Deepika Padukone had a great launchpad. Although the hype around her was slightly too much. I absolutely do not think she deserved any Best Actress nominations that year. She was out of place alongside nominees like Kareena, Rani, Madhuri, Aishwarya, Vidya. And personally I think Sonam performed better in Saaawariya.
While Deepi had great presence, I didn't expect her to go very far. She proved me wrong pretty quickly. I loved her in Bachna Ae Haseeno, Karthik Calling Karthik and Love Aaj Kal.
Today she is #1 -through her dedication, and slightly by default. She just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But I have nothing but love and admiration for her, because I love her personality a lot, more so than her acting.

It really irks me when people misuse the word "bubbly". For goodness sake - Anushka's so-called "bubbly"-ness in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi CANNOT be equated with her full of life character in Jab Tak Hai Jaan or her role in Patiala House where she was more strong-willed than bubbly. And again in Band Baaja Baaraat she displayed a grand plethora of acting prowess and emotions.

From all the new girls, I did expect Asin to rise to #1 followed by Anushka Sharma and Kangana Ranaut. So Deepika's position surprised me. And I still can't believe Asin has gone from number one contender to Gracy Singh in little more than a year.

To answer the initial question. Quality is ALWAYS better than quantity. Both Deepika and Anushka have shown quality work. In my personal opinion I think Anushka has more talent, although Deepika has improved a lot more than people expected which is fantastic. If Anushka has decent roles in Bombay Velvet and PK then she will STRONGLY challenge for the top spot.
Right now Deepika is #1 - and the contenders are Anushka, Kangana, Sonakshi, and very soon Alia Bhatt.
