Chapter 2:
Well, he had not imagined his words to affect her to such extent. He had to admit, he'd been a annoying boss to her, lecturing her, pushing her to always come up with the best. She made it a point that his words became the truth.
He was confounded by his own behavior he had laid bare before her. Inadvertently, he'd let his personal situations get mix up with his professional life.
It was justifiable of her to get angry and stay angry at him. The dead silence that ensued while on their way to the pre-decided destination proved it. Except the low humming of the engine, he found the silence unnerving, knowing the fact that the person besides him was always labelled as a quirky, feisty blabber mouth.
The moment they reached their destination, she was quick to get out without even glancing at him.
I suppose I'll have to formally apologize to her.
He sighed.
..
A rugged man of maintained physique walked towards them. " I called her yesterday. " He said pointing towards Ananya.
" You are Rajan, Dharam Singh's right hand." Kabir declared.
He simply nodded and continued.
"Vikram Kashyap is innocent. he was wrongfully framed. "
" We already know that. We need the name! " Ananya said impatiently.
In a husky voice, he continued.
"Dharam Singh."
"How?" kabir asked seriously. Anticipating matters regarding such influential corrupt people was a plain wastage of time and thoughts. You either succeed or die.
"You already know he is contesting for the upcoming elections. Like every time, there's a lot of money swindling and corruption. He makes us do all his dirty work while he appears as the clean politician to the masses. Once he is done with his work, he makes sure that the person who commits it does not see the day."
"Go on. "
"Dharam Singh, I want him to get caught."
"You have told us quite a story, Rajan. How can we trust you? What if it is ruse to frame us next?"
Kabir had conducted a thorough research on the person he was meeting with. In such convoluted scenarios, Certain precautions had to be decided upon. Their whole conversation was being recorded while police officers stayed alert at a distance in case of threatening situation.
"You have to believe me. Please! I want to live... " he got down on his knees, his face strained and apologetic.
Kabir turned towards Ananya.
Her eyes were fixed on that man, her face expressing overflowing a myriad of emotions.
" You have a family, don't you? " Ananya asked calmly.
He looked up. " Ye-Yes. "
She pulled kabir by the arm and whispered in his ear" I believe him, somehow. Call it an journalist's instinct. But I believe him. "
" So be it. "
" You are agreeing just like that? "
" Because I believe you. " he slightly smiled.
Kabir went towards Rajan. "Alright. We need to pull out the truth from Dharam Singh. Can you do it? "
"Ofcourse!"
"We'll meet again. Tomorrow. Same time. Same place."
Ananya just stood there, motionless. Inside her a hurricane of emotions rose, threatening to overcome her rationality, to bring her on her knees and cry her heart out.
These are the people, these vermins maligned her honest, proud father shattering his heart to death.Tears of helpless anger sprung from eyes like natural geysers as she hugged her own body to control herself.
At This very moment he felt he could comprehend how much wrong he was in judging her. The continuous stream of tears that adorned her morbid face made him realize how vulnerable she was. She was immature, naive and did believe her moral rights to be supreme than others but then, this side of her, he wished he'd never seen. Her condition made him confront his own inhibitions.
But then, He was resolved about one thing, he was going to stay by her side, no matter if she agrees or not.
"Let's go."
"Where to?"she asked between sobs.
"I think I might have some clues."
...
She eyed him suspiciously.
"You call them clues? Clues? " she said, pointing at the huge stack of papers before her.
Mesmerized she was, gazing at the huge shelfs in his study filled with an enormous volume of books, articles and clippings he had collected over years. He lives alone in this big house? she thought. Quite a stupid question she'd asked herself. But then, the feeling of her returning to normal was short-lived. She was quickly jumping from being highly emotional to getting overtly angry. This moment, 'Angry Miss Kashyap' was quick to take the controls of her mind, initiating an action she'd regret later.
"Didn't you hear me correctly? I had used 'might'." he smirked.
Ananya couldn't believe her ears. Instead of a heartfelt apology, he was behaving like an egoistic jerk. She wasn't rationally thinking since last night and her body language clearly expressed her anger and annoyance at being constantly pushed around in circles.
She took a step towards him. He took a step back.
He narrowed his eyes.
"You! I used to think you were an exceptional person. You were my inspiration! My idol!! "
"I blindly believed you! You make mistakes and why should I pay for it?"she said in a low, yet intimidating voice, moving closer to his face.
"Why?! Why should I believe you?"
She kept walking towards him, venting out her anger, until his back hit the wall. She had sufficiently pinned him to the wall, without even realizing it herself.
He couldn't fathom his own uneasiness. He'd always felt a mysterious sense of longing towards her. No, he wouldn't dare name these ardent feelings.
Her close proximity were unsettling his already befuddled thoughts.
His mind went point blank.
