I think before he got the job a psychological test wouldn't have revealed that the pilot would have killed a whole lot of passengers on purpose. He would have said all the right things at that stage, he worked too hard to get that position, and still he was only co-pilot not the captain, after fighting for so long, studying, working in menial positions burger king, as a flight attendant, imagine despite having trained as pilot he had to work as a flight attendant, before getting the opportunity as co-pilot.
Now he was facing his dream being snatched away from him, after waiting for so long, he started to lose his eyesight, that meant that would be the end of flying. He must have felt a lot of anger and out of frustration at the unfairness of this world he killed himself in this way and the passengers. That's possibly why he did it, but of course can we believe this story? If we think skeptically, we can see what's at risk from them revealing some terrorist group radicalised him, the aviation industry might be in trouble, people fearful of flying etc.
