenly brought her back, waking up from that deadly nightmare.

 *

She jerked up, sitting on her bed, panting like crazy as she desperately hugged her knees in despair.

Running her fingers through her hair, she rubbed the sweat off her face, still struggling for breath.
 .
 "Again that same nightmare!"
 She mumbled to herself.

It had been four days since that incident at the cemetery, yet it was still fresh in her mind. Ever since that day, the same nightmare had disturbed her like anything and there was no way she could circumvent them.
Heck! Even the so-called dream catchers were of no help.
She tried desperately to get rid of them, but no, they were never ready to become history.

As she recalled the nightmares, which became a part of her life since only so recently, her fingers touched her neckline.

 "The necklace is gone."
..She couldn't help sulking at the loss.
Though her mom was totally negligent about it, but something made her feel restless.
She didn't know the legit reason behind it, but to her it was only the fact that outgrowing attachments was way too hard.
Be it objects or people, when you grow attached to it, it is way too hard to let go. And here, the necklace had accompanied her since so long.
It was her grandma's belonging and hence, it was too special for her.
Ever since she came to know life, it had been with her and now, it was gone.

 Maybe forever.
.
"Stop being so dramatic, Khushi!"
She mocked herself as she couldn't have a grip on her own thoughts.
But she couldn't deny that it indeed was bothersome.
Drinking water from the glass on her bedside table, she took a deep breath.
 "Breathe Khushi. Breathe."
She motivated herself.

"After all.. It was.. It was just a necklace.."
She finally managed to convince herself.
 .
 .
As she hit her cell's snooze button for the umpteenth time now, her eyes saw the time.
 5. 00 a.m.

 "It's already morning?"
She questioned herself, sounding as stupid as ever.
Getting the duvet off her body, she stood on her feet, fixing her hair into a quick messy bun.

As she assessed her own reflection in the mirror, her mind threw a range of questions, which only highlighted-
"Did I dream about the Devil, whole night?"
 .
 .
Unable to control the charges by her own mind, she felt a jolt of disgust run through her veins, for herself.
Giving up on all the baseless queries, she ran downstairs.
She needed to get out of this sh*t!
She had seen a lot of things in life, good and bad, but none had impacted her this gravely. But she was determined that she couldn't let it rule her so much.
Agreed, this wasn't just another trivial thing, but this wasn't the only thing in her life to worry about!

She wanted fresh air and nothing could be better than the early morning breeze, she thought.
As she quickened her pace through the stairs, her steps abruptly came to a halt when she suddenly saw everyone standing with a huge smile on their faces.
Surprised by this unexpected turn of events and everyone's kind gesture, she stood still on the last stair in her living room, when she heard every one shouting at the top of their voice----

 "HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY, Khushi!!"
