THE LAST DANCE
Sanyukta was sitting in the library. She had just got to know about her father's involvement in the accident. And she was shattered. Her phone was switched off. Her eyes were brimming with tears. She was shocked and devastated. And regretful. Regretful that she had let him go again, when she had the chance of getting him back. Having a fresh start.
But she let it go.
Randhir.
She remembered her harsh words...
"Tumne mere papa ko almost maar daala aur main phir bhi tumhaare saath khadi hoon."
"Tum kabhi kisi se pyaar nahi kar sakte."
She only saw his temper. Not his selflessness. The selflessness which made him hide her father's involvement in the accident from her. Which made him help his friends before completing his own task.
She ignored the good and only saw the bad.
For a father who turned out to be such a terrible father.
The tears fell.
She didn't even notice when the librarian and other students left. Just sat at her place, wallowing in self pity and regret.
She was all alone now.
As she heard the shuffling of footsteps, she wiped her tears and looked back to see who had come.
It was HIM.
She immediately got up from her chair and starting walking towards the door.
But Randhir blocked her way.
They heard the sound of the door being locked by the peon.
She sighed. They were locked up in the library...again. It was like a ritual now. She went back to her chair and sat down, avoiding all eye contact with Randhir. She didn't know how to face him.
He just kept standing. Pin drop silence prevailed for the next few minutes.
"Here we are, locked up in here again. Just like old times," said Randhir, breaking the silence.
Sanyukta looked up at him. He looked serene and calm. There was no anger or sadness on his face.
She awkwardly nodded and looked down.
"Since we're stuck here the whole night, why don't we dance to pass time?" he asked her.
She was shocked. She had hurt him so much and instead of fighting, he wanted to dance?!
He held out his palm, smiled and asked her, "Could I please have one dance?" He was behaving like a true gentleman.
She stammered nervously, "But...but af-after all that happ-happened-"
"Let's forget the past and live the moment!" he interrupted her. "For now, at least."
She got up and held his hand. He took her to an empty spot in the library. He got out his phone and started playing a song. Her favourite song.
"Dehleez pe mere dil ki, jo rakhe hai tune kadam...
Tere naam pe, meri zindagi, likh di mere humdum
Haan seekha maine jeena jeena, kaise jeena
Haan seekha maine jeena mere humdum
Na seekha kabhi jeena jeena, kaise jeena
Na seekha jeena tere bina humdum..."
They swayed with the beat of the song. They danced like there was no tomorrow. They moved with the perfect rhythm.
Sanyukta was liking it...no, she was LOVING it!
But the song ended. And they gracefully finished their dance.
Charcoal black eyes met toffee brown eyes.
"Why did you want to dance? After everything that happened? Why?" she asked him.
He replied with a sad smile, "I dreamed of a whole life with you, Sanyukta. I wanted to patch up. But it didn't work out. It never does. Because both of us have messed up. We've hurt each other. We are too damaged to be fixed. I hoped you could understand me but you didn't."
Both of them had tears brimming in their eyes, threatening to fall out at any moment.
"We love each other, but...love is just not enough, is it?" he asked, his voice breaking.
"It isn't," Sanyukta whispered.
"Exactly. And I've accepted this. I've accepted that we can't be together. But today, just for a while, I wanted to forget everything and just be with you. Even if it was just for a few minutes," he said, tears falling from his eyes.
She started crying too.
He wiped her tears and kissed her forehead.
"Good bye Sanyukta. Take care of yourself," he whispered.
He walked away from her, to another part of the library. And she watched him leave.
She had lost a gem.
And she would never get him back. Even if she wanted to.
There are dreams which never come true.
Hopes and wishes which are never fulfilled.
And two souls made for each other, but not meant to be.
Sanyukta and Randhir, who could never become SanDhir.
