Yes, one of the best pairs in BV, Bhairon-Sumitra. Bhairon was well balanced guy.
He couldn't raise his voice against his mother but always silently supported Sumitra.
But same Bhairon opted for child marriage for his son and chose Anandi for Jagya ! with Bhairon-Sumitra-Dadisa, it looked quite believable.
Things are being shown OTT with Nandini.
How Nandini be so bold with Kundan and his parents when she is living constantly under fear and violence like a slave. Slaves aren't allowed to voice their opinion, right ?

Yes. He agreed for the child marriage. Maybe he thought as his own child marriage was successful. Maybe he thought he could not oppose his mother. His mother was his weakness. He appeared somewhat lame in many situations inspite of his good intentions. He seemed not to object even Sugna's bal vivah. And he saw the consequences too. Inspite of his failings, he is one of the most polished characters of BV. I used to watch many episodes of BV with some interest only because of Bhairon. He was charming and reasonable most of the time. Sanchi and Gauri insulted him and he took it in his stride. His mother was his biggest enemy followed by Basant.

Talking about male dominance and preference for male child and women taking pride in producing sons - Is it confined only to rural society?
We had an example in Ira who took pride in the fact that she gave Shiv to the world. The way she used to go and on being ladke wale isn't that a manifestation of male dominated society?

She used that as a leverage against Anandi right from the time Urmi Devi revealed the drama done by Dsa.

Ira is a balanced woman who when things were going great wouldn't express these kind of primintive sentiments but when in distress all these sentiments get expressed very freely and also the way she used to go on about how people like Anandi and Ganga trap men like J and Shiv

So the prejudice against women and the pride in giving birth to male child does cut across the cultures only thing in so called civilsed societies it gets manifested in a more subtle way.

The difference is , in rural societies even the daughters are not spared. And Ira gave Sanchi fullest freedom.Ira's problem was bahu problem more than gender discrimination. A mother who did not want her IAS son to marry a villager and a divorcee. She saw in both anandi and ganga some pattern.
And she gave precedence to her daughter over her son whch usually does not happen in the case of village mothers.
