Agreed, this may be one thing but majority of these choreographers are not technically competent to teach classical styles since they themselves are not trained in these styles. Also knowledge of one style may not necessarily extend to another. Its mostly the knowlege and risk tolerance of the people who are pitching to decision makers and the interest of decision makers for these shows The format has to be rethought, trained dancers have to be encouraged , is the audience willing to accept?
People watch the same dance choreographed by say Birju maharaj performed by madhuri and say wow, do they know that he has probably 100 students around world who could perform the same items with more grace and elan true to the form but who knows them ? If all the great gurus or their star disciples are not roped in the quality will always be an issue. If someone is willing to learn and the format allows some prior training, it could be added but the trainer had to know what the student can excel in the limited time they have to include it.

In any case what goes for classical in tv shows is also so below average its fine if they don't attempt it.

I feel atleast the show is back to the original DWS format, ballroom dancing
for past 3 season, in the name of themes and gimmicks, all we saw were bw, mishmashs peddled as contemporary and contestants sticking to comfort zones in general.

As the show format is based on ballroom there is no harm to use the pure ballroom dance forms, like they were done in season1. Atleast that would be better than the thumka, jhumka and theme overdose of past 3 seasons.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On topic, I think such shows are based on what the audience want , reflected by TRPs, and voting

I
the song selections are so weird for Indian classical dance forms, sometimes I cringe and wish they were not showing indian dances at all

even then Indian dances, those attempting Indian dance forms, classicals or otherwise really don't get vote.

So the answer lies right in front of your eyes.

Audience gets what they demand.

There are so many beautiful festivals happening in India that showcase these styles if they truly want to conceptualiuze a dance based show but Bollywood and now the channels have never supported it. It would actually make a huge difference for them since those artists are actually strugglers, sometimes may be regionally b popular but the large channels don't touch it at all. In talent based shows too it is occasionally seen but they rarely will win so people keep doing fusion and leaning more and more western.

BTW dwts looks for tecniqual elements in established ballroom styles and JDJ is just entertainment factor and fusion from what I am seeing.

I agree to an extent!
A classically trained dancer in talent hunt competition won't win as they are seen as non versatile. I have never seen DWTS. Going through the comments, I have got to know that it's specifically about ballroom dancing. If JDJ is adapting the format, I want proper judgement then.
And about my point about Indian dancing forms, I guess It's not JDJ where we are supposed to see them at least. format doesn't say so I guess!

Everyone has become so invested in western dance forms that Indian has been lost. :(

😔
I feel the same for Indian dancing styles.

That I agree. It takes year to master Indian classical forms but that applies on western forms too. We don't know much about western styles so it's hard to point out flaws as audience and judges are simply failure here in JDJ.
Rigidity is so there when it comes to anything ethnic in India so yeah! Choreographers do hesitate in trying some forms specially those which are connected with something holy. I see it as valid reason here.

Yup! Whatever Indian they do, it's just not enough and importantly pure. They mix it with western, use BW numbers, raunchy expressions, in short, murder of art.

then you should watch tamil dance reality shows, they only take few western dance style, rest of the rounds will be focus on indian dance styles, like old movies classic dance style, folk etc.

Very well said!
I do agree on bit that Indian forms need to done with proper care and detailing. Only trained teachers can teach that. And that is something downright risky for channels to try. But It would be worth watching a show where trained dancers come and showcase Indian dance forms. With the given set of choreographers, quality will suffer.

I am totally ignorant about DWTS format, If JDJ is following it or not, I guess people who have watched both can tell. 😳
But JDJ must have adapted according to demography. There's no harm in following the authentic format but little bit promotion of Indian forms won't do harm. Of course keeping it aligned with format of show.
I know!!
It's even more sad to see Indian forms badly choreographed on some stupid songs.
Talking about taste of audiences, They have grown this fond over western dance forms. Credits to Indian dance shows for presenting them. All I wanna say is Indian dances haven't given a fair chance yet. IMO!
