FF: ANKAHEE
Prologue
Madhu looked at herself in the mirror and probably for the first time in her life, she blushed. Okay maybe not for the first time ever, but Madhu was not the blushing kind in general. She was bold, tough, independent and not anything like those demure touch-me-nots of her college that giggled all day discussing clothes and boys. Madhu was smart, confident and bindaas. She never cared about dressing up and as for her boys, well there was only one boy in the world who made her heart stop and all her toughness turn to mush internally.
The boy...the man...her Rishabh who would be her fiance in only a few hours from now.
She was waiting by herself in the room - her family was all gathered outside in the hall and all her cousins and friends had bolted leaving her alone the moment they heard that Rishabh had arrived. Madhu knew she was flustered and nervous, but she pretended to ignore it. She walked around the room trying to mask her impatience - how long till they call her outside? how long till I can see him again? It wasn't fair that everyone could see how handsome her RK looked while she was the one waiting by herself. Her thoughts quickly raced to her memories of her RK...his looks...when suddenly she caught her own reflection in the mirror.
For a second she was stunned. She looked pretty. She really did. She had never imagined she could look like this. Her white and red lehenga, her simple but elegant jewelry - was this really the girl who couldn't bother what she wore as long as it was a T shirt and jeans. Until today, she never thought she could ever look pretty - sure Rishabh had said that he found her beautiful, but she didn't believe him. Bu today, she looked like someone else.
And then it struck her - it was the smile. She was glowing. She had never been so happy in her life. This wasn't the Madhu she had known all her life. This was RK's Madhu, and today she was delirious because their relationship had not only survived, it had blossomed and in only a few months would turn into marriage, with the full support of her family and friends.

RK was sitting on the chair, fidgeting. Not the kind to enjoy being the center of attention of a room full of people, half of whom he didn't know that much, he was getting impatient waiting for his Madhu to arrive. Their friends were gathered nearby. Over time a lot of RK's and Madhu's friends had become "their" friends, but there were a few who were much closer to one of them.
Like Maya.
She was standing a few feet away, savoring some snacks when their eyes met. "Come here" RK gestured. Maya nodded her head and walked up the stage.
"I am getting bored. Don't leave me alone."
"Oh...is that so? In that case, I am never leaving you alone." Maya smiled and sat next to RK on the stage. "So...nervous..?" she winked.
"No yar. Just getting bored. There are so many people here and I have to be polite to all uncles and auntys."
"He he. You can't escape that today. But I am here to entertain you, and ward off too many polite greeters." Maya said holding RK's hand.
"You're the best" RK said and laughed.

Madhu entered the hall, flanked by cousins and bhabhis and friends on her side. She didn't care, she just wanted to get in as soon as possible - she had already been waiting for two hours. She wanted to run, to be honest, but that would have been too scandalous. Still, she tried to move as fast as she could without appearing too keen. But her smile gave it away to everyone who saw - Madhu couldn't wait to be her Rishabh's.
"One pose ma'am." the photographer said, annoying Madhu. She didn't want to stop and pose for pictures. She was still at the entrance of the hall, more than a hundred feet away from the stage. But she grudgingly stopped so the photographer could do his job. Her eyes searched for the stage, trying to get a glance of her RK.
Eventually, she got a clear line of sight through the crowd. There he was, looking like a God in his red sherwani. And then her heart stopped. All his attention was on her and he was holding her hands.
Madhu's smile disappeared. She lowered her gaze again, fighting back a sudden tear. But the sight of Maya in her red saree on her seat sitting next to her RK, holding his hand and laughing with him, it stinged her.
Not today.

Introduction Note cum Disclaimer
Hello, and thank you for reading the story. I just wanted to make a quick note about this FF. At this point, I am not very sure how it will turn out or if I would be able to complete it because I only know a few elements and snapshots - but I don't know if and how they will go together. Nevertheless I feel compelled to write.
One thing I do know is that this story is not of perfect people, and not meant to be for perfect people. The characters here would be grey - they would make mistakes, they would over-react, under-react and they would deal with situations like most of us deal with life - imperfectly at times. This is not about saintly pretty Gods and Goddesses, and this is not about a life with MAJOR dramatic twists everyday like a soap opera. This is about...life. And so, I totally understand that some of you may not like it, or find it disappointing/frustrating at times. I would request your patience to know where I am coming from, but it's ok if you hate it and don't wanna read it. If most of you don't want to read, I would just stop writing here, that's totally cool.
Please do share your views/feedback.
Thanks,
TK
