Well this is what I thought and what you are saying also kind of indicates the same.

I also thought this is what it meant ... husband and wife by mutual consent, not by religious or 'dharmic' rituals.

I don't think so. This is a part of marriage,it can't be called adharm...I mean even dharampatnis do that so how can that be called adharm 😛 I think he meant that Paro is not his wife by dharam i.e by rituals-pheras,mangalsutra n all.
