Part Five
He'd done it, he'd admitted his feelings for Zoya. It was funny, the surge of relief he experienced at saying it aloud. He'd watched her work on a child in the ER shortly after they'd started dating two years ago. She'd been completely devoted to that little boy, protecting him when his father had wanted to take him home before he was released, even though the man was twice her size. The sight had twisted Asad's heart in ways he couldn't explain.
Being with her again, even for just this short time, had reinforced the emotions he'd thought he'd buried. He wanted to start over with her.
Only he didn't figure his chances were very good. She still stared at him as if she needed to scrape him off the bottom of her shoe.
He sighed. Besides, for professional reasons, he'd have to reign in his attraction for her until he had her cousin behind bars. And once that happened, she might hate him.
"Is Adil staying here?" he asked her before she could respond to his emotional admission.
"Yes." She frowned. "Which is really odd. He never wants to stay at the trailer. He says he gets claustrophobic trying to find a place to sleep where he won't step on anyone on his way to the bathroom."
"He's cementing his cover."
"Or he just wants to spend extra time with his family," she retorted.
Asad sighed his frustration at her continued defense of the man, but he couldn't blame her. He even admired her loyalty. He just couldn't let it prevent him from doing his job. "I'll stay in my car tonight."
She frowned. "Why? Mom expected you to stay. She set up a cot for you in the bedroom with the guys."
"Where's Adil sleeping?"
"In the den on the couch, I think."
"And his car is parked right outside that door. I'll be keeping an eye on his vehicle to make sure he doesn't decide to take off during the night."
"He won't"" She bit her lip. "Fine. I'll see you in the morning."
"Zoya"" he gripped her fingers and sighed at the wary question on her face. "I wish..."
"What?" she whispered.
"Nothing. We'll figure this case out and then talk."
She slipped from the car and turned back. "Just so you know, I wish, too."
***
Zoya tossed on the rollaway bed and glanced at the clock on her phone. Two in the morning and she was no closer to sleep than she had been when she'd laid down two hours ago.
She sat up, swung her legs over the side of the bed and slipped on her flip-flops. She'd worn her favorite black knit shorts and black tank top to sleep. Careful not to make any noise or bump into the other two beds, she made her way out of the room and into the hall. As she moved into the den, the snick of the back door closing caught her attention.
Who was up at this hour? Her sister with Arhaan?
She slipped to the window and saw Adil's tall, lanky frame in the halo of the porch light. Shoulders hunched, he moved at a quick pace across the lawn.
Her breath caught as she hurried out the door to follow him. Part of her wanted to tell Asad, another part of her wanted to find out what Adil was doing first. He could simply be meeting friends.
She darted from tree to tree, but didn't know why she bothered. Adil was moving fast and not looking back. Three trailers down, he moved up through the yard and disappeared.
Zoya quickened her pace, got him in her sights again. He carried a large bag that bumped against his hip as he walked. He was headed for a large utility van that was parked at the top of the hill. She bent over and crept closer.
As she reached the side of the vehicle, she froze when the wail of a baby reached her ears.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Asad jerked at the baby's cry. He had the windows down in the car to help combat the heat. And so he would hear if Adil crawled in his car and cranked it.
A quick glance showed Adil's vehicle still there.
So where was the baby?
By the cry, he was definitely outside. Had Aliya stepped out of the trailer with him so he wouldn't wake the others? But the cries weren't coming from the back of the trailer, they were coming from up ahead.
One last wail and then silence.
Ears tuned, Asad checked his phone. Nothing. And no more crying. He noticed a van driving off into the distance.
He shifted, uneasiness biting at him. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but his gut said something wasn't right.
He climbed from his car and approached the door to the trailer, hesitant to wake anyone but needing to address his concern. He lifted his fist to knock.
A scream made him freeze.
"My baby! Where's my Arhaan?"
Asad bolted through the door.
Confusion reigned. Zoya's sister, Aliya, was wringing her hands and pacing from one end of the room to the other.
Asad asked, "What's going on?"
"Arhaan's missing," Zoya's mother said.
"So's Zoya," added her sister. "Would she have taken Arhaan outside so he wouldn't wake everyone up?" She appeared to calm at the thought.
"Where's Adil?" Asad asked, pointing to the rumpled blankets on the couch.
They looked at him like he was crazy, but they didn't know the things he did.
Asad remembered the crying baby outside and spun back through the door into the darkness, the sinking in his gut telling him he was too late.
***
Zya huddled under a blanket in the back of the utility van, struggling to control her panicked breathing.
When Arhaan had started to cry, another man had climbed from the van. "Shut the kid up, you moron," he'd hissed. "You trying to wake the neighborhood?"
Adil had fumbled in the baby bag and pulled out a bottle. During the distraction, Zoyahad climbed in the rear of the van, realizing with heartbreaking clarity that Asad had been right about Adil.
But her only thought now was to save Arhaan. And herself. She wished she had her cell phone with her, but she hadn't exactly planned on a midnight flight. Her phone lay under her bed.
Zoya did her best to keep her breathing even and her fear under control as the van clicked along the back roads. The two men rode in silence, and even Arhaan appeared to have gone to sleep again.
"What happened to Akram?"
"He's dead."
"I know that, you idiot. What happened?"
"He came to the trailer, said he had to make sure I understood that the delivery had to take place. I told him there'd been a change of plans, and he freaked. Asked me if I knew how much money was riding on this transaction. Of course I knew," Adil snapped. "Then he pulled that knife out and started waving it around, shoving it in my face. I got angry and kicked him. He came at me and we fought. He fell on the knife and that was it. I panicked and got out of there. What was he doing, anyway?"
"Quraishi told Akram the couple was willing to add fifty grand if they could take possession by tomorrow morning."
Adil groaned and Zoya thought she might be sick. Buying and selling babies. How could he? His own cousin? And he'd killed a man? Or at least been responsible for the man's death, even if it had been an accident.
But Adil's participation in this kidnapping was no accident.
Aliya must be frantic. Surely by now she'd awakened to feed Arhaan and realized he was missing. Which meant the authorities had to be looking for him.
Which meant she had to get word to them somehow.
Heart in her throat, she lay still, knowing nothing could be done until the van came to a stop.
She could tell when they finally hit the highway as the wheels began to spin in a smooth rhythm.
Please, Allah, send help.
