So the hugely anticipated marriage happened today! I'll not be commenting on the various bloopers (and boy were there many!) or the annoyances caused by trying to merge so many things in such a poorly edited way as others have done it far better and with more humour than I can muster just now 😊. However, I saw some comments about the verses from the Bhagavad Gita used and thought about the significance of this in the context of the wedding. Unusual to see this verse from Chapter 4, verses 7-8 from the Gita in a wedding, my favourite verses of all time. However, we usually get the standard "Mangalam Bhagwan Vishnu..." chant and also here I have noticed (in the sindoor episode) they used some beautiful chants- I tried to find them but struggled. Was sure it was a Laxmi-Narayan jaap of some sort but cannot document it!
So the wording and meaning of what we heard today, which many will know is of course:
"Yada yada hi dharmasya glanirbhavati bharata
Abhythanamadharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham
Paritranaya sadhunang vinashay cha dushkritam
Dharmasangsthapanarthay sambhabami yuge yuge" translated as (there are many variations but one I really like),
"Whenever there is decline in righteousness, O Bharata (or son of),
And there is exaltation of unrighteousness, then I Myself come forth;
For the protection of the good, for the destruction of evil-doers,
For the sake of firmly establishing righteousness, I manifest myself in every age."
My entirely subjective interpretation and I have no idea if the CVs thought it like this (others may disagree too) was that this was the proclamation of good winning over evil. The words in the Gita were famously spoken by Shri Krishna to Arjuna, they were the turning point of the entirety of the Mahabharata war. Krishna finally revealed himself to Arjuna, who was giving up on the battlefield and to allay his doubts and fears, Krishna gave him Gita "gyaan". This chapter and verse were fundamental.
Here, I feel there was a symbolism- Swara being Arjuna who has fought for her aims and has stood strong, Sanksaar having been her "sarathi", charioteer- like Krishna was to Arjuna- he literally drove Arjuna's chariot and despite the hard and almost unbearable decisions Arjuna had to make and face in the war, he was assured by Krishna that it was necessary for good and to defeat evil and due to this God himself stood with him.
Please don't think I am literally comparing- I know Sanskaar is far from godly! But what I am saying is he is both a medium and a guide for Swara in her journey. She is able to fight a war because of him and she will not be defeated as he stands by her. The playing of these verses was a reminder that God stands with them as in the show they are on the side of right and whatever is happening is God's will. Hence, God has manifested his power by putting them in a situation, which however hard it seems, is what they really need to do- hence showing the inevitability of their union.
