"The clues to a great story"
First of all a warm hug to all the ky2 members and may I say I'm so thrilled at some of the insightful and meaningful discussions on the narrative.
I was compelled to write this piece as an ode to your maturity and magnanimity in the understanding of this story.
I've borrowed this heading from a TED talk by Andrew Stanton who wrote "finding nemo", " wall e", " toy story" to name a few. I can't seem to post the link but please have a look.
I'm going to hijack some points to understand why ky2 a teenage drama on MTV has captivated me and made me want to share my views and why these characters have made a place in my heart.
The bits in quotes are from the talk.

"Storytelling -- is like joke telling. It's knowing your punchline, your ending, knowing that everything you're saying, from the first sentence to the last, is leading to a singular goal, and ideally confirming some truth that deepens our understandings of who we are as human beings. We all love stories. We're born for them. Stories affirm who we are. We all want affirmations that our lives have meaning. And nothing does a greater affirmation than when we connect through stories. It can cross the barriers of time, past, present and future, and allow us to experience the similarities between ourselves and through others, real and imagined."

These lines epitomise KY2 for me...all the characters echo with a 30 year old and a 13 yr old albeit we may be connecting from different perspectives. The writers have actually written a story, there is a punch line, ending, and the characters are so well etched out that they magnify human emotions without being judgemental. All of them Fab5 or NH3 are so...human yes I think that's the right word.

"The children's television host Mr. Rogers always carried in his wallet a quote from a social worker that said, "Frankly, there isn't anyone you couldn't learn to love once you've heard their story." And the way I like to interpret that is probably the greatest story commandment, which is "Make me care" -- please, emotionally, intellectually, aesthetically, just make me care. We all know what it's like to not care. You've gone through hundreds of TV channels, just switching channel after channel, and then suddenly you actually stop on one. It's already halfway over, but something's caught you and you're drawn in and you care. That's not by chance, that's by design."

That is why I love the discussions on the forum, even the characters I am not connecting with you guys make me want to know more about them. Now I'm curious about Harshad,Dhruv and Alya. A strong theme is always running through a well told story, as is the case in KY2. It challenges my notions, makes me root for their life story, critique their weakness yet not be judgmental. In a way I found myself , I seemed to have lost myself in all the different roles I play in my daily life.

Finally the last bit
"And that's the first story lesson I ever learned. Use what you know. Draw from it. It doesn't always mean plot or fact. It means capturing a truth from your experiencing it, expressing values you personally feel deep down in your core."

So a big hug to the writers as well for great storytelling.

Sorry for the long post...

DocšŸ¤—
I so totally agree, the characters are so well etched and so well-characterised. they are not candy-coated white knights and princesses of dreams, but real living human beings that come with flaws and all. Not a single character can be characterised as good or bad, every single character has good and bad in them, just like most human beings do. Why is it people don't like characters that come with flaws, is it because society does not want a mirror held up to them? A great story is one that takes you along on the journey and keeps you on your toes. A great story is one that constantly keeps you questioning your beliefs.

I am so glad that this story is more about real people than characters made out of pink bubbles and froth, every character on this show has an interesting story to be told.

First, Doc. It ain't long. If this is a long post then tou i should pack my bags and run away from this forum cuz my posts feel like some torture devices >.<

Second, god. I love having you on the forum. You're so well experienced and have all these amazing things to quote...it's something I can't do. So when you have someone who has seen/read/experienced many great things and then that person gets attached to a show which seemingly looks as the "same old romantic crap" with substance and novelty to it, and basically go all obsessed about it...it's such a wonderful sight to watch. All of us started watching the show for various reasons. But now here we are, actively discussing not just one or two but almost all aspects of the show. It's as you say, this story has something to tell. Nothing here is just for the heck of it. Every incident, every character, every little nuance adds more to the story.

The art of story telling isn't easy because not everyone can a tell. Some stories have a beginning but no planned end. Some have a dramatic end but getting to that point messes things up. KY2 seems like one show which knew what it wanted to tell before it started telling. And that thing, in Indian Telly, is rare. It's super rare. So when I see this sudden burst of fame this show has gotten, I go surprised but then I also say, "well, the show deserves it."

It's one story. It has one set of character. It has one thing to say. But the way we all perceive it, approach it, decipher them; it makes that one thing into many. It makes it more relate-able, more grounded, more real, more memorable. RK said it right in my post that youth shows have more depth than so called mature shows because youth has more broad visions and the ability to accepts things as they are. And KY2 gives us just that. If it gives us some fated, fantastical romance then it also gives us harsh realities of some relationships. It has struck such a fine balance between what audience wish to see and what they should see that...57 episodes down and I'm still in awe ke aise shows bhi bante hain?

And last, someone should definitely tweet this to MTv. To let them know that they are doing a SUPERB job and they should continue it. Stop listening to outside voices and concentrate of the story they wish to tell, not what audience demands to see. Because them sticking to their vision is what's making this show this popular in the first place.

@Mais I love reading your posts, I meant that it's long for me...I'm supposed to be workingšŸ˜‰
Thank you for your kind words. I think telly as a medium is so powerful and under-utilised. I've had to sit through a horrendous show called Saathiya coz my mum in law watches it. It scarred me for life I tell you. So KY2 is my secret Idaho.

Rightfully saidšŸ‘ As usual..beautifully written..

To put it briefly.. The main attraction for me is the depth in the characters & the warmth in the relationships.. once I find that I look for a beautiful story.. & other intriguing factors that keep me hooked to a show! Good actors are important as well to do justice to the characters & their emotions.

A lot of times I quit a show because it gets monotonous or I sometimes watch shows in on-off mode depending on the tracks! I'm always in for anything interesting!

In case of KY2 I got instantly connected to it the first time I watched an epi(early last month) It had all the factors I mentioned @bold above.. That one epi was enough for me to go back and watch all the episodes from the start.. It's commendable how the writers have built up the story & the characters.. with a lot of focus given to human emotions..sensitively dealt issues & the attention to details. There has not been a stagnant point & I can trust them to keep me hooked throughout the show!

And yeah..I never thought I'd be addicted to a college Rom-com or as such after having watched some mature showsšŸ˜†.. but this show really surprised me.. It's a young show handled maturely!
Plus Intensity is something that gets imprinted in my heart! This show has it all!

**Edited
..
Forgot to mention 'Humour' I can't sit through a show daily which has absolutely no homour in it!
Overall crisp writing.. Beautiful storytellingšŸ‘šŸ¼

Doc if i had not known that u r a doctor i would have probably thought that u r a literature student ...u write sooo beautifully...i remember the first post of yours that i had read was the one where u had given the meaning of the word bully...it was one of my post where i had blasted the CVs for going overboard with the bullying act...but ur words made me look at bullies in complete different light...yeah every character in this show is flawed ...that was one of the reason becoz of which i found this show distasteful but now i realised how wrong i was...i had become accustomed to seeing 'angelic' characters on shows. this show popped that bubble of illusion in which i was living and helped me to realize the importance of portraying the reality on prime time tv.

@matreyee thank you for ur post. The reason I like this forum so much is the discussion is mature not only in content but also in context. People are open to different perspectives and isn't that the beauty of a daily. All of us understand the visual medium by our own experiences. Moreover it's wonderful that we can share it without fear of judgement.

Is there a way for someone to personally get in touch with them? 'Cause either the MTV people or the CVs, someone should tell them what we're all pretty much saying like 'do what you guys what, tell your story - don't listen to the TRP!'

... Or do they nose around this forum? šŸ˜›

Doc - How easily you explain human emotions. Kudos! Loved reading your post - crisp, clear, and well-balanced...and those quotes are perfect & so apt to describe this story.
I admire how each character in this story has an aura of mystery that surrounds them, and the fact that they all have their own problems, own flaws, and their own path-breaking journey is very commendable. For that, the writers deserve a big hug!

It is extremely hard to be able to focus on 7 or so characters, and have their own parallel tracks running side by side. Yes, Indian TV Youth shows that focus on friendship promote their show with all their characters as leads, but rarely do they, actually end up showing that...along the way, we end up getting our main leads, while the other ones get very easily sidelined, and barely get any screen-presence...with KY2 - that has not happened yet, because I want to know more about Dhruv, Alya, Harshad, Cabir, Mukti-Harshad angle, how Navya will see the truth...etc. There is so so much more yet to know...and the fact that these characters are "human" only enhances the quality of this show...the art of story telling is extremely hard, and dealing with a show that appeals to both Teens and adults is something that the writers have paid utmost attention to...if they continue to do what they are doing till now...this show will change the callibre and set high standards for all other shows in the country...
