Exclusive chat w/ Aditya Narayan-article

Aditya Narayan, son of legendary singer Udit Narayan, a child playback singer, who acted in a couple of movies and who, is currently the most popular prime time host on TV anchoring 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' on Zee TV. Our team caught up for an exclusive tte--tte with the singer, who is already a star and a heart throb of millions all across the globe.

How was it like to face the camera when you were a child?
I have loved the camera ever since I was a child. I used to pose with my parents during photo-ops. My mom used to apply make-up on my face and dress me up like a girl or dress me up like a weird boy and I used to be game for it. I think that in some way or the other I am destined to be in front of the camera. My first film was 'Pardes' with Subhash Ghaiji and even he thought I would be nervous. I was surprisingly very comfortable and that is why I was ready to take up more offers. I did get a couple of more good offers after that but, I had studies to complete but, yes my first experience was very nice.

You have done so many movies as a child artist, how was your childhood? Was it like any other child?
I won't say it was like any other child because then, I wouldn't have been singing and acting .People wouldn't have called me a child star which I was called. I think it has its own benefits and drawbacks. It gives you such a good experience at such a young age that everybody can't cope up with this and I am thankful to God that I had the capability to manage it. My parents were very supportive. I had a different perspective from all my other friends .People at 21 are still deciding what they want to do and I had a full-fledged career .Everyone loved me for it and I was working hard and I managed my studies pretty well. I was good at my studies till adolescence hit me and then, I had to put a break on my singing career.

How did you manage studies at that time? How were you as a student?
I managed pretty well and it was nicely balanced. And so I think I had no problems. My parents were happy with my marks then, I personally lost my interest in studies. You know how it happens when you are in your teens…(Giggles)

Do you mean you had girlfriends at that age?
Of course…do you know the world right now? My mom received a love letter from a guy when she was in fifth grade and she tore it and threw it on his face. Now the generations have changed and I think I had a girlfriend when I was 13.

Do you remember, who your first girlfriend was?
I am so sorry but, I don't remember about my first girlfriend but, yes I remember my first date very well. I had a girlfriend, who was very pretty. She was a very nice person. We went for a movie and then, we had dinner. It was all cheesy stuff. At that time, I was in "LOVE" and after that I fell in love lot more times. I fell in love with Britney Spears then, I realized what my perception of love was. Thankfully, I have grown out of it and I know what it is now.

Are you in touch with your old friends and ex-girlfriends?
Yeah, I am in touch with a couple of them, I think. Luckily, most of them are still my friends. It's hard to be in touch with them since lot of girls are pouring in my life….(Laughs).

How is Aditya as a person?
He has two sides. One side is fun-loving and the other is extremely boring. I am the 21st century of Udit Narayan because when he is fun, he is mad. When he is boring, God help!! We both make a very boring combination. When we watch TV together, we don't say a word, we don't talk at all. That is our way of communicating. My professional side is full of life, fun and hard work.

Any memorable moment from the show….
'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' has given me lots of memories in a short span of time . I was s*** scared on the first day. Obviously, it was my first job as an anchor. People like Sonuji and Shaanji have done it. And they are big names today. They have done such a fantastic job. The show is a legacy. It was lot of fun though. By the end of my first day I was ready to be the anchor of 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa'. I was all set..!!

Do you think you are deserving or lucky?
Deserving people needs to be lucky. Luck obviously is a big factor. There are thousands of talented singers in this world but, only a few are known. They need luck and positivism is the key. If someone says I can't do it, he can't do it but, I believe I can do anything. That belief is not over-confidence that's my belief in hard-work. It's just the matter of how hard are you willing to work and I am willing to work….real HARD. If I don't deserve what I get in the future I will make sure that I work hard and I deserve it.

Are you a spoilt brat or are you an obedient son of your parents?
If I would have been a spoilt brat, I would have been partying my a** of drinking and smoking. I would have been spending my dad's money. Instead, at this age , I have accomplished something and whoever thinks I am spoilt needs to see my work.

What made you decide to host? Was it your decision?
I don't consult anyone when it comes to decision. If my parents don't like the decision then, yes I discuss it with them because they have always been very supportive. They know if I believe I can do it….I will do it. 'Sa Re…' just happened by chance. They thought I suited the bill and they called my father and shared that they would like his son to host the show. I am above 18 then. Challenge needed a new host; they came up to me and they saw me all funky. I had a stronger accent then and they were worried whether I knew Hindi. I had to assure them that I knew Hindi. It was quite weird. It's related to music, biggest institution of music on TV; besides, so many big names. It has its heritage and prestige, one of the biggest platforms; I don't think I have anything, "No" to say to.

How is 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' different from other talent shows?
Its different because it is the original. 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' started off when there were no other musical reality shows on TV. It truly is an institution of music. It has every sort of music you can think of; the anchor Sonuji has become such a big name in such a short span of time and he made his career with 'Sa Re…'. Shaanji from 'Sa Re…'; there is so much good talent from 'Sa…' even we don't know, who participated in the show. Shekhar from Vishal-Shekhar was a contestant on the show, singers like Shreya and Kunal all have been contestants as well and have got their recognitions from 'Sa…'. People know it has to be good it has to be grand and there has to be good singers coming out of it. This time it's the world war of music because we have singers from all across the world. I think it is a very novel idea.

You being the host, I am sure you know of all the backstage drama.
What backstage drama? I have witnessed front stage drama. Obviously, genuine, everything is original. Yes, we have great judges, Ashaji wouldn't agree to any decision, like Vishal-Shekhar will prefer hip-hop songs, Himeshji will prefer melodious songs, dance numbers, he will have an ear for such kind of singers; Ismailj…classical and at that time it's difficult for them to choose one and so it comes to the public at the end of it. All we do is for the audience; whose records will you like to buy and whose CD will you like to listen to..

Have you lived up to the expectations of Shaan and Sonu?
I don't know whether I have lived upto the expectation. They are very big names. I never expected out of it because they hosted the show, they established their names and they are an inspiration to me. I listen to them and I learn from them; expecting from them would be very wrong. You should be expecting Aditya Narayan, I have got my own style and they had theirs. People have appreciated me. If u think I should work on something please let me know because that will make me better.

You have A strong female fan following. What is one quality that is the biggest turn-on for you?
I think honesty, little bit of intelligence or else I will look stupid. I wouldn't say I will not go for looks, she has to be pretty and presentable, someone who loves herself. She will definitely look beautiful but, she should not be obsessed about herself. I have seen girls are not happy with their nose or some other part of the body. I love people who are portray what they really are, a little bit of humor will be great, love eating food and watching movies…she has to accept me as I am. I can be boring as I said…

Any music tours in the pipeline?
Not too soon. It would be a better option when I come up with my album then, I can go on a world tour. May be within one year, I would be entertaining the audiences with my own music.

Do you have Big Screen plans?
Whenever I get a good script which I can't say, "No" to. As of now I am getting scripts which are not worth; no offense but, I have a personal choice. The person, who brings the script, should believe in it and I have to believe in it too. I would love to work hard; it has to be brilliant….

Is Aditya currently dating anyone?
No.

Any comments on Mauli Dave?
Mauli Dave…from Texas…three cheers to her!! It's a little sad as initially I could laugh it off with her but, you have some people with whom you share a better equation but, its really unfortunate that people link you up and then, they say….they don't look good together but, who's asking you? People comment, "He is really short." Well, for the ones, who don't know how tall I am, I m 5'9". Mauli and I are good friends. The topic is blown way out of proportion. It's wrong to assume something is happening. She is a contestant and she is working really hard like any other contestant. I don't mind, I m an anchor as for me fan following, link-ups make me a ladies man but, we should not dampen the contestants prospects of winning. We should concentrate on their strengths and weakness and not their personal life.

We are sorry but, it's hard to believe that you don't have a girlfriend.
You need to understand that I am working incredibly hard right now. My shoots go on for 16-17 hours a day and I working on myself. It takes up a lot of my time as well. It would be nice if you trust me that I am single. I really am. And if I had the time let me tell you that some of them are really cute and hot….
