This is something I've been thinking about for a while.

As well all know, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan hasn't done anything of importance (film-wise) in the last 5 years. Majority of his movies in these last 5 years have flopped at the box office. I feel that Amitabh Bachchan should have retired with Paa being his last film. The film was a Hit, and he won so much appreciation for his performance by many, including the Best Actor award at Filmfare that year. It was considered an outstanding performance by many.

Another reason why I feel Paa would've been the best way for Amitabh Bachchan to retire (with that being his last film) is because the film came right at the end of the decade (2000-2009). It would've been the ending of a legend to end a decade where he was still very relevant as he was in many successful films last decade. It would've felt like a new beginning for Bollywood from 2010 onwards, a feeling of a completely new era. Perhaps it could've been a huge motivation for the newer stars to try to match up to the level of superstardom of Big B, as that hunger to be the next Big B would've been there more amongst the newer stars if he retired.

They could've done the tributes for him at the award shows. I recall SRK/Abhishek Bachchan being on stage with him at one award show as Big B was the important star that year as he was receiving the Best Actor awards that year for Paa.

I know people have high expectations of Shamitabh, but I honestly don't know what to expect from it.

He has an interesting line up in 2015: Shamitabh, Piku and Wazir.

I don't think anyone should retire as long as they're getting work. Its amazing that he continues to be one of the biggest earners at this age and has keep himself in good shape. Motivation to keep working can stop you from being lazy regarding health. Big B could also get K3G kinda roles if not male lead. Hirani apparently wants him to play Sunil Dutt's role in his next.

I do agree bro with the point that one maybe shouldn't retire as long as they're getting work, but I feel as if these last 5 years have done nothing for him. He is making money, sure, but he could continue making money in other ways (KBC is an example) rather than films. I think the impact would've been even better on his iconic career if the audience remembered Paa as being his last film, rather than the Flop films he has been doing the last 5 years.

I don't think anyone plans to do flop films just like none probably expected Big B do films like Black, Cheeni Kum, Paa etc after his comeback. But he's playing important roles in all of the films and with critically acclaimed directors like Shoojit, Balki and Bejoy Nambiar. Maybe golden phase is about to begin again.

I think AB Sr. is way beyond hits and flops..he commands a certain respect. KBC has kept him going these last few years. He has good work w/ good directors lined up this year. Who knows, he may win again next year :)

I find his love for work and zest for learning new things even at this age pretty amazing.

A lot of people thought michael Jordan shouldve retired from the Chicago bulls in 1998 after he won his 6th NBA title in 8 years. They said that fadaway shot he hit against Utah was the perfect ending . But then he came and played 2 lousy years for the last place Wisards and ruined his legacy . Well michael said something interesting

" he can accept failure but he can't except not trying"

@chocolover89 no doubt that Big B is above hits and flops! But I still feel that Paa would've been the perfect way to cap off his legendary career as many loved him in the film, rather than the films he did after that many wouldn't even remember. Regarding his enthusiasm, I feel that the enthusiasm he used to show in his films before has been missing in these last 5 years. I remember thinking that he was not up to his usual mark in Satyagraha. The enthusiasm he usually shows in his films seems missing now, and I think age is probably the biggest factor for that!

@Franco bro how do you always think of something innovative to write for your every post 😆 Interesting comparison you made, but Big B is at a point where he doesn't even need to try anymore. He's had such a legendary career that he has nothing left to prove to anyone!

Just two years back, Big B postponed his movie with Rishi so that Rishi could give his dates to Abhishek's movie All Is Well. Now see.. Big B is going to play Ranbir's dad in Sanjay Dutt's biopic.

This buddha just keeps reinventing himself.

Big B is playing interesting and age appropriate roles. All his roles are mostly lead roles. What more does an actor need? I hope he continues acting as long as his health permits. He is an absolute delight onscreen.

I am in agreement with those who say as long as he gets work and is capable of doing work then he shouldn't retire. As for legacy, I think if he never gives another hit for the rest of his life he'll still leave an amazing legacy. Had he retired with Paa it would have been sentimental, but it wouldn't have made his legacy, his place in the hearts of his fans, and his prestige in Bollywwod any more meaningful than if he retires ten years from now.

He said in an interview years ago that after the bankruptcy he faced in the 80s or 90s or whenever that was, and having to go to Yash Chopra's house to beg for work, he developed a fear of not having work. He is afraid of facing those rough times again. So I think peace of mind is one of the reasons he does this and by all accounts seems to enjoy it very much.

As for younger stars having motivation I kind of go back to my first paragraph. He's already The Amitabh Bachchan. If an actor is not motivated now to be the next AB then him having retired 5 years ago wouldn't have made a difference. This one way of looking at it. Another way is that his work or job status is irrelevant as there will never be another Amitabh Bachchan, ever!!! There are others who are very successful now and are the number 1 or top 3 or whatever. But even if AB had been retired none of these people would have been another AB. That probably won't change for generations to come.
