Hello everybody. I have a doubt whether Karna is considered as Suta or only called by Sutaputra.
In those period of time jaat / caste word is not used. Only Varn is used to describe brahmin, kshatriya, vaisy and sudra. Varn means profession. Let say at that time the children of intermixture varna is force to do certain type of job like Suta means Charioteer and Sairandari means hair caretaker of queen etc.
Now the question is how Karna is Suta if he became a king and warrior. He automatically become kshatriya. Even Karn's brother participate in MB war as a soldier and went to Kripacharya training as per kmg.

Hi,
I think of what little I read on Karna in Mahabharat. He is addressed as Son of Suta and not really Suta. Now though people were known from work they did and he was a king but his lineage was considered in some occasions where it mattered .For example marriage was at that time such case where caste mattered and even choosing occupation was chosen by caste. That is reason karna faces snide remarks and opposition when he chooses to be Archer.. A warrior.

Ya ...Just like in today's time also, when the matter of marriage come, all want to know what his lineage is, what his father's doing etc etc.
I don't think there is a problem in choosing occupation because Karna's brother also choose to be soldier and eklavya of nishad caste also. Problem comes when person of low caste lineage become great warrior equal to king.

Keep in mind that Sutas were not shudras - they were considered a sub-caste of kshatriyas. Lower, maybe, but kshatriyas nonetheless.

Hindu caste system or Varna pratha was divided into 4 casts
1.brahmin..those ppl who were became prist,teacher,doctor...in some cases Brahmins also became king..they were considered as supreme class...all the rules and regulation were made by them.they were highly equiped with the knowledge of Vedas ,sastras ,scriptures ,politics and economics and warefare...but they were not as good as khshatriya on warfare except few

2.khastriya:-those ppl who were the ruler of the society...they became kings, landlords, worriers etc.they were well equiped with astra vidya...and having lesser knowledge on Vedas, sastras, scripture, politics ,economics etc (except few)

3.baishya (business class):-basically Business men were belongs to this class..economically they were a strong piller of society so brahmin and khastriyas maintained a good rapport with them..but they got the knowledge of business only...few no of baishya knew little bit of warfare also.but it only depends on them.

4.shudra (service class):-rest of the three classes all the ppl were considered as shudra..a farmer,a fisherman,a charioteer ,a hunter,a slave etc etc...they were the largest caste of the society..they had no right to get any knowledge on sastras,Vedas, scriptures, politics ,economics etc...they could get warefare but it was only to support their own job ..very few who belongs to some royal linage can get the education like higher castes ppl...but yes rules sometimes varied from one kingdom to another..it depends on the mentality of the king and his family of that particular kingdom.
Now comes to suta...they originated by the mixture of Brahmin and khasatriya..but they belongs to shudra only...as they went to war with the worriers so they had permission to get knowledge of warfare...but not as much as the khsatriya..they had no permission to become a worrier..

Now come to the biggest q why many of the kings and khastriyas were so much angry on karna...and always tried to redicule him or insult him...he went to lord parasuram who only taught Brahmins..so he had knowledge of everything..vedas,sastras,scriptures,politics,economics,astrology etc etc along with warefare...karna was an man who had immance thrust of knowledge..and as a student he was verystudious .hardworking and brilliant..so he not only acquired the knowledge of warfare but also on Vedas, scriptures, sastras, economics, politics etc .plus he was a khastriya by birth so he had immance physical strength also..so combination of that two made him an excellent educated person
...even in dawpar yug there were very few men who were so much educated in whole aryavat except lord Krishna and few of others...lord Krishna mentioned him as an extremely knowlagable person in udyog parv..and his knowledge was irked by the khastriya...as a king he always maintain good rapport with Brahmins ..but never care for khastriyas except those who were his friends...he was extremely liberal towards other two classes ppl also...so a person who belongs a lower class having too much knowledge and so strong worrier with his do not care attitude towards khastriyas made him not so popular among khastriyas...but still as he was loved by other three class ppl and be friend with many khastriyas so he was considered as one of the most generous and noble king of aryavat..

A suta is a problem case because as per the rules prevalent then suta children are those who are born to Kshatriya father and Brahman mother. Karna's foster father Adirath was a suta (adirath's father was a Kshatriya and mother a Brahman). The problem was because Kshatriyas were considered a lower category than Brahman, it was considered bad then to marry outside caste, and it was worse if the girl belonged to an upper caste than boy.
Since Karna's father is a suta, he was called sutaputra or son of suta. Suta's were respected a lot but their primary career options were charioteer, minister in the court, reciting Puranas and histories, battle stories during religious gatherings etc. keechaka the senapati of virata was also a suta. So suta were also allowed to train and be warriors. Sanjaya was a suta. Vyasa's disciples who narrated Mahabharata after him were sutas

There were only three occasions when Karna caste was a problem.

1. Dronacharya refused to give him brahmastra saying as per rules this Astra is to be given only to a Brahman (as it is brahmastra) or a highly deserving Kshatriya (so only Arjuna and ashwatthama were given not even Duryodhan or Bheem)

2 marriage - in SV because like I said if a girl married below her caste it would cause problem for the children

3. Challenge to Arjuna in Rangabhoomi. It was not a battlefield (in a battlefield it's open war for everyone, caste doesn't matter there) it was a sports arena, where only people who are equal in all respects allowed to challenge each other, (therefore mace fight between Bheem and Duryodhan and not Yudhi and Duryodhan)

Otherwise Karna was never disrespected for his caste anywhere else. Suta is not same as shudra. In fact much higher category than shudra. It comes above vaishya

Btw Yudhishtir inspite of being a Kshatriya learned all the Vedas and hence was known as dharmaraj.

Dronacharya refusing Karna and Draupadi refusing Karna are considered as misconceptions because they are not part of several versions ( in southern India version Karna aimed but failed, in BORI critical edition Karna never participated in Svayamvar)
Similarly in several versions, Karna was never a student of drona. In fact he met everyone for the first time in Rangabhoomi, where he was asked to introduce himself because no one knew who he was

But even if they were true, in those days the guru had the right to decide what knowledge he will impart to his students. Similarly a woman had a right to decide who she will marry in her swayamvar (karna was not invited, he came with Duryodhan who was invited - this is specifically mentioned in all versions) Similarly Arjun had a right to refuse Karna 's challenge (here it was family sports day event not open to general public, hence here to Karna came uninvited)

"Seeing him, Karna left his bow and impelled by filial regard bowed down his head still wet with the water of inauguration. And them the charioteer, hurriedly covering his feet with the end of his sheet, addressed Karna crowned with success as his son. And the charioteer embraced Karna and from excess of affection bedewed his head with tears, that head still wet with the water sprinkled over it on account of the coronation as king of Anga. Seeing the charioteer, the Pandava Bhimasena took Karna for a charioteer's son, and said by way of ridicule, 'O son of a charioteer, thou dost not deserve death in fight at the hands of Partha. As befits thy race take thou anon the whip. And, O worst of mortals, surely thou art not worthy to sway the kingdom of Anga, even as a dog doth not deserve the butter placed before the sacrificial fire.' Karna, thus addressed, with slightly quivering lips fetched a deep sigh, looked at the God of the day in the skies. And even as a mad elephant riseth from an assemblage of lotuses, the mighty Duryodhana rose in wrath from among his brothers, and addressed that performer of dreadful deeds, Bhimasena, present there, 'O Vrikodara, it behoveth thee not to speak such words. Might is the cardinal virtue of a Kshatriya, and even a Kshatriya of inferior birth deserveth to be fought with. The lineage of heroes, like the sources of a lordly river, is ever unknown. The fire that covereth the whole world riseth from the waters. The thunder that slayeth the Danavas was made of a bone of (a mortal named) Dadhichi. The illustrious deity Guha, who combines in his composition the portions of all the other deities is of a lineage unknown. Some call him the offspring of Agni; some, of Krittika, some, of Rudra, and some of Ganga. It hath been heard by us that persons born in the Kashatriya order have become Brahmanas. Viswamitra and others (born Kshatriyas) have obtained the eternal Brahma. The foremost of all wielders of weapons, the preceptor Drona hath been born in a waterpot and Kripa of the race of Gotama hath sprung from a clump of heath. Your own births, ye Pandava princes, are known to me. Can a she-deer bring forth a tiger (like Karna), of the splendour of the Sun, and endued with every auspicious mark, and born also with a natural mail and ear-rings? This prince among men deserveth the sovereignty of the world, not of Anga only, in consequence of the might of his arm and my swearing to obey him in everything. If there be anybody here to whom all that I have done unto Karna hath become intolerable, let him ascend his chariot and bend his bow with the help of his feet.'

- Refusing is one thing but insulting is another...I hope above citations can prove what insults karna had gone through even though invited he didn't deserve this ..in my view..
