EK ANOKHI KAHAANI - Part 43

The buzzing of her phone woke Aastha up. She realised it was 12 am. She couldn't wait more to see her mobile screen to know who was the first person to wish her. For a moment she could hardly believe what she saw... "Shlok Sir calling..." flashing on the screen of her mobile. Her happiness knew no bounds. She was very excited and felt blessed to be wished by Shlok in the first place. She picked up the call...

"Hello..." said Aastha, trying her best to hide her excitement.

"Hello... er... Aastha..." Shlok wasn't sure how to wish her. Aastha was waiting impatiently. "Happy Birthday Aastha!!" Shlok said finally.

Aastha was so happy, she somehow managed to say "Thank you Sir!" and then there was a long silence. Aastha's heart was beating fast. She could hear Shlok's breath over the phone. How she wished Shlok was with her right now! She closed her eyes to feel him... to make sure he was there on the other side... he was there with her!

Suddenly she heard knocks and taps on the door. She could hear Aai, Baba and Ajju coming into her room. "Happy Birthday Aasthu!!" they said in unison and Aastha opened her eyes only to see the ceiling fan! What?! Oh no! Why was all this not real?!! She cursed her fate, but then she recalled the dream and blushed. She wished the dream came out to be true. She checked the time in her mobile... 11:15. Ah! Forty-five more minutes to go...! She lay on the bed... "Go to sleep Aastha... there is still time!" she told herself and closed her eyes thinking of Shlok.

Shlok was awake. He couldn't sleep... or may be he didn't want to. He sat up on the bed, leaning behind on the head-rest. He unlocked the mobile screen to see what time it was. 11:30. He sighed and then a faint smile spread across his lips as he remembered Aastha. It was her birthday the next day, he knew it. And he didn't want to be late in wishing her...! He sat there, waiting for the clock to strike 12.

"Aastha..." Shlok smiled remembering her as he went back through his memory lane. The first time he had seen Aastha on the road, her appearance for the job interview, his hatred towards her, Rahul selecting Aastha, Shlok's purposely appointing her at the event head, the event, his outburst on her at the end of the event... Haa! How wrong he was about her!

Shlok came back to the present. Oh no! What time was it?!! He looked at the clock at once... It was 11:45! Only 11:45?! Why was time moving so slow?!! Shlok had earlier decided to call Aastha at 12. But then he wasn't sure whether she would be awake. He didn't want to disturb her sleep. But what if others wished her at 12? he didn't want to be late either. Sending a message was the best option in this case.

Shlok opened the message window on the phone and began typing a message... H-a-p-p-y B-i-r-t-h-d-a-y ... He didn't know what else to write. He thought this much was enough. He searched Aastha's name through his contacts and selected it. Now only thing to do was to press 'send'. The clock in his mobile showed the time as 11:47. Shlok had to wait for thirteen more minutes.

The memories continued to appear in his mind... Aastha coming to his home after the event to return his clothes, his saying sorry to her, her understanding him... always... His telling her about his Aai which he had never spoken to anyone, her making him understand Anjali, and that changed his life completely. Aastha was the only person with whom he could speak of his deepest griefs... especially about his Aai. And he felt, rather he knew, that she understood him... and that she would always do... He remembered how Aastha always ended up making him feel good... Her coming to his home to search for the file, her bonding with his family members... especially Kavya, her commenting about the mess in his room... Shlok laughed. He remembered his impatience to show her his cleaned room, her falling over him on the bed, her sewing buttons on his shirt... Aah! He would never forget that! She brought him closer to his second Aai... He would forever be thankful to her for that. He remembered his restlessnes whenever she did not pick up his call... He remembered all that happened with her in the office... and that Shikha was behind all that! And then Shikha's words repeated in his mind... I love you Shlok!! I love you so much!! But you don't love me!! Instead, you love her!! I waited for that love for two years and she got it in a few months!! And then he recalled Rahul's words... We all know that you love Aastha... Shlok clutched his hair in frustration. "Aaargh!!" he cried out helplessly. Just then the alarm in his mobile began ringing. It was 12 o'clock. But now the alarm was not pleasing at all... it was irritating! Shlok got hold of his phone and banged it on the wall. The phone was dismantled and the battery fell out. Shlok was breathing heavily, his body wet with sweat. His throat felt dry. He gulped down some water. He walked to his cupboard and searched for something and finally got it! The bottle of alcohol that he had not seen since years! He had began drinking when Karan had met with that horrible accident due to Swati. He filled the glass with alcohol and and sat down to drink, hoping to forget everything for a while atleast...

Aastha's phone began ringing. She got up and recieved the call with all the excitement hoping it was Shlok. But she was disappointed to know it wasn't Shlok, it was Aakash. And Aakash made sure he was the first one to wish her. Shruti was the next one to wish Aastha. Then Avdhoot, Kalindi and Ajju came into her room to wish her and they took her down to the hall. And there she was surprised to see all the decoration! And she was more surprised to see Shruti and Aakash were there too!! They both had called her from her own house!! Shruti had herself made a cake for Aastha. They celebrated Aastha's birthday and enjoyed eating the cake. It was late when Aakash left. Shruti stayed back at Aastha's place. Aastha took the blessings of the elders. They all chatted for some time before going to sleep.

Before sleeping, Aastha just checked her phone to see whether there was any message or missed call from Shlok. But there wasn't. She just lay on the bed beside Shruti, lost in her own thoughts.

"Aastha? What happened? What are you thinking?" asked Shruti.

Aastha smiled at her saying, "Nothing yaar...! Let's sleep now, we need to get up early tomorrow!!" Shruti agreed and went to sleep. Aastha was feeling uneasy. "Did Shlok Sir forget my birthday? Or may be he didn't know..." thought Aastha, "Maybe he did not want to wake me up at 12... I am sure he will wish me in office!"

PRECAP : Aastha tells everyone that she wishes to invite Shlok for dinner at home tonight and everyone gladly agrees.
