The other popular shows are Jodha Akbar (hardly regressive saas bahu), Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (the m-i-l is a darling) and Pyar ka Dard . Before KKB came along - the top shows in Zee were Sapne Suhane Ladakpan ke and Qubool Hai - not exactly regressive pandering.

Even shows where saas bahu drama is at the forefront, the themes are not regressive. KKB is a fluke because there's nothing quite like Pragya on tv these days - I can't even remember the last Ekta show where the lead was such a doormat.

SNS is way more regressive than KKB. It has consistently higher TRPs than Jodha Akbar and KKB. Its completed 1000 episodes , is the slot topper. I do like watching it . But its basic theme is women should be good at housework , good cooks and do seva of their pati.
Prachi of Kayamat was quite a doormat. When DABH started out it was quite regressive but was ruling the no. 1 position. Only now with Sandhya pursuing her studies , becoming a qualified IPS and pursuing her job it is not regressive any more.

Hello Guys,

I have only just got back on the bandwagon of zee TV again as I left after Punar Vivah lost the plot now am back and it feels like I never left in the first place as it seems that the same storyline just new and different faces.
Firstly am highly disappointed that EK decided to base this after sense and sensibility I think she needs to take literature lessons again.. not trying to be rude more of a sarcasm and the fact that am appalled that she choose to promote her show on this basis.
sense and sensibility: women kept their morals but still had an opinion of their own to accept what is right and what is wrong. An example someone mentioned earlier when Marianne and family were accused they left the house immediately.
I live in the UK so I don't know what the norm and culture are in Indian I have never been but as someone who is interested in other people culture this show is not portraying a good imagination for people more like am scared for women as to how they are being treated to be honest.
Pragya I loved you when I started watching the show because she was the breadwinner of the family she was independent more of a 21st century lady I was very impressed apart from sandya she seems to be the next person to be in that line, but it seems that the show has degraded since then
EK's portrayal of love is what I call Bakwas, yes she is in love but does that means she needs to quietly take everything that is done to her, he goes around publicly flirting with Tanu and then he gets really upset about a video saying that it is going to ruin his career but the truth of the matter is Abhi is ruining his own career all by himself he does not need help for that.
I have seen Pragya get angry, he has humiliated her family and that is the sole purpose of her still being in the marriage for her family if not for herself she can at least be angry for them, how much more can they go through all in the name of seeing her happy in her marital life.
common we are all human if she says you don't have to apologise blah blah blah, the truth is he needed to get proof to confirm that she is innocent common Abhi is the man of the house he does not need anyone's permission to tell him how to run his marriage if he had said to people that he trusts his wife completely and does not need proof no one would have argued, but it is well said EK needs that TRP to be high so instead of a logical way to diffuse the situation why not make it last a month and then find the proof at the penultimate point which marriage.
Am not saying that she has to scream and yell and be OTT no I don't want that I at least know that Pragya is not that kind of character, but I would have preferred to have said something more constructive to let him know that she was upset and him getting the truth is not a favour on her as she never committed the crime in the first place.
But I knew deep down inside that she was never going to confront him or let him know that the way he treats her is not acceptable, instead she told him not to apologise and forgave him like he forgot to put (the toilet sit down again).
if not for the viewers at least for humanity sake EK could at least have shown the depth of her hurt, let the viewers empathise with Pragya, show that he nearly broke her but she is still standing because of the fact that she knows in heart she was innocent all along, and it is such a shame that it took him getting a proof to believe that she was innocent at least something along this line it would have been more logical, not the two seconds sorry.
For such a huge reaction from finding she was unfaithful I think there should have been a bigger reaction when the truth was revealed.
just my opinion. did not mean to offend

Some good discussion going on in this thread.

Enjoyed reading all the POV's and each one of you are right in your own way.

I strongly agree with the CV's not taking their job seriously and failure of screenplay in quite a lot of instances on KB.

AbhiGya's love story and Abhi's downfall from fame to a common man will be two important tracks for the show and I really wish Ekta sends in her best team to cater the audience with these tracks . The current one will just disappoint us, I feel.

Despite of some regressive stuff being shown, the show STILL has a lot of potential and I'd hate seeing it going to waste.

They really need to buck up the strong elements of Pragya's character because that's something which grabbed a lot of eyeballs when the show started.

The exact same point, bud! Honestly, Sriti and Shabbir as an on-screen couple are fire- but the portrayals of their characters turned out way too disgusting yesterday. How could that apology have been so simple? How could she forgive and thank him so easily? Characterless, gold digger and what not was hurled at her time after time... I mean there's a limit to how regressive something can be. Pragaya truly is dipicted a doormat, as Swati just mentioned. And above all, I completely agree as to how the fans don't want to see beyond the fandom. Oh, I love these two- the reason why I started watching this show in the first place. I'm completely smitten with Shabbir.. But, well I guess both my sense and sensibility are stable. There's got to be some limitation as upto what extent can all of us let go of how things are portrayed and a woman de-characterized. Half of the population, which is non-Indian or not presently living here are actually taking it to be what India is. How are we supposed to justify that India in many ways is changing. May be not much, but yes it is.

I wish the zee creative team wakes up soon enough.

People defending the show are simply in love with jodi and spend their time trying to rationalize the foolishness we see. I believe it helps them digest what they see - a bit of denial and cognitive dissonance goes hand-in-hand. However, rationalizing it does not make what we see acceptable.

One of the writers of EK shows and now of Gul Khan's told me that Zee as a channel is a full-fledged production house for melodramas - the channel owners have a lot of say with the storylines. So if they are of a backward and regressive mindset, they will pressure the producer and CVs to deliver this nonsense even if they don't like it.

DT Note:

Let's try not to stereotype or target others due to different opinions. Everyone is entitled to their own view, and it's not fair to expect someone else to agree with you always. Also, please keep discussion about other shows to a minimum.

Very interesting and intense discussions here. I loved reading all of them.

I;m really surprised that Ekta lost the plot, literally, at such an early stage in a show.

At the beginning, the portrayal of Pragya as a strong individual showed great promise. But, the premature and unexpected deflation of that strength soon put an end to any expectations of a strong female characterisation.

In hindsight, it seems clear why the deviation took place. The show hardly made an impact on the viewers at the start since the main female lead had a mind of her own and knew how to use it. She actually stood up for herself and for members of her family and put to shame those people who are commonly revered in Indian society...the "Ladkewalle" and that too at the wedding pandal.
What were the trps then? Nada.
Now that she's behaving like a wilting weed, taking abuse from all directions, the trps have shot sky high. So, we are getting more of the same.
Moral of the story:
Strong girl...bin it.
Weak, hapless girl...bring it on.

The only individual here that goes against the saas-bahu norm is the adoring grand-mother-in-law. What's the bet that she's going to turn a 180 degrees and become the bad 'un once she wakes up? I saw the last bit (Laut ao Trish proved far more exciting in spite of pathetic acting) where the old lady wakes up with an odd expression on her face...my logic is ...why make her regain consciousness once everything was done and dusted? She ought to have been the leading light in declaring Pragya innocent without needing proof thus, shaming Abhi.
Looks like the old lady's going to be the next hurdle in the couple's life this time around!

I genuinely find it difficult to watch this show. I followed it for a bit only because I like Sriti and because I have great memories of Shabbir in his previous show. But, after a few weeks, I just couldn't face watching the show, mainly because of Abhi's silly characterization and Pragya's
wilting act.
