Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai belongs firmly in that third category. The veteran filmmaker, who has spent decades turning confusion into comedy and misunderstandings into blockbusters, returns with what could very well be his final directorial outing. And fittingly, he doesn't try to reinvent himself. Instead, he serves up a colourful platter of mistaken identities, romantic chaos, eccentric characters, catchy songs and enough madness to keep the wheels spinning. The result? A film that's messy, loud, ridiculous and surprisingly entertaining once it settles into its groove.

Some Jokes Miss, But The Madness Eventually Works

Comedy is always subjective, and Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai throws so many jokes at the wall that some are bound to stick. Not every punchline works. A few gags feel outdated, while certain humour choices could have easily been left behind in another decade. Toilet jokes and easy fat-shaming laughs occasionally make appearances and feel unnecessary. But when the film leans into its self-awareness, it finds its funniest moments. The screenplay becomes increasingly playful in the second half, and several one-liners arrive with perfect timing.

The humour isn't sophisticated. It doesn't want to be. This is old-school Bollywood comedy operating on pure energy, confusion and timing.

Varun Dhawan Is Clearly Having A Blast

Varun Dhawan slips comfortably back into the comic zone that has always suited him. His performance often feels like a spiritual cousin to the energetic characters he played in films like Main Tera Hero. He runs, panics, lies, shouts and reacts with infectious enthusiasm throughout the film. At times he goes slightly overboard, but that's also part of the character's charm.

Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde understand the assignment perfectly. Both actresses bring warmth, glamour and confidence to their respective roles while effortlessly fitting into the film's heightened universe.

Mrunal gets some emotional moments to play with, while Pooja contributes significantly to the film's lighter portions. Together, they ensure the romantic triangle remains engaging despite the screenplay's silliness.

Maniesh Paul is likable but underutilised. Given his natural comic abilities, one wishes the script gave him more opportunities to steal scenes.

Jimmy Shergill adds gravitas as the overprotective brother who seems permanently ready to settle matters with intimidation. Meanwhile, Mouni Roy emerges as one of the film's pleasant surprises, making the most of her eccentric character and delivering some genuinely amusing moments. Veterans like Chunky Panday, Rajpal Yadav, Johny Lever and others pop in to add flavour.

Final Verdict: Pure Popcorn, Zero Pretence

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai isn't trying to redefine comedy. It isn't chasing realism, subtlety or social commentary. What it offers instead is two-and-a-half hours of colourful confusion, exaggerated characters and old-fashioned Bollywood entertainment.

Yes, the first half drags. Yes, some jokes feel dated. And yes, the climax stretches longer than necessary. But once the film embraces its own insanity, it becomes difficult not to enjoy the ride.

David Dhawan's possible swansong is loud, silly, occasionally frustrating and often funny. Most importantly, it knows exactly what it is. And sometimes, that's more than enough.
