Does BW have any directors who can sell films on their own?

Hollywood has many such directors like QT, Cameron, Fincher, Scorsese etc. Their films are highly anticipated irrespective of the cast. The likes of QT has a sizable fanbase.

I think the closest thing to a Director brand we had was SLB during HDDCS, Devdas and Black days, but I find him highly overrated anyway. And he lost that clout as well.

Raj Kumar Hirani maybe? Although India still doesn't have directors who are bigger than stars.

Rajkumar Hirani's name seems to create a lot of hype for P.K.

I guess Rohit Shetty is becoming somewhat of a brand aswell

Yea, Raju Hirani can be counted as one.

Though people may be divided about the quality of his films, what about Kjo? He was able to create a lot of hype for SOTY with three newcomers. People expect grandiose production value from his films.

I don't like 3 idiot because of Aamir khan.. The movie is a perfect movie.. Flaw less and I am pretty sure people will watch his movies lets say if he works with some newbies..

Unless a director can open a movie on his name alone and not depend on actors like a Spielberg or a Scorcese or a Tarantino or a Burton, they cannot. BW does not have anyone like that IMO.

KJo is one director who can give the actors a run for their money in terms of popularity since he is all over the place but I now doubt his production values. After SRK, he more or less is involved in the production of chick flicks and candy floss romance.

I agree.

I also think Anurag kashyap, dibakar banerjee are a brand in their own way, they cater not to the mainstream audience at large, but a niche audience which watches the film for them only.
