I just now finished watching Main Aur Mr. Right... And well.. here is my review on it.. I am no critic as such.. and this is first time I am reviewing something.. Anyway i will go from bad to good..in that order..

Crappy things
Side characters - YUCK! Empty soulless, vacant, waste of spaces - that is the sweet and short version of the characters
Acting of the side characters - If possible for anyone to make badly written crappy characters even more disgusting they managed that spectacularly!!
Narration - Stupid audition tapes in the middle - I fast forwarded all of them!
Flow of the story - it was disjointed.. and quite often very jarring. But then again all the scenes that felt jarring to me were scenes when more than 2 of the side characters were present and opened their mouths.. WHICH unfortunately was a LOT!

Bad things
Shehnaz's acting when she was in the beginning and most of the time when she was when she was with that bunch of losers who thought they were actors!
Her acting in that drunk scene - that was BAD
That song Yaar Bina Chain Kahare was not good.. it was very very ill used rather than the song itself being that bad. I don't put it in the crappy lot only cz i liked watching them in it if I take it out of context from the moment they crammed it in.

Not so good things
The moments Sukhi was angry.. I saw ASR.. and he wasn't supposed to be that.. He was supposed to be Sukhi being angry.
Both the instances where when Aaliya insults wannabe actors and he loses his temper, and then when she comes to meet him after being with that other guy (sorry don't remember the name) and he is initially angry and tells her that he shouldn't have trusted a person like her.. well I saw a stark ASR and was well.. let's say my mind was a bit messed up for a bit..

Quite good things
Shehnaz's acting when she was with Barun.. whenever they shared screen space barring that single time when she had to act drunk she was pretty good! And they do share quite good chemistry!
Its kinda like when she is with the only person in that film who knows what acting is, she also acts quite good. Rest of the time - irritating!
Moving on cz the next part is better..

Good things
The storyline as a whole was really sweet.. if only they had written it properly and more than that executed it well and oh ya with some people who could act that is considering they ate so much screen time for a bunch of good for nothing side kicks!!
If they had done it better I am very sure it would have been appreciated.. and even with the crappy parts it was sweet enough that I enjoyed the gist of it as a tale.

Really really awesome things
Barun!! No words to tell! He was SERIOUSLY good! I did NOT like the initial lafanga Suki! I cringed too! So there u go! That was Barun Sobti and I DO NOT cringe watching that man! Kudos to him! He was perfect as that initial classless, crass, immature guy with big dreams and nothing else with him..
Then the phase of transformation halfway through - with that haircut.. he acquired a beautiful mixture of both Sukhi's innate traits, embarrassing bits once in a while as well as the slight emergence of Hridhaan ..And that was the time I kinda started liking Suki.. and enjoying him and Aaliyah..
And then when he has mastered Hridhaan and was in character - very very good! He was Sukhi as Hridhaan! And a character inside a character is a really awesome thing! I saw that difference.
And the growth of Sukhi as a human is a very likable.. in fact really sweet! His looks doesn't do any harm at this point!! :p
Be it in humor, be it in heartache and sadness he was very much Sukhi.. Never saw a previous character of his.. As I said above as a bad thing except in his anger - in 2 moments actually every other moment he was very much in character.. just perfect in playing that role..
Bhool Na Jaana song was beautiful! He was simply wonderful in it! He reduced me to tears in those parts..
And the ending.. it was really sweet.. I finished it off with a smile on my face..

And I don't regret watching it..In fact I am gonna watch some parts again for sure..AND I will completely fast forward every second I see one of those crappy sidekicks and watch from next time cz this once I sat through the whole thing for Barun.. just to get an idea abt the whole thing.. but now I am only gonna rewatch some of Aliyah and his parts as well as alone bits of his..

Verdict - If you love Barun IT IS A MUST WATCH! Its nothing great.. Just a sweet film, badly written and badly executed and badly put together and so badly acted by some people that u will feel like going inside the screen and slapping them! But he makes it worth it.. He makes u laugh and also makes u sad for him.. and in the end u will end up smiling with him in happiness..
Its a case of a badly written movie with badly written characters brought down by every single person except the 2 leads.. and of them too only Barun ends up not disappointing u..though Shehnaz is quite good as I said in places when she is not with those losers bunch.. And they r cute together (most of the time)!

And if you are not a Barun fan - Give it a miss. cz he is the only good thing about this film..which could have been so much better, but is not..

Ok that is it! My honest review.

The critics are right, this movie is bad.

Actually, the concept was quite interesting but I think the director of this film tried to make it like Hollywood romcoms but the final product ended up being a mess. The 1st part was quite alright, moved like Chennai Express though, with a few laughs but the 2nd half was stretched so badly and ended up being boring.

Screenplay was ordinary, editing was bad and direction was poor. No offense, but the actors who enacted Alia's friends cannot act to save their lives except maybe that Shauneet guy but overall he was strictly below average. I saw him in a movie somewhere this year but can't seem to remember which movie it was.🤔 That Diya chick was average in the scenes where she had to act bitchy otherwise she was bad.

I liked only 1 song in the movie: Bhool na jaana. Beautiful.

Shehnaz was good in the parts where she had to roll her eyes and behave all perfect but she is bad in emotional scenes. Some of Alia's outfits were amazing and Shehnaz pulled them off well😛 I was not impressed with her on a whole though. Some scenes required Shehnaz to show emotion but she failed to emote as per to what the scene requires which made the scenes fall flat.

And...

Barun Sobti. He was a surprise for me! He is actually a good and natural actor. He is cute and plays Sukhi with ease. Truly, the only moments you will laugh heartily are when he is there. He did rise above the crap direction and acted well. I think he did a great job with the expressions. Some dialogues were not that funny but his facial expressions and dialogue delivery leave you in splits😆 I kinda missed him in the 2nd part. After the scene where he played the guitar, I felt that the other actors could not keep up with his acting. He made them seem like junior artistes! It is as if, the viewer knows what is happening, that Sukhi is going to be isolated, but the mediocre dialogue delivery of all the others and bad editing leaves you cringing and at the same time, he throws an expression which breaks your heart. Those make you wonder what the hell is this talented thing doing in this film?

This could have been a good movie if you had put an Ayan Mukherjee as director, a good editor and replace all the actors except Barun Sobti with people who can actually act.

I swear to god that I didn't write my own review after reading this. But later when i saw this and realized that we have pretty much shared the same opinions..
But glad to know a none Barun fan too felt the amazing actor in him in that and the appreciation that is coming.

Thank you for sharing :)

Main Aur Mr Right 1st Weekend Box Office Collection

December 15, 2014 0

Barun Sobti's Main Aur Mr Riight, Badlapur Boys had very low 1st weekend box office collections. The collections in the first weekend are higher for Badlapur Boys compared to Main Aur Mr Riight.

In spite of being a very popular star on Television with a good fan following, Barun Sobti's Bollywood Debut could not find its target audience and had a disastrous run at the box office. Badlapur Boys on the other hand was a well intended effort at highlighting the sport of Kabbaddi but unfortunately it could not get the attraction it deserved due to poor marketing and no buzz.

Day Wise Box Office Collections of Badlapur Boys

  • Friday :- 15 lakhs
  • Saturday :- 16 lakhs
  • Sunday :- 18 lakhs

Total (1st Weekend) :- 0.49 cr

Day Wise Box Office Collections of Main Aur Mr Right

  • Friday :- 6 lakhs
  • Saturday :- 7 lakhs
  • Sunday :- 8 lakhs

Total (1st Weekend) :- 0.23 cr

After going through many reviews, I do see the point that story wise it wasn't that bad and might have also looked promising on paper. But the final translation from paper to screen lacked vision and experience. Though in film business we can't go taking into consideration that the director was just 22 years old, what's presented to world is the final product and one would be judged only on that basis. All I can say is, the attempt was intended well but didn't come off convincing.

On Sobti, I have always honestly felt that being an ardent follower of his work, I'd be biased. Sometimes just to refute my biases, I'll be extremely critical with the sole purpose of looking for mistakes. I have done that quite a few times.

So when fair appreciation comes from a non-fan who must clearly harbour no biases of any sort, it really feels great. So thank you for your honest opinions. 😃

@bold, absolutely right.

Sukhi was perfect in every way. From the start till end. I'm very happy for him. His voice, I don't see a problem.. maybe when he speaks fast, few words aren't clear. I'm sure he will correct it. Yes.. the mentions from the critics does speak a lot.

Yes, there is a lot to improvise and being an intelligent and thinking actor, he will do that 😃

i somehow managed to watch the film, i don't know how to review, but the only thing that is in my mind about that film is Barun's scenes only, he was brilliant as Sukhi. Leaving him, nothing was there much memorable in the film. As sunara said, a character inside another character and he did justice to both of them. He again proved, he is a brilliant performer.

Thanks PhitteMuhTera (interesting username btw), Princessunara, and Ankitamishra201 for your reviews! I enjoyed reading them. Princessunara, I like how you mentioned the character within the character. I didn't think about that when I was writing my review, but you're totally right on that! Barun was brilliant as both Sukhi and Hridaan and in those occassions where one slips into the other! Here's my review:

Barun is the most RIIGHT in the film, however, there are some other aspects which in my opinion, are right. More on that below. Overall, the film was average for me. I didn't find it terribly bad, but it could have been much better. May have some spoilers, so just beware.

Story: Aliya is a successful career-oriented woman who is on the lookout for her Mr. Riight, especially after facing peer pressure from her round-table discussion friends. She finally casts Sukhi as her make-believe boyfriend "Hridaan". From this point on, a lot of things go wrong with the other couples in Aliya's group, and it's about how they solve their differences.

Concept: The concept of the film is not new, but was promising and it had the potential to be a much better film with the RIIGHT treatment.

Execution: Adeeb had a good concept to deal with, but I wish he had paid more attention to the execution of the film, making the scenes more crisp. The auditions placed randomly throughout the film had very little relevance and broke the flow of the scenes. I think it is understandable to show a few audition clips in the movie since Aliya is a casting director, but to keep showing it throughout the movie takes away from the story and eats away the lead's screen space. In the future, Adeeb needs to focus on the story better and not let scenes like this disrupt the flow of the movie. Something he can improve on. A few other things which needed better clarification: why the couples end up blaming Aliya and Sukhi for events which have gone wrong in their lives. I was like, "What The?". Yes, Aliya probably should not have lied to them about Sukhi in the first place, but what has that got to do with the couples' problems? Also, too many round-table discussions, which could have been done more privately between the couples. So, now to aspects of execution that I felt went right. There are some very nice moments in the film, even some which don't include Sukhi, to my surprise. The baby shower scene where all the couples, except for Sukhi, come back together and patch up. That was a nicely done scene. The scene with Aliya and Niyati alone was well scripted and enacted. I also like the few moments in the film where Sukhi tries to give his point of view to Aliya's friends - to Niyati at the vineyard scene and her husband at the restaurant. Other good scenes: all of Sukhi & Aliya's confrontation scenes about struggling actors & why she's missing him later on.

Message: Adeeb has done a good job with the simple, underlying message of the film. You don't need a checklist to find your Mr./Ms. Right. Don't look for perfection, look for someone who you know will make you happy. No one is perfect. I think that is what Aliya was trying to say at the end. There are some scenes in the film which have conveyed this message well.

Songs: Bhool Na Jaana is the best one for me. Farhan Sayeed's vocals and Barun's portrayal of pain was amazing. I really felt for Sukhi here. This song really deserved more recognition. Desi Daru and Khuda Khair were great also. KK is played twice in the movie. I really liked listening to Pyaon Pyaon in the audio, but I wish the song just focused on Sukhi and Aliya. That little head step was funny. I wasn't surprised with Sukhi's version in Pyaon Pyaon, it is very typical of him😆. Jugni, was it in the movie? Not sure. Yaar Bina came up randomly. Barun and Shenaz need to improve in dancing, but Barun's bhangra step is cute! Overall, the music is very good!

Performances:

Supporting Cast - I find only the actress who plays Niyati impressive. She does a decent enough job with the role given to her. Kavi, I have heard a lot about, but he doesn't have much of an impressive role here. The rest of the supporting cast were average, did not impress much.

Shenaz - she has done a nice job in the film, obviously there are areas where she needs improvement. I liked her in some scenes. She was sweet in the confession scene and in her monologue at the end. She talked a lot about her "improvisation" with Barun in some scenes in the movie (was that the word she used? I don't remember). I could see that for sure.

Barun+Shenaz Chemistry: They looked sweet together in the film. I wish they had shown a little bit more romance in the film. They looked cute in the end scenes.

Barun - saved the best for the last! He is FANTASTIC in all of the scenes that he had and looked really handsome and cute. He really made Sukhi a believable and lovable character even though he had less screen time as the others. He made me laugh, he made me smile, and he made me sad when he was sad. His comic timing is as equally great as his emotional scenes and outbursts of anger scenes. I really wish that he had more scenes in the movie, I really missed him during the second half. His voice projection was perfect, IMO. My favorite scenes of his: where he talks about the challenges that struggling actors face, shirtless scene + confrontation with Aliya, his expressions in Desi Daru song, the end confession scene, Sukhi giving advice to Niyati and her husband, the "I Lau You" audition.

OVERALL, the movie was average. Barun was definitely the best part, but Shenaz did a nice job too, and the music was good. There are some nice memorable scenes in the movie too, most of them for me are Sukhi's scenes, but there are one or two others that are likeable also. When the DVD arrives, I will watch mostly Barun scenes + a few additional ones that I mentioned!
