Chapter 6 - A Fight and A Kiss
Swara breathed a sigh of relief as she saw Sanskar. She was able to quell her fears, partially. One of the men left Swara's arm and drew his sword out of the sheath. He immediately charged at Sanskar. A fight ensued between them. The swords clanged against each other as both Sankar and the man both tried to defeat one another.
Swara's one arm was now free and she immediately pulled out her sword and gave her captor, who was looking at the fight ahead, a push with her body. It caught him by surprise and he fell a few steps back. He groaned and took out his sword. Swara shifted her weight from one foot to another, waiting for the man to charge.
He smirked at Swara, thinking how a puny and most probably untrained girl would ever take him down. His smugness wiped off from his face when he charged and she parried the blows one after another. All those physically draining sessions with Sanskar at the camp were proving productive. She had hated Sanskar then for putting so much strain on her but now she was inwardly thanking him.
Swara soon gained an upper hand on the man. She ducked under the shaft of his sword while he was swinging it over her head and was successful in removing it from his hand. His sword fell on the ground with a loud clang.
"Not so confident now, are you?" Swara scowled at the man. The tip of her sword was pressed against his chest.
She looked behind her back for a second to see how Sanskar was doing. Grabbing the opportunity, the unarmed man immediately ran away. It happened in a blink. Swara wanted to run after him, but she knew it was futile.
She turned around and saw the other man lying on the ground unconscious. Sanskar was standing above him, putting his weapon back in the sheath.
She picked up her pace and walked toward Sanskar and without thinking hugged him. "Thanks," she whispered, her face pressed on his chest. Swara closed her eyes and felt herself relaxing in his arms. She was so scared a few minutes ago and now she felt safe.
Sanskar looked down at Swara in surprise. Her arms were around his neck. His hands lay awkwardly on his sides. He didn't know if to embrace her or push her away. He slowly lifted his arms and gently placed it around her back. His breathing slowed down. Why was he doing this? He thought to himself. He didn't even like her, did he?
Swara felt Sanskar's arms around her back and she smiled. It was so calm and peaceful here, in the middle of nowhere, in the arms of Sanskar. In the arms of Sanksar! She quickly opened her eyes as if waking up from a nightmare, and pushed him back.
"What are you doing?" she asked him.
"What am I doing?" he repeated, "You were the one who hugged me."
"So? I was tired. I was scared," Swara reasoned, "You left me alone with these men."
"I didn't leave you alone, you bit me and ran away!" he countered.
"Whatever," she scoffed, "Don't think this hug means anything."
He shook his head, "Just keep your hands to yourself."
Swara gritted her teeth. How could she be relaxing in his arms? He made her so angry.
Just then they heard someone call out to them. They immediately ran toward the voice and found Lakshya lying on the ground. His head was bleeding and he was unconscious. There were three-four men gathered around him. Ragini was sitting next to him, tears rolling down her eyes.
When Ragini saw Swara, she got up and hugged her. "There were these men," Ragini said between sobs, "they attacked us and wounded Lakshya."
"It's okay," Swara ran her hand over Ragini's head trying to console her.
"We need to leave right away," Sanskar ordered the men. They lifted Lakshya and placed him over a horse. Swara and Ragini mounted their horses and they rode back to camp.
---------
It was night fall by the time they reached the tent. Lakshya was carried to his tent and Uttara's mother tended to his wounds. Ragini wanted to go with Lakshya but Sanskar called her to his room. Swara followed them.
Sanskar cleared his throat, "There is a reason why we don't venture out in these woods, alone. There are robbers out there, real robbers who will kill you for jewelry and money." He was looking at Ragini who was teary-eyed.
Swara spoke for her, "It wasn't Ragini's decision to go. Your brother made her. So maybe you should lecture him, rather than her."
Sanskar shot an angry look at Swara, "I am talking to Ragini, not you Princess."
"And I am speaking on behalf of my friend," she replied defiantly.
"My brother is lying on his bed, unconscious and wounded because he went out with your friend," Sanskar retorted.
"It was your brother's idea to leave camp, not hers. So if it is anyone's fault, it's Lakshya's," Swara countered.
"Stop it!" Ragini interrupted in frustration, "Please. Lakshya is wounded and we should be focusing on him, rather than fighting with each other." She looked at Sanskar, "This will not happen again," and walked out of the tent.
Swara spoke angrily, "How dare you talk to her like that? She was already so upset and crying."
"I think you should leave too," Sanskar replied coldly.
Swara shook her head and walked to him. She stopped when she was at a foot's distance from him, "You were rude to her and I don't like it. Don't speak to her like that."
Sanskar turned to look at Swara. Her brazenness surprised him. She was different than the princesses he had met at courts earlier. She was not lady like at all. The way she sat, talked, fought - it was nothing like royalty. If he had not known from before, he would never have thought she was a princess. Ragini on the other hand talked and behaved like one.
"You sure defend your handmaid a lot, princess," he replied.
"First of all, she is not a handmaid, she is..." Swara paused, "...my lady-in-waiting. Don't you know the difference? I thought you had spent a good portion of your life in a palace," she replied sassily, "And secondly she is my friend."
Sanskar rolled his eyes and turned the other way. He didn't have time for this. Swara grabbed the collar of his shirt and made him look at her, "Don't ignore me."
Shocked, his eyes moved from her hands, which were grabbing his collars, to her infuriated face. He clenched his teeth and immediately grabbed her wrist. He pushed her back and pinned her against the wall.
"Don't take my silence for submission," he breathed on her face. His hands were tightly clutching her wrists and their bodies were lightly touching one another. His face was just inches apart from her. Up close he saw how beautiful she was. She had big black eyes; her hair was falling on her forehead, partially covering her eyes. His breathing slowed and his heart began pacing faster.
Swara gulped nervously as she realized how close Sanskar was to her. Her body was pressed between the wall and him. She had a fluttery feeling in the pit of her stomach. She bit her lower lip, as if waiting for him to make a move, to do anything. Sanskar's grip on her wrist lessened and he brought his lips closer to hers.
Swara's gaze flicked from his eyes to his lips. What was he going to do? And why was she not doing anything? Her mind told her to push him back but it looked like her body had a will of it's own. She was immobile.
Sanskar came close to her and planted a kiss on her cheek. She closed her eyes at the sensation of his lips on her cheeks. It sent waves across her body. His lips slowly moved to her jawline and he kissed her again above her neck. Gradually his mouth moved down to her neck as he left a trail of kisses. Her heart was pounding wildly against her ribcage. One moment she was furious at him and the next moment she was being kissed by him.
Sanskar felt her soft skin against his lips. He knew she trembled every time he kissed her and he was enjoying it. He thought she would stop him but she didn't. He let go of her wrist and touched her face lightly with the tip of his thumb. He moved his thumb from her cheeks to her lips and touched her gently. Her lips quivered at his touch and her eyes had a look of wonder.
At that moment, all he wanted was to taste her lips. He had never felt this kind of attraction before. Without thinking he closed the distance between them and kissed her lips. She parted her lips and he deepened the kiss. At that moment she felt like she had never wanted anything more than to feel his arms around her and his lips against hers.
Sanskar's lips caressed her and she moaned in pleasure. She ran her hand through his hair and kept pulling him closer to her. He was kissing Swara, the girl who was annoying him just a few minutes ago. Kissing Swara - a princess.
Princess - the word jolted him. He pulled apart and took a step back. She looked at him in confusion. He can't kiss a princess. He couldn't and shouldn't even want to kiss a princess. He looked here and there, thinking of saying something but nothing came to his mind. He straight away left the room.
Swara watched as Sanskar walked out. Her back was still propped against the wall and she closed her eyes. What happened all of a sudden? One moment they were so close and the next, he was literally running away from her. She took a deep breath and gathered her thoughts.
She shouldn't be this close to him, ever again.
---------
It had been 4 days since the attack in the valley of flowers. Lakshya was recovering from his wounds. Ragini never left his side these past 4 days. She was with him, taking care of him, tending to all his needs. No one could ever expect a princess to toil like this, Swara thought. And that is why Ragini was different from the others. She was so down-to-earth. She had no qualms about serving a commoner.
Lakshya was asleep and Ragini was sitting by his side when Swara walked in the tent, on a fine sunny morning.
"How is he doing?" Swara asked as she sat near Ragini.
Ragini gave an encouraging smile, "Much better than before. Uttara's mother said that the external wounds have already begun to heal. With a good bed rest, he'll be fine in a couple days."
Swara looked at Ragini. She had dark shadows underneath her eyes, "You need to take some rest."
Ragini shook her head, "I am fine."
Swara placed her hand on Ragini's, "You look tired. You have been by his side for 4 days now. You haven't eaten properly. Please take a break; at least for a few minutes?"
Ragini gave some thought and nodded, "Okay, I'll be back in sometime. Please sit with him till then?"
Swara nodded, more so to send Ragini away. She gave a weak smile and left.
Swara looked at Lakshya. He wasn't a bad person - he had saved Ragini from drowning and then fought with the robbers in the woods when they wanted to capture Ragini. Ragini had told her how bravely Lakshya took on three men to defend her. Ragini was grateful and hence the personal attention.
But Swara knew it was more than gratefulness. Swara had known the princess since they were toddlers. Ragini was behaving very differently. Her worry about Lakshya was not because she considered him just as a friend. Swara had seen how Ragini looked at Lakshya. She knew Ragini was falling for him.
Lakshya stirred in his sleep. He kept his hand on Swara's hand. She widened her eyes in shock. He was asleep or sub-conscious. She wondered why his hand was on hers when he whispered, "Ragini." It was barely a whisper but Swara could make out the name.
She slowly slid her hand from his grasp. This was a dangerous territory and she needed to prevent Ragini from entering.
