Hi Everyone,

The majority of the population of the world is at least nominally committed to some religion or another. And despite the perception in some parts of the Western world that religious belief is in terminal decline, or that economic and social development go hand in hand with secularisation, there are many parts of the world where fundamentalist religious belief is firmly entrenched (including arguably the most 'developed' nation on earth, the USA).

Religious belief, it seems, refuses to go away. Some people might think that religion is not an appropriate topic for debate – perhaps because it is too personal, too sacred, or outside the realms of rational debate. For the rest of us, however, there is a fascinating and lively debate to be had. There are many different dimensions to debates about religion.

To start with there is the philosophical question of how plausible belief in God is. Then there are social, moral, and political questions about the effects of religious belief on individuals and communities both in the present and historically.

1.Has religious belief, on balance, been a force for good or for harm in the world?

2.Are religious beliefs rational or irrational???

Cheers,
Raksha 😊
More of a bad force I'd say, specially as more and more religions developed, people got that much more divided. Even if there were no religions, I don't think it would have made any difference to the world, except maybe a few buildings would have been missing.
No faith; world seem to fall apart! People think differently; some like an idea, thought and make a religion out of it, others like a part of the idea, but want to add their interpretation to it, and make another religion ... division is there due to different thought processes not religions.... basic principles for all relgions are the same; people (mis)USE and (mis)interpretate the basics. Relgion ain't bad; infact it acts as positive guide force in many a life, determines people's behavior (morals, etc.). What people do with religion is what is bad.

I don't know if that makes sense; right now, it does to me.

I know religion helps in guiding people, but the fact is so many times that religious head also misguide people. As for morality or philosophy, most of the times they were not developed by religion, they were developed by societies or people's education and perception level, religion took it up from there. What religion does is enforce that sense of morality, and in that case it does not always work rationally but it expects people to accept it as a dogma. To be very fair, who do you think developed religion, did god come down one fine day and asked the earthlings to worship him, or was it started by one or a group of people who thought there must be an all powerful force behind all that happens, gave a name for that all powerful force and then passed it off as a religion. Nowadays we call this all powerful and destiny thing as fatalism.

I think religion is meant to be treated as a personal thing. Practising religious beliefs can make one a better individual- afterall all religions teach you how to be a better human being.

When religion forms the basis of polarisation of societies it is harmful

A free secular society where people are free to follow their own religion while showing tolerance towards the others' is the utopian situation that all world citizen should be striving to acheive!

Well said!!👏👏👏

I don't like discussing religion with all not for the fear of being misunderstood but we need to know the attitude of the people and their ideologies about God and religion and most of them don't have any basic knowledge about the procedures they follow!!

I have respect to my religion but I don't follow any rituals and I don't like suggestions in this aspect of performing rituals and if any one questions me "why I don't chant the Sahastra Namas or Why I don't don't perform puja and all",I'm forced to discuss about the religion right from Upanishads😛!!

Basically people who put a tag that they are religious ,don't have basic idea about the rituals they follow, they say they will learn on one fine day about the significance of those and meanwhile they follow blindly!!

I'm very inquisitive about different religions , their holy books and their festivals! Every religion is Scientific and the ultimate truth about the Almighty is beyond all the Sciences😊!!!

Cheers,

Mythili

For some reasos none of my IF forum codes or functions are working...So please have some patience with me till I figure out what it is... I tried using IE, even there its the same story...

I will just state what I wanted to about the topic..

Religion may have been the occasion for various social and political wrongs, but it is not THE cause. You can be quite sure that if you took away all the world's religions people would still identify themselves with national and political groups and go to war over territory, political conflict etc.

Equally elitism and bigotry are, sadly, parts of human nature with or without religion. In fact religious belief, when taken seriously and sincerely, is a force for good in the world, promoting humility, morality, wisdom, equality, and social justice.

Its been good and much required force to set purpose to life...

2.Are religious beliefs rational or irrational???

Religion is based on irrational beliefs.. cant be rational at any point... its just egotism of the masses...

Raksha 😊
