Wow, the last time I checked it was Bollywood forum where people could talk about their likes and dislikes irrespective of national nonsense. Indian television, right now, sucks. As simple as that. It's not about India as a country. God knows why people are taking it personally. And yes, it is India forums, but on BWF, people don't even watch Indian television, let alone discuss it. So they generally give their honest opinions about TV shows.

And Indian television industry is bad. I have no idea how that is insensitive for Indians. I am an Indian, I have lived in India all my life, I have worked in TFI, and I am honest about what I feel. If criticizing TV industry affects people, then I have nothing to say. It's not about Pak shows either. Asian dramas are much-much superior as well. People praise Asian dramas too. I will like any industry which provides me entertainment like they are supposed to. How does nationality and stuff even figure into this?

@Bold: LOL...Really ? 😆

Asian dramas are nothing more than chick flicks filled with cheese and some more cheese...Nothing superior there, just same old repetition, old wine in a new bottle shit...

ZGH overall was WAY better and executed better. The actrs did a great job. No overacting, no bakwaas, and no dramatic background music with facial zooms on each characters face.

I honestly don't get the comparison between Kasauti and ZGH. They are from two different industries, two different genre's, and Kasauti started way back in 2001. That was ages ago. ZGH is pretty recent (2013). So it is bound to be the popular majority favorite. Kasauti, on the other hand, went on for nearly a decade for which its just very hard to judge the quality of a drama that drags for that long. You can't possibly follow the same drama for that long of a period. It gets stale, boring, and repetitive. I personally watched Kasauti only for about 4-5 months maximum and that too when the Prem and Mukti track was going on. Overall, a stupid boring Ekta serial.

Also, saas-bahu stuff like SNS and Yeh Rishta is actually in the minority now, and there is greater variety. There are youth-oriented true-to-life shows like Sadda Haq, Paanch, Gumrah and Heroes on Channel V, there are mytho shows like Devon Ka Dev Mahadev, Mahabharat. Comedy and kids' shows on Sab TV. Even the "family dramas" leave out kitchen politics nowadays.

This whole "Indian television is saas-bahu crap" is nothing more than a preconceived notion, mainly on part of people who haven't watched TV after the early 2000's.

Err, yes, there are few good shows, I did not deny that.
But Ekta shows are not one of those. I have watched all three shows you mentioned, and she made all three into regressive saas-bahu stuff like she does. Have you watched her latest Kumkum Bhagya? Terrible is the word. I have always thought Ekta does have a vision, but she has never used it. Also, Indian Television industry has a much better infrastructure and much more money than Pak tv industry, so they should produce better shows. Also, every show that scores high on TRP is mostly a saas-bahu or similarly regressive show.
But TBH, Ekta ruined the image of Indian television, hence people our age don't even dare to watch Indian television. My friends definitely don't. I do think majority of the Indian shows are bad, not in comparison with any other industry, but in general. When majority is bad, generalization is fair game, I guess. But hey, that's my opinion. I am sure there are a lot of people who find Indian shows great. And there are/have been some fabulous shows like Sarabhai.

😆 There are some good Asian shows. I really liked slightly offbeat ones like Secret. But yes, too much cheesiness and rich guy-poor girl romance there. Actually British shows FTW. They have basically the best stuff.

I agree partly and disagree partly. i agree that the Youth Channels have good content now. i watched the first two episodes of Yeh Jawani Ta Ra Ri Ri, and it was good. I've been meaning to watch the rest too, but never got around to it. That it's bi-weekly helps. Plus I know others who say good things about lot of other shows on Channel V, as you said.

But let's look at the very same Ekta shows you listed. Bandini, BALH and JA. True they started out different, but where's the quality in content now, or for Bandini towards the end? So much bakwas, illogical aspects etc. Actually bakwas and lack of logic I can accept, but not when it's a standard for almost all shows after a certain period.

Same goes for DKDM. What started out good, didn't know when to stop and does it have the same quality as it did earlier? Mahabharat at least is doing the sensible thing and coming to an end.

While family dramas may leave out literal kitchen politics, much of it still deals with Saas-Bahu even now. Even worse is that almost all the shows are focused and revolving around marriage or of the heroine as a wife (though here this is also the case with many Pakistani shows, which has been criticized by Pakistani writers).

And every cycle just when you think the regressive hate-revenge marriage aspect was coming to a dead end, there's another show which comes up which shows another helpless female who is stuck in a marriage where her husband is determined to make life hell for her.

Even worse is that the audience continues watching and giving numbers to such stuff, all the while lamenting on why Indian television doesn't change. And when there's something different which is on television many of those who complain are not as interested, but still continue to give numbers to the same old same old.

Also let me ask you, where is the quality in many dailies when it comes to consistency and quality in writing, characterization, as well as direction and production?

Star_girl: Precisely. "Ruined image" is the keyword. Most people (especially men) are prone to dissing Indian shows in general discussions since they have been habituated to the "death-rebirth-brain-tumour-plastic-surgery" cycle either by their moms/aunts/grandmas or humorous articles. They have zero clue about the exact happenings of the TV industry at PRESENT.
