Now that the factoid is in the public domain, I guess its okay to talk about it: Bips had a boob job. There, I said it.

Is that news? Apparently so. For those not in the loop, this is about a gorgeous actress called Bipasha Basu getting silicon implants to enhance her God-given breasts, in order to do better justice to her role in a movie appropriately titled Jism (Body) .

The news was recently broken by a tabloid, quoting the surgeon who performed the operation and claims he was not paid for his services. What's the bet it is the same man who leaked the story to a friendly journo? Is that what its come to? What became of medical ethics?

Confidentiality clauses? Plain decency, for God's sake? As the story stands, Ms Basu checked in, had herself fixed up (three additional inches), and checked out.

When the time came to pay up, she disappeared and refused to take the doc's calls.

In desperation, his office contacted Ms Basu's boyfriend, John Abraham, who said he was not aware of any such operation.

Soon, even the actor refused to respond to calls from the clinic. Left with no alternative, the doctor may have come up with the idea of exposing the actress in print. Maybe, he thought he could shame her into settling his bill (Rs 2.5 lakh).

The man's quotes are non-committal and safe. Could be he consulted a sharp lawyer before taking the step. But which ever way one looks at this botched up business, it is a pretty low down thing to do.

Imagine such a trend catching on in other fields. Imagine a lawyer threatening to go public with a client's briefs! Imagine a CA sneaking on a businessman. In a doctor's case, the shame is multiplied many times over. Doctors enjoy a very special status in any society. We trust them with our lives! Because of the intimacy the job involves, doctors become privy to even non-medical information.

To abuse the patient's complete trust is to break a sacred bond. Cosmetic surgery today has become as essential as a regular visit to the dentist, especially if the person is in showbiz and has a lot of money riding on cup size. As is the case with Bipasha.

It can be argued that movie stars are notorious for not paying bills. This is true enough. But what stopped that doctor from asking for his fees upfront, before going anywhere near the scalpel?

Unfortunately for the man, a boob job these days is seen as a professional requirement, a small investment for women whose careers are directly linked to their chest dimensions. Jism certainly jump started Bipasha's stalled career and moved her into the big league of glorified item girls, who had few inhibitions and huge ambitions.

Jism capitalised on Bipasha's ample assets, and made serious money for the producers.

After its success, Bipasha became the it girl, with a string of roles that required skimpy attire. Her bikini clad appearance in Dhoom-2 , plus her sizzling item number ( Beedi jalailey ) in Omkara propelled her into a bracket that saw big bucks rolling in.

How short sighted of her not to have paid the surgeon his fees, considering they amounted to such a piddly amount in comparison to what those enhanced breasts earned her.

Well, the paradox today is that these surgeries have gone legit. No eyebrows go up in shock and frankly, nobody cares.

Every other aspiring actress goes under the knife to fix assorted body parts. The only thing big about this deal are the extra inches a surgeon adds. Too bad Ms Basu's doc isn't a gentleman. I hope after this leak, he never recovers his money.
