@Beagleboy
Sorry for the late reply! Very interesting take.
1. Yes, he did miss his friend more than the girl he loved. However, those two are not mutually exclusive. For him, she can never just be the best friend.
Regarding Suman's romantic feelings for Shravan - now that I look at it, they were always there but majorly underplayed. Note her excitement when he returned, to the way she looked at him through her car mirror as he walked away to the way she bore her heart to him during the dance by saying words like never leave me again or I don't want to dance with anyone to the way she weeped when Shravan got engaged to Urvashi. All those were clear indications that he's not just a friend for her. She does see him as a man, & I think somewhere that was heightened by the fact that he returned as a really good looking, hot guy. IMO, she started developing romantic feelings for him when he was no longer in her life.. she started missing him to realising the value he had in her life when he was around, to fixating/awaiting his return to subconsciously developing a crush for him.
2. Initially I though the same way as you. Maybe I am giving more credit to the CVs here than deserved, but nothing in this show so far has been kuch bhi ainvayi. There's been clear reasoning behind why things have happened & why characters behave in a certain way.
So I feel this flirting (which is clearly just Shravan being naughty with his best friend & Suman overthinking things) was needed to make Suman realise her feelings. Why this way? Because if not for Preeta's intervention, Suman would have never realised that she loves Shravan. They would just go on with the status quo because that is a comfortable zone for both of them. The kiss drama to emphasise the fact that nothing's changed between them (even though now she loves him) but rather there is an added sense of awareness of his physical proximity - something that indicates more than friendship. It couldn't have been done any other way because if you look at the intimacy they share, it is no different than what a boyfriend/girlfriend or a married couple would have, minus the physical proximity.
I have to admit though this whole physical proximity angle could have been brought out more organically, rather than through Preeta filling ideas in Suman's head that Shravan is going to kiss her - why would he do that? He never did anything more to let her know that he loves her.
Shravan is a charmer. Add to that the harmless flirting he does around women. I don't think he's flirting with Suman at the moment, but he clearly did when he was trying to lure her into the party & he became very well aware then that the charm he uses on women, works on her too. And that I feel in a subconscious way pushes him to corner her etc because afterall she is the woman he loves.
3. Yes, agree with you there. He didn't make much out of her gestures.
I don't think Suman is messed up, rather I feel the story is constantly being told from Shravan's POV. They've always focused much more on Shravan Malhotra - the man, & Shravan Malhotra - the lover, so much so that I feel the focus on Suman too has been to allow Shravan to act, & feel. Its high time IMO that they start focusing on Suman. Why she did what she did back then, why she never contacted him & most importantly, when is it that she developed romantic feelings for Shravan.. With this upcoming track, I do hope the focus shifts more to Suman's charcter.
