You are absolutely right. His stardom and success is not owed to Rajni, and even after being his SIL, Dhanush was criticized and ridiculed a lot, thanks to his looks. But he groomed himself, changed his approach, he infact stopped doing commercial films for a period of 3-4 years, when he did several brilliant character roles, which worked in his favor. As he said that he had back to back flops , 4 flops in a row, and then Adukalam happened to him, which changed a lot of things for him.
Since Adukalam he is continuously winning a filmfare down south, every year, so you can imagine his acting prowess.
Even if you consider Raanjhna, the success is very much his own, kudos to the director ofcourse who chose Dhanush for the film, but Raanjhana is memorable for Dhanush, he could easily win the best actor trophy instead the best debut one.
