Hi ,
It is so nice to see your post here on SC after a long time .I feel GMT created a character of Saras as a modern , progressive man . I don't think he was a traitor but maybe not ready for commitment. He was not stereo type of a man .He wanted to reform and uplift the society.Marriage was a hindrance.Secondly, he knew Guman's evil nature .He knew she will make his wife miserable and she will not be happy in this household.Kumud was strong she could have helped Saras with his vision of modern society if she married him .Till the end Kumud was in his heart . The end of the book describes that Saras had built a special room in his palatial house in Bombay , where he had hung a portrait of Kumud in that room . Nobody else could enter that room and everyday he would go and stand before Kumud's portrait . It was a pure love .When the novel was written critics asked GMT that when he is talking of reforms in his book why did not get Kumud remarried ...why did he shy away from widow re-marriage . Character of Kumud was based on GMT's daughter who herself was widow. The daughter never wanted that Kumud should marry. So he did not get Kumud remarried .
Rose, I had no idea KUMUD was modeled on his own daughter. And there's been so much criticism on Saras's marriage to kusum, but I understand that their relationship was platonic till the end, can you tell something more about that?

Thanks Rose, for mentioning that Kumud's fate was mentioned on GRT's daughter's. Now it makes some sense. The writer stuck to the prevailing social conditions since the issue was present right there in his house. Can you tell us more about the Sundargiri conversations? Also, what made Kumud force Saras to marry Kusum? If she opted out of re-marriage, the stigma of getting Kusum married to anyone else would be much less. Right? I say this because, there is a talk in the movie where Kumud's bua questions how they will get her second daughter married if the elder one remarries. Also, Kumud was already 'tainted'(due to the revelation of Saras-Kumud relationship in her in-laws' house). Was that the reason that the family worried about Kusum? That Kumud's character would hamper prospects of Kusum's marriage?Other than the above reasons, which didi would want her sister to go into a marriage that had no future. She knew Saras would not have anyone else in his heart. So Kusum kind of got sacrificed. For no reason?Kumud didn't want to get married again and wanted to do seva of her FIL n devar. Saras wanted to become a sanyasi after Kumud's rejection. No one asked Kusum what she wanted?

Wow. That's quite a revelation, Rose...i didnt know about the room with Kumud's portrait, either... Still dont understand why GMT had to do that to Kusum in the book... Did she have morpankh tendencies? I thought not!!!! That abomination could only have come from the "writers" who wrote for TV and had to prolong the show's life...
