India in itself a rich country when it comes to dance forms or styles. When Era of dancing shows started here in India, I mean It kinda hold a grip over TRP audience and We Indians started liking dancing shows as much as singing shows, Dance shows never focused on Indian classical forms or folk. Did They? Usually a product seek innovation when it has already tried everything domestic, but I can't recall much occasions when we got tired of seeing Indian dance forms and started craving for overseas art. We were never that equipped to decide. Audience sees what they offer when it comes to dancing reality shows in India.
Very few had shown courage to attempt pure Indian classical. I can see the reason behind too much fusion over there as not everybody find Classical forms as enchanting. So mixing it with little bit of freestyle or using Bollywood number or taking creative liberty, we have seen it all. But now I can see even this fusion getting disappeared. We see hardly 1 performance from each participant in any reality show which is Indian classical or folk. And here they seem to discharge their responsibility.

Dance shows are about anything other than Indian dancing literature. I mean Aren't we missing on something very beautiful and refreshing? When we have mediums to witness our rich dancing literature, we are busy adoring international dance forms. A blend would be refreshing to watch plus enlightening too.
Classical dances are always seen as a thing of professionals in most of regions of India. We don't go out to see a Bharatnatyam or Kathak performance here in North. Nor I can see people adoring Bhangra or Ghoomer or so on anymore here. But we do get amused by seeing Salsa, Rumba or anything international. Are we bored of Indian dance forms?? I don't think so. We are not even aware of beauty of Indian dance forms. We haven't seen them yet. I haven't. Apart from tit bits and fusions shown over reality shows, I am a downright ignorant.

My point is that Indians aren't exposed to beautiful Indian dance forms yet, not properly. We might wanna see them with much care and attention getting performed on this big reality shows.
It's good to see people performing and getting trained in international dance forms. Somewhere I feel proud that our nation is learning beyond boundaries.
But at the same time, it's shame that we don't even know about our own dancing forms.
Entertainment, sensuality, edge, Meaning, emotions, expressions and so on! Our Indian dancing forms too are signification for the same. I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be given a chance on dancing reality shows?

I have followed two seasons of JDJ. Show has a large audience and why not showcase Indian dancing literature here where celebrities can promote them. Lovers of Indian dancing styles are not less but limited to specific demographic regions. I would love to see magic unfurled all over universe.
I don't see a valid reason behind this despair by makers of reality shows.

I suppose you've heard of the term 'Colonial hangover.'
Homi Bhabha had this great colonial mimicry theory to support this. As a subaltern country for a long period of time, we try to mimic the "superior race' in order to gain distinction.
This is precisely why every aspect of our culture is dying out. It's not just about the show, but general subaltern mentality towards their culture. Soon, our regional languages will die out as well, not only dance forms or other things. It's not about JDJ or DID or NB or whatever, it's about the deep-rooted problem with colonial mimicry.
I am a little serious today.

Honestly! i didn't know about the term!😆 but I got the connotation of it here. 😳
I agree with mimic part. We are trying to fit in and getting bad shaped here.
Everything regional is already dying. I can see Rapping butting in folk, fusion in every kinda art, and Language, we shall not worry about it as it's already ruined. Ask someone to speak a line in Pure Hindi without using English in it, And see the kind of difficulty they have. We wanna be someone and something we are not. In the route, we are killing our probiotic bits and justifying dragging microbes bits of culture. I see major Wisdom problem!

Regular dwts watcher first time JDJ , very true that appreciation of classical and folk in reality shows is like asking the channels to go bankrupt. There are so many beautiful festivals happening in India that showcase these styles if they truly want to conceptualiuze a dance based show but Bollywood and now the channels have never supported it. It would actually make a huge difference for them since those artists are actually strugglers, sometimes may be regionally b popular but the large channels don't touch it at all. In talent based shows too it is occasionally seen but they rarely will win so people keep doing fusion and leaning more and more western.
BTW dwts looks for tecniqual elements in established ballroom styles and JDJ is just entertainment factor and fusion from what I am seeing.

Same question I've had for years. I even brought this topic up last season.

Everyone has become so invested in western dance forms that Indian has been lost. :(

I just feel its much more difficult to learn an indian dance form in a matter of few days!!
Everytime i have seen anyone attempting an indian dance i have seen judges go like that we will give u marks for trying to attempt this!! Ur mudras were nt perfect and what nt! And then contestants dnt get good marks so it acts as a deterant for them to even try it again!!
