Now, the charming Zubeen makes his debut on television in a reality show, Jhoom India. New age musician Zubeen Garg sincerely believes he is a born singer. At an age when most toddlers barely warble, Zubeen learnt to sing a few notes! He was barely three years old, when his musical journey began back home in Assam. A trained singer, Zubeen studiously stayed away from professional music until he graduated. He found celebdom in mainstream Bollywood, with the chartbusting Ya Ali number in Gangster last year. Now, the charming Zubeen makes his debut on television in a reality show, Jhoom India. A self-confessed sufi singer, Zubeen insists he's also been influenced by western music, Sting being an all-time favourite. Zubeen's debut Assamese album, Anamika, was a huge hit and since then he has never looked back. In fact, Zubeen says he wasn't particularly sold out to the Mumbai dream. He says, I sing as many as 600 songs a year in Assam and my albums sell 20 lakh copies. I always felt that when I live like a king in Assam, why should I look out for work in Mumbai? His initial days in Mumbai could have been tough, but for Ranjit Barot, his almost godfather. Zubeen rewinds, I was completely alone when I came here for the first time. One of the first people to help me out was Ranjit Barot. Even Pritamji and Anand Raaj Anand were quite helpful. The versatile Zubeen, who's also won the best supporting actor award for his film Deshbandhu, reveals some future plans, I am making a film, Chakra, with a very unusual subject. The lead role is a very crucial one for which I have selected an actor friend. I may play the supporting role apart from directing and composing the music. Also coming up is a five-star resort on river Brahmaputra. And that's not all. Zubeen has ambitious musical plans too. In the pipeline is a special modern Indian lounge album, a remix version of SD Burman songs. He says, It is an experimental album and I have spent a lot on it. Apart from that 'Paakeza', my solo album of north-east folk and an English album named Where The Sun Rises are in planning stages. Zubeen's musical style has evolved from western and Indian folk. The young singer croons in several languages including Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, Telegu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, English and almost all the north-eastern languages. But at the end of the day if he were to describe himself, he would like to call himself, a folk singer. |

Blog this story
As a music composer Jatin Pandit has produced some of the most melodious tracks. However, not many know that the musician is an able singer himself.
Jatin has crooned for hit Films like 'Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar' and 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani'.
The Voice of India judge will soon be seen as a contestant in Sahara One's upcoming musical show 'Jhoom India'.
Says Jatin, "Often, people are surprised when they learn that I've sung in films. I like singing as much as I love to compose music."
Tellywood actress Chavvi Mittal will be partnering Jatin.
The combination of a beautiful actress and a melodious composer indeed make for a perfect pairing. However, only time will tell whether they'll rake in our perfect junta's votes.

When Apara was Penaz's rival |
Friday, October 26, 2007 04:12 [IST] |
"Sing and the world swings with you," enthuses TV actor Apara Mehta who originally wanted to be a gaayika. "It's a dream come true that director Vipul D Shah has chosen me and paired me with singer Parthiv Gohil (of 'Saawariya' fame) as a contestant in 'Jjhoom India' (Sahara One)," she says. Apara continues, "I would regularly win prizes for singing at the inter-collegiate level with ghazal singer Penaz Masani being my arch-rival. In fact, I was learning classical music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafasaab," she reveals. But wasn't 'Jjhoom India' meant strictly for non-singers? "Unfortunately, for the past 20 years, I haven't had the opportunity to sing. It's been only theatre and TV serials. My singing talent had gathered dust. With rigorous rehearsals with my young sureela-joshila partner, I am getting back into the groove," explains Apara. Was it true that she had initial problems singing duets? "My voice is not what it used to be. Yes, vocal scale for duets was always a problem with me, as I have a heavy, husky awaaz. Parthiv raises or lowers his pitch to match my singing," laughs Apara who gangs up with Shama Sikander, Vinod Rathod and Akriti Kakar in the show. Meanwhile, judge and veteran composer Anandji (of Kalyandji-Anandji fame) known for his witty repartees quips, "Kyunki Apara bhi kabhi singer thi," adding, "Lekin woh ab dobara jhoom uthegi." Film personalities Mahesh Bhatt and Shabana Azmi will also be judges in the show, which goes on air on October 27. Source : DNAIndia http://movies.indiainfo.com/2007/10/26/0710260418_apara1.htm l |
In a new role | ||
Chaya Unnikrishnan When you had your own production company 7.30 Entertainment, what was the need to enter into a joint venture with UTV? Two is always better than one. UTV is a big name and far more experienced than our company in film production and distribution. We need that kind of support right now which is why we have set up Windmills Entertainment as a joint venture. We have a deal for 2-3 years and we will see how we go and grow. It is a 50:50 partnership and we will be concentrating on film and television content. What kind of shows will you be producing? We are looking at producing fiction, non-fiction and reality shows. Karuna Samtani is the creative head. We are in talks with various channels including STAR Plus, Sahara One and 9X. We are also having a film Dhaan and a couple of interesting projects which I can't talk about right now. Tell us what Dhaan is about? Dhaan is about this detective who is investigating cases of farmers committing suicide. He meets this farmer who commits suicide in front of him which jolts him. Another incident happens which puts him on the path of self-realisation and work for humanity. You are part of Sahara One's new show Jjhoom India? What prompted you to be a part of the contest? I am a singer now and it gives me the right platform to showcase my talent. I had a choice between taking up Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and Jjhoom India. Recently I have cut my own album and so being a singer is what interests me now. I will probably do Jhalak ... next year. Also Jjhoom ... has a good team of singers and actors. There's Suresh Wadkar who sang my first song in Utsav, the three judges Mahesh Bhatt, Shabana Azmi and Anandjibhai and my partner Sanjeevani Belande who's been around for a long time. What's more in the 15 days that I have been rehearsing and shooting for the show I have found that I have gone five ladders up! Now that Laughter Challenge is over, will we see you in any other comedy show? No, I want to move away from comedy. I am a serious actor but since I have done comedy, people are associating me with humour. After a point, one gets a little sick and tired of the tag. I enjoy doing intense roles far more than comedy. There are a couple of big shows in the pipeline but I can't talk about them because they are in the nascent stage. However, there's another film One Fine Monday in which I play a Don who tries his best to change when his dying father extracts a promise that he mend his ways. The film directed by Manu Chhoube who's written around 500 episodes of Balaji serials is directing it. In two weeks the film will be complete and ready for release. It has an ensemble cast comprising Raj Zutshi and Gauri Karnik among others. We read you are playing your son Adhyayan's brother in one of the forthcoming films? Yes. I have played his father for so long, let's see how it is playing his brother (laughs). It will be an exciting and new experience. How would you assess your son as an actor? He is making his debut in Halle Dil opposite Kumar Mangat's daughter and the film releases next February. Adhyayan is a heavy duty star material. He did an acting course in one of the top schools Millfield from UK and completed his A levels in theatre and direction from New York Film Academy. He's getting huge offers and is on the brink of an exciting career.

Anandji ready to Jjhoom
Anandji who has made superstars Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Mala Sinha sing to his tunes was piqued when he was approached to judge a singing contest Jjhoom India that has a TV actor paired with a professional singer. " Some of these singers have learnt from me so it would be a test for them too, " smiles the veteran composer. Singers are trying hard to teach their partners the technique of breathing while crooning on the mike. "These days it's not enough to be good in sur or tal, one has to have a good technical knowledge," informs Anandji whose troupe performs a lot of stage shows. The composer is the only judge connected to music on the show. The others comprise Mahesh Bhatt and Shabana Azmi. Won't there be a lot of differences between them? "Shabana will look for diction and performance, Mahesh will observe the body language and I will concentrate on sur and tal," informs Anandji adding that differences are bound to be there but "it will be for the betterment of the show".
