I think that TV doesn't want TV to progress. The big channels, the producers and the actors (the smart ones ex: divyanka) have figured out that TV is not content, it's Business. Your TRP dictates your ad revenue, your budget and your market rate. It's weird, but tv in 90s wasn't for masses, simply because not every house had one. and now, almost all households have TV and or access to aTV. So producers/ tv channels, simply use basic psychology of airing for years, M-F and get ppl attached to characters. That's the only eqn that matters. Hence the soaps run for years, because masses are attached to characters, the stupid ones, the evil ones, the grandma who won't die, etc.
The actors, specially ruling tv now, Anita hassandani, hina khan, divyanka, the know this, and have stuck it out and command big bucks, money they wouldn't get if they went to Movies, and competed with sleazy producers, gay actors and the seedy underbelly of BW. Simpler to stick to aTV and make $$ (bottom line) And tv isn't small anymore. The actors have PR, managers, go on promo tours, command their own fan base, and audience in millions. The producers spend in crores to make $$$ and crew, MUA, designers, everyone has profited. It's a far cry from the 90s, where you really had to focus on content, acting to stand out. I wonder if the actors 90s shows we refer so much, thought tv would be as big as it is today.Ofc, you get few who fall off the radar, o r foolishly turn back on them only to return. Smart ones, leverage tv fame to get into character movie roles and balance that. I think as long as masses don't demand change, tv is going to put minimal effort in creativity, content but still laugh all the way to the bank.
