Kumar Sanu is Beyond them....

Dear Friends,

One singer who's songs I have sort of grown up on during my school/college days (now please dont try guessing my age) has been Kumar Sanu. Initially when Sanu entered the industry he was seen as a Kishore Ape but made a good living out of it since he did many re-recorded versions of Kishor da. Then slowly he began carving his own identity and was like a Hit Machine (Comparable only to HR's success since his songs were hit one after the other). The movie that turned his life was 'Aashiqui' (which is the biggest album in India to date) and then he went on to become a great singer with 5 Filmfare's in a row, 28 songs recorded in a day and many accolades followed. Sanu & Udit ruled the music scene but Sanu always did better commercially & with the awards (like Martina Navratilova & Chris Evert).

However I find that in all the music shows/reality shows I have seen, all singers sing either Sonu songs, Udit songs, Sukhwinder Songs, Kishore songs, Rafi songs, Shaan songs, Manna Dey songs. Even moderately successful singers like Kailash Kher, James, Aatif etc find a place in these shows. But I have not seen any singer attempt a Kumar Sanu song over the years. There may be a rare sanu song here or ther but nothing substantial like a sanu special.

His songs are some great melodious classics and I wonder why they dont sing his songs, is because he had a lot of harkat and vibrato in his songs and they find it difficult to attempt. I just dont think that this could be the reason but I wonder why we are deprived of some great Sanu numbers in these contests. Would like to know your views as to why Sanu songs are never attempted.

Some of his great songs which I would like to hear on SRGMP or Idol or VOI or any damn show are -

1) Tere dar par sanam chale aaye // Badlon mein chup raha hai chand kyon(Phir teri kahani yaad aayi)

2) Dheere Dheere se meri zindagi main aana // Ab tere bin jeelenge hum // Zaane Jigar Jaane Man // Nazar Ke saamne jigar ke paas(Aashiqui)

3) Sochenge tumhe pyaar kare ke nahin // Payali (Deewana)

4) Sambhala Hai maine bahut apne dil ko (Naraaz)

5) Humko sirf tumse pyaar hai (Barsaat)

Also All songs from Saajan, Pardes (Meri Mehbooba, Do dil), Baazigar. Are there any others which you can think of ??

Also which singer do you think will do justice to these great melodies. I am tempted to say Aneek but I think Amit Paul or Harpreet. Also the only Sanu songs which I think have been sung are - Kuch Na Kaho (1942) and Tum Mile Dil Khile (Criminal), cant think of any other.

Thanks. Kumar Sanu has an unbelievable voice a bit husky and sexy at times and really beautiful and smooth. Not so easy to copy I think but some of the SRGMP singers could give it a try. Perhaps Sonu Nigam can sing it. 😆

Summer, Sonu is a great singer himself. It would be better if we stick to the C2005 & 2007 singers. I think Sanu songs are great but dont know which singer would make them sound as good as they are.

Reemji, Then I would suggest Vinit give it a try. He too is very good.

I am just listening to the aashiqui songs, yaar what songs ! I am sure there will many on this forum who would not have heard those songs since they are nearly 20 years old. I can listen to them anyday anytime.

Thanks for your views. I have many Kumar Sanu songs that are my favs., esp. from 1942 Love Story. I donot really know why his songs are not sung on reality shows. Perhaps he is not so popular now.

I dont know if this is the reason. Since there are many singers who are not living anymore or not popular anymore yet their songs find a place on these shows (someone like Shailendra singh). One more reason was that most Kumar Sanu songs are for T-Series and there could be some copyright however this is also not the case many T-series numbers are sung on shows. However in the late 80's and early 90's there was no one as good as Sanu and so its unfortunate that the younger gen is deprived of some great songs. Another one i thought of is - Mera Dil bhi ktna pagal hai (Saajan).

Himesh too is an average singer but great MD. Even his songs like Jhalak dikhlaja, Aashiq Banaya, Rafta Rafta, are often sung on shows. Just last week Toshi was singing Tadap Tadap from Darling. So when Average singers and decently good songs find a place, why dont the great songs which are some of the biggest hits cant find a place in these performances.
