Hi!😃
Everything will start to make sense from here I guess. Let's see each other once more at the ending!
The darkness pressed her eyes, robbing her of any sense she had about direction.
Who are you?' She asked as she got up to her feet once more. There was a long pause and the answer came from a far away.
You'd do better not knowing.'
The lights flickered to life, making her aware of her surroundings. It was a vast hall, that had many doors leading from it, the roof had a plan glass tile a few feet ahead, which cast a mild night light inside. Somewhere ahead a door slammed shut.
Where are you?'
Isn't that a question you should be asking yourself?' He sounded amused, slightly mocking. Swara raised her eyebrows. She saw the mirror that concealed the entrance a few feet away and walked to it. Running her hand along the line where it joined the wall, she tried to find an opening.
You can't open it.' The voice came; sarcasm dripping from it now.
Let me go,' she ordered then.
No reply came this time. She raised her voice tried a few different threats yet made no progress. Finally tired with her efforts she sat on the cold ground, leaning against the wall and wrapped her arms around herself. She was cold, she was sleepy. But she was too scared to give in. The silence was heavy, she almost wondered if she had imagined the voice and its replies. It seemed so lonely here. Sleep was taking a toll on her as her eyelids began to drop. She tried to keep them wide open a few times, stared in to the empty space not really seeing anything before finally dozing off, unintentionally.
It had been hours after she had been lolled in to a deep slumber the footsteps approached again. The lights went out, leaving the dawn light that filtered through the plan glass tile, the only source of light.
I had always pictured this moment differently,' he muttered slowly kneeling beside her, staring in to her sleeping face hungrily. Much less complicated.'
Smoothly his long fingers ticked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his fingertips lingering on her cheeks a moment too long, she stirred a bit, but did not wake up.
You took your time coming back,' he said slowly. It's too late now, too far, too wrong. Why did you come back?'
He watched her for another moment.
You can't return. No.' He said to himself then. Take a grip of yourself Sanskar. She's not yours.'
*
As usual his door opened without warning; a stream of sunlight blinded him for a moment. Sanskar looked up in to the glittering bottomless eyes of Annapurna.
Yes?' He said in a casual tone as she gazed in to the hall over his shoulder. He was sitting on a sofa, dragged next to the window he had broken recently with a heavy volume of some book in his hand.
Where is she?'
Sanskar arranged his features in to pleasant surprise.
I am supposed to have a visitor?'
Where is she?'
With a snap he shut the book in his hands, placed it on the sofa and stood up, stretching himself to his full height and sighing.
You seem quite forgetful in your old age Ma, I don't exist remember?' His tone was cheerful but with a dose of hidden menace inside. Funny, I was starting to enjoy this isolation when you showed up and spoiled my entire mood.'
Where is she?'
Sanskar reached her and grabbed the edge of the door, his eyes glittered in a manner similar to Annapurna.
Lost her have you?'
Where is she?'
She must be somewhere inside your gold cage. Go find her.' He said shaking the door making her grasp around the knob slip away. With one meaningful glance thrown at her pale face and a slight curl in the corner of his mouth he shut the door, leaving Annapurna to ponder over the secrets even her husband was not aware of.
*
Walk with me Annapurna,' Durga Prasad said in a measured tone. He was strolling in the garden, away from the peering eyes and ears and waited a moment for her to join him before resuming his pace. Annapurna looked disturbed, slightly scared, she bit her trembling lip once or twice, casted a fearful glance at her husband and twirled her fingers. Comparing with her tousled nerves, Durga Prasad looked composed and cold.
Two days,' he continued after a few steps. I had left the reins for you for only two days and you made all this mess?'
Ji I...'
If something happened to that girl, what answer will we give to her mother?'
But I...'
I agree, something should be done. But not this way, certainly not. We should not be a part of whatever happens, like always.'
I was worried for Lakshya.'
Durga Prasad did not answer her for a moment, they took a few more steps in silence before he stopped once more.
Explain me something Annapurna,' he said then, even his impassive tone laced with curiosity. Why did Sanskar help the girl?'
I...I don't know.'
Durga Prasad raised an eyebrow.
Why do I feel you know something about her that I don't?'
I have no secrets Ji,' Annapurna said in an honest tone.
But your son does, right?'
She said nothing.
It better not be what I think,' said Durga Prasad. For I was actually thinking of letting her escape... If she is what I assume, the moment she slips from our hold Sanskar's chains will break as well.'
Still she did not reply.
You were the one to bind him Annapurna, I've never questioned that move of yours, for I made a mistake when I acted then and you have bolted in the storm I've unleashed. Protected my fortress for which I respect you. But now I ask you and demand your answer. Is she the one I think she is?'
*
Don't go,' Swara said in a small tone, looking at Lakshya with pleading eyes. You said you will help me, stay with me, then why?
Come on Swara,' he said a little firmly. I know what I said. But this deal is important and this is the first time Papa handed me some responsibility. I can't deny going!'
Even after what I told you?'
Lakshya raised his eyebrows.
Are you asking me to believe there was an intruder in your room last night? That this mirror opens in to a secret path? You want me to believe someone inside my house wants to kill you?'
It is true!'
Then explain, explain how you ended up fast asleep and completely unscathed on your bed this morning?'
Do you think I dreamed this up?' Swara asked starting to feel annoyed.
Won't be the first time,' Lakshya muttered.
What do you mean Lakshya? When have I been imagining things?'
Lakshya threw his hands in the air, sighing in defeat.
You know what, honestly I think this whole phoenix idea is also your imagination and everything that you said happened with him or you...'
The memory of his sarcastic accusation swept her mind's eye as she stared at the temple now glittering in the morning sun light. It was the same place, where she had acquired the bitterest memory of her life. Recalling the night and the events of disturbing nature Swara watched the flags of the temple wave lazily in the morning air.
Only you and I know the truth Kavi,' she muttered to herself. That whatever I said was true. You lost your life only, but I...I lost my reason to live. You should have let me go that day; I should have been the one to die.'
The wind, fragranced with the doop offered at the temple whipped against her face.
People are questioning my sanity now,' she continued in a low voice. How am I going to prove them you didn't disappear but was murdered? How can I explain that phoenix exists outside my imagination? I don't know what they did with him, perhaps they killed him like you, or perhaps he is trapped somewhere, imprisoned so that they can prove I made this whole thing up.
Tell me Kavi, what am I going to do?'
Too engrossed in her thoughts she dropped her phone accidently. Kneeling on the sacred ground to pick it up, she looked up at the glittering temple once more. The sunshine dazzled on her phone screen as well as she glanced at it unintentionally. Something caught her eye. Someone was watching her, lurking in the sidelines, behind her.
She was being tracked by either a friend or an enemy. Either way she knew it was not going to end well.

Oh...you reached the end.
