It amazes me as I sit down to pen this post but I couldn't help myself.

I find it ironical that the woman who I have blamed for the downfall of Indian TV' standards is today behind the show I am in love with - Yeah EK... life has its way of taking you by surprise.

Anyways, I was saying I blamed her a lot because as a kid who grew up in late 80' - early 90's I had the chance to see the metamorphosis of Indian TV to an extent as private channels were introduced in the era beginning with Zee. Those days there were no dailies but weeklies and the shows ended in a stipulated amount of time. The perks of which was a good storyline since the writers weren't forced to think of tracks beyond logic and there was no drama that went on forever.

Coming to why am I ranting all of this today - well I got thinking what is this whole Mihir- Shagun and Poornima Prakash track and somehow my mind raced back to a classic show I watched while growing up that aired on Zee called Hasratein. It evolved around the story of a fallen woman called Savi - short for Savitri - ironic how she doesn't live upto her name though.

In a nutshell this is her story - Savi is the only child of her parents - a homemaker and a music teacher, her father is somewhat a decade her mother' senior. One fine day when Savi is some 8 or 9 years old her mother elopes with a student of her husband' owing to which her dad suffers a heart attack and passes away. She is raised by her bua (dad's sis)and her husband - a childless couple as their own. She ends up hating and resenting her mom for what she did and hence lies to everyone she is dead. When Savi grows up a young man Shyam sees her and falls in love with her at first sight, without any courtship or anything he lands up at her aunt' place and declares his intentions to marry her. The marriage is fixed and there is a happily ever after or so it seems.

A year after their marriage when a son is born to them Shyam learns he was in the dark about Savi' past when her mom appears one day to see her grandchild unable to hold herself back. Savi rebukes her and sends her away... finally the myth is shattered. But as a loving, caring husband Shyam supports her and lends a shoulder to his wife to cry on, he understands her and makes her realize nothing could change his love for her. Her past has no effect on their present or their future - at least he thinks that way.

When their son is a little older, Shyam encourages his wife to work since she says she is bored with not much at home. It is the beginning of the end for them. In a matter of months, Savi changes a lot from a traditional Indian woman - she is now a woman who dons western attire, who chops off her long lovely locks to match her corporate image. Shyam stays silent all through this as he thinks if it makes his wife happy he could live with this change of hers.

Only one day he learns the change in her is owing to another man, her boss, a married man with 2 kids himself and they are having an affair. Arguments ensue and Shyam asks her to break ties with one of them - she chooses her lover over her husband who walks out with their son.

The same girl who once detested, loathed her mother in a way follows her footsteps and starts living in with her lover and even has a love child with the man.

The end of the show is BLAH cos they actually killed it -as Savi is left alone with her daughter since her lover develops some health issues and is taken away by his first wife and kids to be taken care of until the end of his days since his medical treatments are so expensive Savi despite a high paying job cannot afford which they can.

Somehow when I think of this trio - Mihir, Poornima and Shagun - I feel a deja vu and think perhaps Savi' story is also gonna be shown as Shagun' story; the only changes in the tale might be the paramours of their mothers, the reasons why she is no longer seeked out by her own children and a brother, a son in this tale who suffered the most as he lost a mother, a sister and even his father by no fault of his but thankfully had Raman and the other Bhallas who took him under their wing and stayed by him making him be the loyal shadow of a man with whom he is related to via a bond of love, respect and adoration even when he has no one he can call his own even when those related to him via blood still exist.

Aani girl ...

Interesting thot ... 😃 This being an EK serial u will defi see promiscuity at its best 😉 ... out of wedlock kids ... affairs galore ...

Love the way u have connected the dots here ... Its very interesting .. A child is a product of his or her upbringing ... A line which our serial upholds to the T ...

Its why they always show the contrast between Ruhi & Aditya ...
The writers of this show have done such a beautiful job .. every track is about the "rearing of an individual"

Thats the actual story of this serial ...I am glad someone on this forum cottoned on to the STORY LINE ... the serial could've also been called PARVARISH ... but somehow Yeh hai Mohabbatein packs the right PUNCH...

I have written in my past posts that this track is about the title .. each & every Mohabbat is going to be tested ... its going to be fun to watch ... did u notice how another love story was thrown into the mix as well .. that of Param & Simmi .. the "i love Simmi" shocker yesterday night ...

yaar everytime i write a reply to ur post it becomes a mini post from me .. so shall rest while its still sane.😉

Great post Aani👏...Hasratein brings back memories. .it was one of a kind for its time. . And a bold theme ..fairly well executed. ..a first from n the other woman's POV I think.
For once.. the other woman was the centerpiece of the story and the serial did well..so am sure people could relate to it.
Coming to Poornima-Shagun... while the premise you have put across is compelling. .I wish YHM does take that approach in tackling the issue. The stance the makers have taken till now has been cautious..not even giving us a closer look at Shagun's psyche and the reasons for her extra marital affair and subsequent seperation... they have taken the easy route turning her into a brainless..greedy bimbo..and vamp. The book Custody has a interesting take on Shagun's perspective...not justifying her actions but not making her unidimensional too.
YHM has surprised me till now with its story telling..if the introduction of Poornima-Mihir story opens up the Shagun angle the way you have put it across. .I am all game 😊

hey aani, i have watched that show on zee. it was played by shefali chhaya and harsh chhaya(KT) . it was very bold show I must say where woman dares to have EMA for her own reasons. the reason of closeness of savi and KT was weird behavior of shyam too. in very beginning of their married life, savi said about her first love/crush whose name was satish (who actually had died attempting suicide ) to shyam and shyam could not digest it but pretended to digest and he kept name of their own child as satish that behavior of shyam pissed off savi that shyam is misunderstanding her. and meanwhile she started job and she felt same vibes of satish in kt and she was attracted to him .

and in the end after leap of savi-kt s joined life, kt s daughter from his first wife had become drug addicted because of family was broken. to save her life and make her married to good family kt had to show off good father and he had to go to live with his wife he there slept with her first time after leaving her that was shock for savi and kt came across accident and lost memory only he remembered was his own family. no savi and their daughter in the end of the show he could recall.

But yes, some reasons I want to see why shagun actually left raman for . I want to see shagun as grey not as black or white.and I feel even her life is connected with savi.

LOL I know I just hope she doesn't resort to her usual gimmicks of siblings/cousins marrying the same person in a merry go round 😆

Yep cos it has to somehow make sense what would make a woman who was loved by her husband who even had such good in laws take such a step after two kids at that... riches, love or may be a case of being a chip of the old block

Its why they always show the contrast between Ruhi & Aditya ...

exactly and how nurture and nature are as different as could be - nature can do its work alright but it needs nurturing to see to it that a plant doesn't rot, doesn't get infected just like you can rear a child but to be a mother you have to raise one too - just birthing doesn't make one a motheror a parent

Thats the actual story of this serial ...I am glad someone on this forum cottoned on to the STORY LINE ... the serial could've also been called PARVARISH ... but somehow Yeh hai Mohabbatein packs the right PUNCH...

yep as it shows all the different kinds of loves - selfless, selfish and so many more as Tolstoy wrote - ...

if it is true that
there are as many minds as there
are heads, then there are as many
kinds of love as there are hearts

Hi May I pls know your name 😳

first of all I am so happy there are others who know of this show and have seen it on the forum LOL else I would have felt like a fossil 😆 and yep at its time it was a pathbreaker and truly hatke as it was the story of a homemaker turned homewrecker

next I am so glad you are game for this approach cos personally I want to know more of Mihir and for that I have to endure Shagun - also it would make sense why would a woman with two kids and a loving husband take this path - so far Shagun has been shown as black and a brainless, egotistical, greedy character but YHM is making people aware people arent black or white but grey - even Pervy got a OMG moment last night when he admitted he wouldn't use his wife in that way ever and that he loves her!
