Dunno about others, but I was a witness to how women have the requisite physical strength to deal with their supposedly superior male attackers.
I studied in an all women's college. I took public transport to college, as did many of my friends and college mates. In the vicinity , there were a couple of two more women's colleges. Many women thus used this particular bus route to get to college and study.
Suffice to say that our bus had many unwanted visitors who would get on without any destination in mind. We instinctively knew who they were- their lewd glances and their 'accidental' brushing against our bodies were a dead giveaway. Our state transport system even published in a report that the bus number we travelled on reported the most number of eve-teasers in a day. The only thing that made us feel safe was that we had our friends and college mates with us. And the kind driver and conductor would also look out for us and tell those people off.
It all changed one day.
A junior of mine was harassed and groped by a man. We sadly didn't realize what had happened because the bus was very crowded.
Rather than take it silently as the rest of us had, she decided to take matters into her own hands and changed the scheme of things.
The meek girl was transformed into something entirely else, as she kicked, slapped and busted him right in front of our fascinated eyes. She was so livid, she even brought down her bag on him again and again, and kept beating him up till he begged for mercy. Till this date, I have never seen someone defending themselves so vigorously. She was as awesome as a ninja.
Later we learnt that the girl had taken boxing classes and was from Manipur (the same state as Mary Kom ). The brave girl taught the man a very valuable lesson- never mess with a woman. She embodied the courage that we regretfully hadn't had till then to stand up for ourselves.
Taking inspiration from her, many girls in our college enrolled in karate classes. We were determined to fight for our self-respect.
All I will say is- nothing is impossible. To protect ourselves, all we need is a little courage and some essential training in self-defence. Brace up, ladies!😊
