actually the quote is attributed to Gandhi by his biographer , its not documented anywhere that gandhi really said those exact words.

I recently met a grown American woman who didn't know who Gandhi was. To say I was shocked would be the biggest understatement.

However, this quote is pretty well-known. I think it was even mentioned in the Munna Bhai series.

If I'm not wrong she did IB from Singapore. That can be a reason why she isn't aware of this quote.
