I haven't seen the film yet, but Mary has always spoken very highly of her husband. Have been following her career for a few years now. Militants killed her husband's father and she almost quit boxing after that. He encouraged her not to do that. Family has had to deal with many threat from militants as they don't want her representing India. Dunno whether all these were shown in the movie.

Probably they haven't. They wouldn't want to antagonise the UNLF, especially since they're struggling to convince the former to allow the movie's release in Manipur.

Of course, we should work towards a society where men and women are recognized equally - for their efforts as well as for their sacrifices.
But since that kind of society does not exists yet, any man who on his own (and not out of the expectations of the society) helps his wife achieve her dreams will be considered extraordinary. Changing the society's notions and rules is not a day's job .. good men like these pave the baby steps that lead to the larger change that can take place in the long term. So, let's appreciate the guy for doing something good of his own accord .. not just because he is A MAN but because he is a rare good human being.
BTW, as far as I understand from my east Indian friends, the society in these states has stronger females. The male domination is not as much. I have never been there personally, so can't comment.

They didn't show that. They show curfew and violence in Manipur, but nothing about Onler's family or who the militants are.

The discrimination against NE Indians and rifts with rest of India was also barely shown.

Unfortunately, It's no hidden secret that we live in a society that has double standards for both men and for women. I haven't seen the film as of yet, but men like Onler are a rarity. I completely agree though that this should be a given. A man should support his wife, or his girlfriend, or any women in his life for that matter.
I read this quote somewhere , " Women who love themselves for who they are, are strong; but men who love such women, more so."

The intent here is not to discredit Onler or say he should not be appreciated.

The point really is

- A supporting spouse should be a norm for both genders and not an exception

- All supporting spouses should get appreciation for what they do, irrespective of gender

Calmness raised a good point here. A lot of societies in the North-East are matriarchal, and hence what we might witness there may not fit into the 'regular' or 'mainstream' patriarchal scenario. Hence, what he did as a supportive spouse might be perfectly in sync with his social context.
