Stand up and be counted.
Its takes a lot of gumption to stand up in a room full of people who do not like you and give an opinion that too when it is against a popular mandate. The courage to do is fuelled by ones strong belief in that opinion, belief in the chance that you will be heard and maybe appreciated. Opportunity is all that is required. .
For me Hammie the episode was about RESPECT . In any relationship love is the bricks and respect the mortar that keeps it all together.
Viplav sitting by the swing is regretful that he misspoke about the first marriage. As he explains he is still learning the ropes of a marriage and the responsibilities that come with it. A girl when growing up is conditioned that she will have to leave her parents and join another family when she gets married. Its inbuilt that they need to learn to adjust. In contrast there is a lack of focus on the guy and his conditioning. Him being told that not only do you have to accept this new person in your life but responsible for being the bridge specially the wife and the mother. He fails to recognize that he is the meat between the sandwich . Demands on him are as high as a new bride. Viplav is right when he says he has much to learn and for that I applaud him .
Dadaji wishes to establish peace and harmony in the house . As a patriarch of the household he calls upon Viplav to go easy on RAja as he is not here for long. I wonder why does he care that Vip & Raja get along ? Viplav unhesitantly gives his opinion about the "Rakshas" and promises nothing. Raja finding it a perfect opportunity jumps in to play the prestige card with DT and slyly gets him to agree on introducing him to the Benaras society by arranging a Mahabhog. What is it about Raja that impresses DT so much ? Flattery ? A major flaw in DT characterization is him being a maha pandit and the politics involved in that position does not recognize a man for who he is . I explain it to myself that he is getting old and is looking for an heir and confidant and Viplav does not seem to be that .
The Mahabhog is announced to the family to which Raja & Shallu cheer gleefully. DT asks Viplav what he thinks who in turn posses the question to his wife. Briefly the thought of a henpecked husband went thru my mind similar to that of Kanak who interrupts to say that Bauji's word is final there is no debate. Viplav wanting his wife to have sa y in the family matter insists that she gets a chance to speak which is endorsed by dadaji.Dhani suggests a meal for the poor and to refrain from any display of riches the exact opposite of what DT had in mind. She reminds dadaji of his kindness and acceptance of her and her widowhood and this act will get the entire family more blessing. DT barely able to keep his distaste in check agrees to her suggestion.
For me this scene was very significant from the point of view of Viplav giving Dhani the opportunity and respect to voice her opinion. Dhani for her FIL is the vidhwa from the streets, for her MIL the bhikaaran , for Shallu the gawaar but the one person who sees her for who she is , is Viplav , and I admire that about him .
Kanaks invites Dhani to join her on a visit to the temple and Dhani naively thinks it to be a good start. Viplav is skeptical and empowers her to be courteous and polite to his mom if she is rude and not hesitate to give her an appropriate answer. Again liked the way he gave her the confidence to stand up for herself. Kanak throws a challenge at her to accept to cook the Mahabhoj single handedly and is taken aback when she accepts.
The episode closes with Viplav & Dhani being suspicious about the real reason of the Mahabhoj proposed by Raja and their decision to confront him about it.
As I said the entire episode for me was Viplav and him growing up as a brother , husband and keeper of Tripathi family prestige. Raja continues to irritate and Shallu seems to have joined the brigade .
