Chapter 7 - The Confession
By the end of the week, Lakshya had fully healed. It had been 3 weeks since their abduction now. Swara had given up all hopes on being rescued by Prince Vikram. Sanskar had resent him their demands so many times now. It was clear Vikram didn't want to pay.
Swara wondered why King Shekhar and Queen Janki weren't taking any action regarding the messages. Maybe they didn't know. It could be possible. Given what she had heard from the Maheshwaris about Vikram and what she had seen with her own eyes, she strongly believed that the Gadodias didn't even know about the notes.
"What are you thinking?" Ragini asked Swara. They were in their tent.
Swara shook her head, "Nothing important," she lied.
She didn't want to trouble the princess. Although looking at Ragini, no one would think that they were kidnapped. Ragini looked content. She was humming a tune to herself and slicing fruits.
"Let me cut those fruits," Swara offered to help.
"No, it's okay. These are for Lakshya," Ragini explained.
Swara raised an eyebrow, "You are doing this for Lakshya?"
Ragini nodded, "It's the least I can do for him. He saved my life twice."
"Is it only gratefulness or something else?" Swara asked blank-point.
Ragini dropped the knife. She stammered, "What... do you mean?"
"I didn't want to talk to you earlier, but I think it's high time now," Swara sighed handing over the fallen knife, "Do you like Lakshya?"
Ragini froze. She started wringing her hands, "Is it bad if I like him?"
Swara held her head in her hands. It was evident that Ragini liked him. This shouldn't have happened. Swara was a little relieved that Ragini didn't love him, did she?
She spoke softly, "Princess, you might think that I am interfering, but I only wish the best for you. You have a life out there, a real life and a kingdom to rule. Do you honestly believe that your and Lakshya's relationship will be accepted back home? Lakshya, maybe, he likes you because he thinks you are a commoner and he can envision a future with you. But once he gets to know you are a princess, do you think he would go ahead with this?"
Ragini gave a weak smile, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there. At this moment I don't even know for sure if he likes me or he is flirting."
Ragini picked up the plate of fruits and walked towards the door, "We'll talk about this later."
---------
Ragini pondered over Swara's words as she entered Lakshya's tent. He grinned when he saw her.
"I missed you," he said as she kept the plate on a nearby table.
She smiled, "Do you say that to all the girls?"
"Nope, only the pretty ones," he quipped. But Ragini was not amused. She was risking a lot to be with him and she had to know for sure what he felt.
"Tell me honestly Lakshya, is all this just a game for you?"
Lakshya walked over to her and caught her arms, "What is up with you today? Why are you sulking all of a sudden?"
"Do you feel anything for me?" Ragini blurted and immediately regretted. What was she doing? She was a princess and a princess never chased a guy.
Lakshya didn't say anything. His silence answered her question. She nodded, half embarrassed and half in dejection, and began to leave when he pulled her towards him.
The next moment his lips were on hers, kissing her. His lips were moving against hers, gently at first and then passionately, devouring them. He wrapped his hands around her waist tightly. She responded by wrapping her hands around his neck. It was Ragini's first kiss and she enjoyed every bit of it.
He pulled away after sometime and whispered, "Does that answer your question?" Ragini blushed and lowered her eyes. It certainly did.
Lakshya didn't let go off her. She lifted her in his arms and placed her on the bed. Ragini's heart started to pound frantically.
"Lakshya..." she began to speak when he placed a finger on her lips. He placed soft kisses on her forehead, cheeks and lips, moving down to her neck. She curled her toes at the sensation. Her hands were running over his back, pulling him closer.
He drew back and looked at her. She was gorgeous and he couldn't stop himself. He didn't want to... His fingers went near her shirt and he unbuttoned slowly. Ragini trembled at his touch. She didn't say anything. She wanted him, she desired him.
"You're beautiful," he whispered as he kissed the crook of her neck. Slowly he took off his shirt and closed the gap between their bodies - their bare skin touching one another. Ragini moaned in pleasure as they became one.
--------
Ragini was in bliss. She had never experienced such sensation, such emotions ever before. She cuddled against Lakshya. His arm was around her bare back. His fingers were moving lightly, tracing patterns on her skin.
"That was amazing," he spoke and placed a soft kiss on Ragini's forehead.
"It was my first... time...," Ragini trailed off, a bit embarrassed to admit.
Lakshya turned to face her, astounded, "I am your first?"
She nodded shyly. He prodded, "Was it all right? I didn't hurt you, did I?"
Ragini's cheeks turned pink and she lowered her eyes, "It was wonderful."
Lakshya smiled. Ragini raised her eyes to meet his and he realized she had tears, "Laskhya all this is meaningful to me. It's not just casual. Over the past few days I have fallen for you... I... I love you."
Lakshya breath caught in his throat. "Ragini..."
She whimpered, "You don't have to say anything. I just wanted to let you know how I felt."
He gave a peck on her lips, "I love you too, Ragini."
---------
Swara twirled a loose stand of hair in her fingers. She was sitting near the river bank, alone. Ragini had been gone for quite some time now. Swara wanted to see what was taking her so long, by going in Lakshya's tent, but decided against it.
She sighed and flicked her hair back. Sanskar hadn't spoken to her since their interaction' in his tent seven days back. That was one hell of a day - fighting with robbers, then Sanskar kissed her. She shivered at the thought of his lips and hands on her skin. She didn't want him to stop. She never understood why he left her all of a sudden. By the way he was kissing and touching her, she knew he wanted her; then why the aloofness?
He was not even training her in sword fighting now. That was one major source of time pass for her and now she had absolutely nothing to do. Ragini was busy with Lakshya and she didn't really know the other members of the group baring Uttara.
She shut her eyes and ran her hand over her face, thinking her next course of action when she heard footsteps. She got up to see who was coming. It was her and Ragini's favourite spot away from the camp. She had the sword training sessions here with Sanskar. Apart from that no one used to come here.
The figure appeared from behind the bushes. It was Sanskar. He stopped in his tracks when he saw her, "Oh... I didn't know you were here."
"Else you would run away, again? Like the other day?" Swara sneered. She didn't know why she said that. She was angry at him but now he would think she was interested in him. Which was not true, she chided herself. She didn't like him, did she?
"You are offended because I kissed you or because I walked out?" He asked in surprise.
"Because you kissed me!" she lied. She didn't mind the kissing part at all. In fact she was angry that he stopped.
"Looks like you are miffed because I walked out," he smirked.
Swara shot him an angry look. He was right but she didn't want to give him the pleasure of knowing that. "Don't flatter yourself," she retorted, "And why are you talking to me? You have been avoiding me for a week now."
"Well, I knew I crossed a line that day," he spoke seriously.
Swara raised an eyebrow, "Crossed a line?"
Sanskar nodded, "I shouldn't have done that. You are a princess and I am an outlaw. It doesn't make any sense for us to get involved."
"That's what I have been telling Ragini!" Swara exclaimed, "A princess and a commoner can never be together. But she won't understand."
Sanskar felt a bit hurt even though Swara only reverberated his words. She was a princess, and she was acting like one. Why did that surprise him?
"I'll leave then," he said and walked away swiftly.
Swara stood there, dumb-struck. What was up with him? He avoided her for a week, then had a two-minute conversation with her, then avoided her again.
She pressed her forehead against her palm in exasperation.
---------
Ragini came back to her tent an hour after midnight to find a sulking Swara. "What happened to you?"
Swara scoffed, "Sanskar."
"What did he do?"
"Nothing," Swara replied. That was the problem. He didn't do anything. She gave herself a mental slap for thinking like that. Why did it matter if he didn't talk to her? She turned her gaze towards Ragini who looked even more cheerful. "You are in a good mood, Princess," Swara commented.
Ragini pursed her lips, trying to suppress a smile.
"What is it?" Swara prodded. She was curious.
"I'll tell you," Ragini replied, "but you'll not tell a soul and you'll not judge me."
Swara shrugged her shoulders, "Why will I judge you?"
"Something happened," Ragini began, "with... Lakshya."
"Okay?" Swara stated, unsure of where this was going.
"Swara!" Ragini spoke impatiently, "Do I have to explain you everything?"
Swara furrowed her eyebrows, "Did you guys... Kiss?"
Ragini blushed, "yes... and one thing led to another and we-."
Before Ragini could complete, Swara gasped, "Oh my God! Tell me you didn't sleep with him!"
"Relax, Swara. I knew what I was doing," Ragini tried to placate her friend.
Swara's hands covered her mouth, "I don't believe this. You and Lakshya!" Swara began muttering to herself.
"I love him," Ragini confessed, "And he reciprocates my feelings."
Swara was still in a state of shock. The princess of Gadodia had slept with an outlaw. "Princess, I don't know what to say... You gave him your maidenhood."
Ragini laughed, "Swara, don't be so dramatic!"
"I am not being dramatic," Swara protested, in a soft tone, "I don't have any issue with you sleeping with anyone. It's just the person with whom you had the... thing."
"So it would be okay if I had slept with a prince?" Ragini countered.
"No," Swara opposed and replied honestly, "At least that relationship would have a future."
"Are you saying I should choose money over love?" Ragini questioned her.
Swara shook her head, "Of course not, but Princess, Lakshya and you will not have a future together. He is a fugitive. If he ever steps out in public, he will be killed. Will you be on the run your entire life with him, away from your family and duty? The rules and customs will not allow it. And this will just lead to heartbreak and pain later on."
Ragini's smile ceased, "I know the customs. You are my friend. You should support me. I have never felt this alive ever. I just now told you that I am in love, for the first time in my life and all you can think about are the customs? You should be happy for me Swara..."
Swara knew this argument with Ragini was futile. She would never understand her point of view. She bit her lips trying to hide her disagreement, "I am sorry. I shouldn't have said that. All this is new for me... I am sorry..."
Ragini placed a hand on Swara's shoulder, "It's okay. We just need to sleep over it. We'll talk tomorrow with a fresh mind. Goodnight."
Saying this, Ragini crawled to her bed. Swara couldn't sleep a wink. It was her duty to protect and guide the princess. Ragini was committing a blunder and Swara needed to put a stop to this. Since Ragini was in no mood to listen to her, Swara knew she had only one option.
Swara quietly walked out of her tent. She had to talk to him. He was the only one who could help.
Swara gulped nervously as she entered Sanskar's tent.
