Chapter 8
A few days later, RK took up a new job. It was a high-end consulting firm and thanks to a referral from Maya, who herself worked there, and an impressive resume, RK quickly got an interview, and soon, had a job much better than even Maya's role and definitely better than RK's previous company. He was delighted, and Madhu was really happy for him as well.
That night, they both went out for a wonderful dinner and finished off with a delectable dessert at Madhu's place. RK was to join his new job immediately, and soon got busy in the process of settling in to the new firm, especially as he had a much larger scope of responsibilties. It was challenging, but he was enjoying himself thoroughly and every day when they spoke on the phone in the evening, Madhu could make out that RK was much happier than he had been in his previous organization. The only downside was that there was much less opportunity for RK and Madhu to meet, because of the increased pressures and time demands of settling in a new role. Still, Madhu told herself it was only a temporary situation and was as supportive to him as ever. On her end, her new project was coming along really well as well and she was really happy about how both hers and RK's careers had shaped up. Privately though, she was missing RK a lot and wished that she could somehow spend more time with him, but she knew the circumstances and did not complain to RK. She knew was a selfish Rishabh-addict, but that was her problem!
A couple of months after starting his new job, RK was meeting Madhu for lunch at their book cafe. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, and it had been a while since they had a decent amount of free time to hang out with each other. They had met in the interim, but it had mostly been short coffee meets, or they had hung out in larger groups with their other friends on some weekends since RK had limited free time. Even though they had been speaking on the phone, RK knew Madhu had missed him and he himself wanted to spend some quality time with her. Finally, he felt well-settled in his new firm and with work pressure reducing, they were both looking forward to spending the day together.
Madhu looked really pretty in a pink low neck tunic, but she as usual rebuffed RK's compliment.
"What do you want to do after this?" RK asked while they were both eating lunch.
"Anything you want."
"Umm...I don't know. You want to go to the mall and shop?"
"If you need to buy something I will come with you, otherwise, shopping eeewww. I hate it." Madhu made a face and they both laughed.
"You're a weird girl honey. Normal girlfriends are so easy to please with shopping."
"So take your normal girlfriends and get bankrupt buying them clothes and jewellery and makeup and shoes and...God knows what all women buy."
"Okay, will take them only."
"Haww. How many girlfriends do you have?"
"Weird ones...only you. But lots of normal ones." RK winked.
"You're mean.If you ever cheat on me, I promise I will kill you." Madhu said and threw a tissue on RK.
"Ha ha. You're so cute when you're jealous. Ok, do you want to go to the park?"
"Only if you buy me an icecream."
"Done" RK smiled and Madhu grinned ear to ear. This felt so good. Being with RK made her feel so light, so happy, so...complete. She was delighted and all the moments she had spent away from him longing for him seemed forgotten
"So how're things at work? Is your project done yet?" RK asked Madhu as they strolled in the park, eating their respective icecreams. Even though they spoke on the phone almost everyday, RK had always hating long conversations on the phone, so it was always for only a few minutes, and mostly about RK and his work. Madhu was always eager to listen to him, and somehow did not bring up too many details of her life because she thought that was boring, unless asked directly by RK. So unless something major happened, as a rule their conversations focused for the most part around RK or their friends, and RK did not know as many details of Madhu's life.
"No! It's getting into the final phases. My boss told me yesterday he thought I was doing a great job, but I am worried because..."
"Oh boss reminds me, did I tell you that because my designation is higher than Maya's now, me and Rohan are now teasing her to call me Boss. It is so hilarious, you should see her face! She's so used to bossing around and getting her way with us. It was Rohan's idea when we met yesterday, but it's already been so much fun!"
"Sounds fun. You guys are ganging up on her, you're mean..."
"Well, she's mean to us all the time."
"That's not true. Ria tells me you and Rohan always team up to play pranks on either Maya or her."
Over the last few months, Ria and Madhu had become quite good friends. Since Ria had been dating Rohan for a while, she knew everyone in the gang quite well and kept telling Madhu stories of their ties together and all the pranks they played. Madhu being new to the group, felt a little left out in their internal jokes every time they all met up. Even though she had become good friends with Ria and Rohan over the past months, she hadn't spent as much time with Maya and overall she still wasn't close enough to feel part of the "gang".
"Ria and you have become good friends right?"
"Yeah, she's really sweet."
"That she is. She has been really good for Rohan."
"And what about me?" Madhu asked and RK gave her a questioning look."Am I good for you?"
"Naah..."RK smiled "You're the best honey!"
Madhu smiled back and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.
"Honey's getting naughty I see." They both laughed and the conversation moved on to some other people at RK's office, until they both found themselves at Madhu's place, fervently making out.
The next day, Madhu got a call from RK.
"Madhu, I am going to Mumbai."
"Oh when?"
"Tomorrow morning first flight. I have just been assigned a new project and the client is in Mumbai."
"Ok, best of luck. For how long?" Madhu asked.
"Well, I will keep flying back on weekends, at least alternate weekends. But the project is six months long. So I will be in Mumbai for the most part, at least Mon-Fri."
"Ohh.."
"Don't sound so sad."
"No I am not sad." Madhu covered up. "I am happy for you. Your first big project. Congratulations. I am sure you would do really well."
"Thank you Madhu. Your support means a lot."
"I am always there for you. What time is your flight?"
"6 am. I am just about to reach home. I will pack and go to sleep."
"Yeah, do that." Then she added after a pause. "I will miss you."
"I will miss you too darling. You take care of yourself ok. I will try to come as many weekends as I can and meet you."
"You too take care of yourself. You'd be all alone in Mumbai..."
"Oh not to worry! Maya is on the same team as me, so would be there too. And it would be a lot of fun, because I will be her actual boss from now!"
