Emotions and Rationality

So how would you explain the decisions made by Gulkand and Payal?
Were they based on reasoning or on emotions?
One often thinks that one cannot mix the two when making a decision. If one is logical then there can be no place for emotions - the Mr. Spock of Star Trek is a perfect example.
More often than not however both reasoning and emotions are involved in decision making.
Let's take the case of Payal. Gulkand has exposed the Prasad's to her. Payal's better judgement tells her that even now it is not too late and that she should not go ahead with the wedding. Yet, when she hears about her father's retirement and his wish to see her married before he retires - she is so torn, that she weeps profusely.
She realizes she cannot take a decision based on her values. She has to take a decision that will shield her family from the derisive comments of society - a decision that will give them temporary happiness. She cannot refuse to marry and break their heart. So swayed by love for her family she will reason and decide to go ahead and marry Dev.
What she will never realize that they would prefer to live with a broken heart rather than see her as a broken bride.
Gul on the other hand is driven with the strong desire to prevent any woman from suffering the same fate as her. This desire is based on moral reasoning. But alas with time she has lost perspective and has made the issue personal. A personal emotional battle that is she waging with Ayyo , Bhaktin Billi and Natru.
The truth is humans by nature are emotional. Emotions prevent us from making long term rationale decisions - so well depicted by Gulkand and Payal. Both could not differentiate 'thought' from 'emotion' and have become victims of circumstances - thereby bringing chaos into their lives.

Great post. 👏

You have drawn some interesting similarities between Payal and Gulkand. The reasoning and morals are nicely contrasted with the emotional exigencies each one has. Of course Payal has a lot to lose. I wonder how it will affect Gulkand's view of Payal after she learns that Payal went through with the marriage without heeding her advice. Will she be condescending towards Payal thinking her to be a weakling? Will Gulkand keep nagging Payal on the lines of "I told you so..." Or will there actually be some camaraderie between them?

Also, I like this Bhaktin Billi name given by Gulkand to Santoshi. Santoshi is as fake as a cat doing puja!

BTW, which lock-up in Mumbai will let the prisoner go free in exchange of a family member?😆

So true...
Generally, people think that they are not emotional and can make proper judgement even in the case of a strong emotional turmoil. But it happens that they are rather driven by the emotions than rationale
while making decisions.Gul has defintely made this a personal issue but what she doesn't realise is,even being in the family for so long, she hasn' yet realised the truth about her husband.Initially, she used to teach him a lesson, but when he showed to support her for once, she believed him instantly.

Payal was also driven by emotions, knowing the truth, she should have backed off from the marriage but she decided to go for it.Well she thought more about her family rather than herself.I wonder how will her father feel when he comes to know the truth?

Superb and so so true👏

Gul as you rightly said...she has made it a personal issue. I feel she believes in the game of 'Gain and Lose' when it comes to Jog family...though she did help Payal but her noble thoughts were of mixed emotion (good nd bad)...punishing Jog to gain...a feeling of victory.

Payal is emotional and so the decision will be more on emotional level without thinking of what may happen once her family knows the truth.

The day Gul learns that Payal has gone ahead to be SWB...am sure Gul will roar... emotions doubled😆...one... Jog got what he wanted and second - inspite of warning Payal ..she went ahead...and so GUL will have an additional member in Her HATE list ...wonder what pet name she is going to give to payal😆

So true...loved your last para...

Payal's father revelation abt his retirement cornered Payal ...felt bad abt d situation she s facing now...Even in his heart-to -heart speech, he said tat he never comprised in his life 4 anything...If Payal admires her dad a lot...She should ve selected her dad's way of no compromises or supportive to wrong doings...But she went on with it.....
